It's not only the pure egoism and selfishness. It's the lack of thinking of consequences. That's why developed countries are developed and potentially still can be very egoistic. Every egoist has at least an idea of the consequences of his actions and wouldn't expect the same amount of candies next year. On a bigger scale that's the degradation (instead of improving) of a country with a society showing this kind of behaviour.
