Recently, we watched Frequency (2000), a time-travel thriller from back when Yahoo! was still a thing and its stock actually had value. Watching it itself felt a little like time travel.
I usually hate time-travel films. As soon as time travel enters the story, I start looking for reasons it can’t work. If it were possible, wouldn’t someone from the future have visited us by now? And then there’s the butterfly effect and, more particularly, the grandfather paradox, which makes it IMPOSSIBLE!
Still, I had a great time with this one. The story unfolds masterfully, then pulls you in before you notice how invested you are. The writing is clever, the acting is excellent, and the suspense really pulls you in.
Spoiler: I especially liked that when the past changes, the character’s memories of the present change too. I don’t see that handled often and it felt like a smart choice. The movie also gets that changing shit in the past should affect the present. What I can’t figure out, though, is why the baseball results they predict stay the same, no matter what else changes!
The cast is full of talented actors and the crime story works even if time travel usually isn’t your thing. It’s central to the movie, sure, but it isn’t the only reason to watch.

So, if you go to download another video you can’t because the button stays stuck thinking it’s still the same viewer as the last video unless you force close the app.

This is essentially the conclusion I came to a long time ago. The anarchocapitalist utopia so many early bitcoiners espoused is basically unachievable in an adversarial world.
Dismantling a modern state creates a vacuum of power that will be instantly filled by surrounding powers, and the experiment in non-governance immediately dissolves.
The same game theory applies to the fiat arms race. Unilaterally disarming your credit printer immediately allows a money-printing adversary to outspend and overwhelm you.
It is naive to imagine a scenario where every global actor suddenly decides to cooperate to advance a largely unpopular socioeconomic philosophy that has never succeeded at scale.
