I visited two underground sites yesterday, one an abandoned marble mine, the other a 1900 year old underground nymphaeum complex later adapted by Christians, with the paint still on the walls. In both places the ambient air temp dropped to less than 17c instantly upon descent, and I felt the future of my species, with mixed emotions. We will have to learn to dig again.
