I had a pretty unhappy childhood. I struggled to fit in with my peers or find a place I belonged in my small, rural, conservative home town. When I moved to DC my horizons broadened a lot but I was still missing that sense of possibility. I felt weird and lonely and like the world wasn't built for people like me. I was depressed. I never graduated high school.
Going to Hampshire College felt almost like a fairytale. Like the reverse of the life I lived before. Suddenly I was surrounded by weird people. Suddenly I was part of a community that said, "We don't want to tell you how to be. We want to support you as you figure out how to be."
