LocalStorage and offloading processing to clients is based. I'm a moron and a s*** dev (or, more so nowadays, vibe coder) so disregard everything I say. But most users' devices have plenty of resources to spare and their own data/processes are tiny anyway. A truly decentralized system is often clunky, but relying on a centralized server for the basics than utilizing local resources has got to be the most efficient thing ever.
