About 10 years ago I started a vocabulary list for an Italian friend to demonstrate the importance in English of the sea and the effect of Britain's status as an island on the language. It quickly reached two 2-column pages in 10-point font, just off the top of my head. I was surprised by my own thesis! Even if English-speakers don't live in intimate contact with the sea day to day, our language sure does.
