I used to be reading along about some Italian artist of the early 20th century and learn that they were completely smitten with fascism for maybe 20 years of their career. And I would think, how odd for such precocious talent! I wonder what could have possibly deceived them about such obvious evil?

Living through it now again I think we can see that the adherence is not fully linear or intellectual. It's not even necessarily subscription through attraction. It's the default of a whole culture.
