It all started when my mum asked me to install a virtual dice app for her. There are tons of these apps in app stores but they either have crappy UX or tons of ads - the payed ones I didn't even consider. So after some time searching, I naturally vibe coded my own, which IMHO is now one nicest dice apps out there.

EU Member States have approved a GDPR change that prioritizes AI companies' profits over Europeans' data protection rights. The approved text allows Big Tech to use personal data collected over decades with minimal restrictions, as long as it's for AI. Max Schrems calls this a 'digital expropriation' of Europeans. The change benefits large corporations with vast data access, potentially leading to a sell-off of European data to global entities. It also grants a blanket approval for AI systems, regardless of their purpose. Further, the definition of 'personal data' is narrowed, complicating enforcement. The European Parliament and Commission will now negotiate the final law. If passed, it may face legal challenges for violating fundamental rights. #AI #DataProtection #EU #BigTech

On the morning of 26 December 2004, tourists on Hat Rai Lay (Railay) Beach near Krabi, Thailand, saw something they had never seen before.
The sea was pulling away from the shore. Within minutes, stretches of seabed lay exposed, with shells and stranded fish on wet sand where people had been swimming moments earlier.
Curious, some walked further out to look. Others stood and stared at the horizon. A news photographer from AFP captured the scene: holidaymakers in swimwear, calm and puzzled, watching a white wall of water rise in the distance. It was the first of six tsunami waves heading for that beach.
About an hour and a half earlier, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake had ruptured the seafloor off Sumatra, Indonesia. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded. It pushed a colossal volume of water across the Indian Ocean, and the waves reached Indonesia within minutes, then Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives and even the coast of East Africa hours later.
The receding sea was nature's final warning. When a tsunami's trough arrives first, the water draws back, sometimes hundreds of metres. In 2004 most people on those beaches had never been taught what that meant, so it became a curiosity instead of an alarm.
The cost was staggering. Around 228,000 people died or went missing across more than a dozen countries, making it the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. Thailand alone lost over 8,000 lives, including thousands of foreign tourists. About 1.7 million people lost their homes.
There was no tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean at the time. The disaster changed that. Today a regional warning network monitors the ocean, and coastal communities run drills, put up evacuation signs and teach one simple rule: if the sea suddenly retreats, run to high ground immediately. Don't look, and don't wait.

Clients should probably have a bitcoin/crypto switch in settings. Default should be off.
I think zaps are awesome. I would switch it on... but I also don't think its what sets Nostr apart. If anything, advertising it as a main feature is probably a turnoff for most normal people.

@npub1der…xzpc I am not against UX work. Just to clarify, because maybe other people are misunderstanding me based on few random sarcastic comments:
I dislike what some people commonly refer to as "UX", which is just pure status quo bias and survivorship bias.
They think that because X or TikTok or whatever works in one way and are successful currently that is the "best UX" today and that has to be copied, because that's what people want and that's the definition of easy. They probably do it unconsciously.
In fact what happens is that these platforms are successful for many other reasons and they happen to have some type of UX (survivorship bias). They have often very bad UX in many aspects, but everybody is already so used to these they don't count those as negative anymore (status quo bias), which is expected, but the professional UX designer should be able to see through this. Also because their own designers suffer from the same biases they end up copying each other and they become all similar.
There is also the issue of regulatory constraints and technological constraints they have, which Nostr apps don't, so that should be a good thing and a sign that we have to experiment with other UXes that could be much better.
Of course, Nostr also has other constraints, which are basically that the user has to be aware of keys and relays in some way or another, but because people are so deep into their status quo bias they refuse to see this as an interesting challenge and an opportunity for general enlightement, they prefer to try to hide it from themselves and from others, which benefits no one as such things are necessary and will necessarily have to reappear eventually if anything will work at all, so it's much better to face them as soon as possible.

Announcing Dipity!
TL;DR, it's a bluetooth mesh chat app built for local communities, not protests. You can get it on zapstore, google play, and soon the apple store (Lord willing).
Last summer, I was sitting at a coffee shop chatting with a friend about creating a bluetooth mesh app, inspired by Manyverse (a scuttlebutt app). The local-first architecture is what originally got me interested in this whole space, and yet I'd never tried building on it.
Less than a week later, Bitchat came out, which took the wind out of my sails.
Since then, Bitchat has seen meteoric growth, topping app store charts and making international headlines. Which is great! But I also have a few problems with it.
First, its primary metaphor is chat, which might be useful for some cases (like protests), but is near worthless for slower-paced async communication — think concert announcements, garage sales, lost and found, etc.
Second, it's vanilla nostr — messages are signed, and geohash rooms are accessible from anywhere. There are no real barriers to communication across space.
James Carey (no, not that one) talks in his book "Communication as Culture" about time-binding vs space-binding media. Time-binding media create continuity over time, while space-binding media create continuity over space. The trade-off of each is discontinuity over the other axis. We see this is the rise of "horizontal" identities (race, class, gender) over "vertical" identities (nationality, regionalism, home town pride) in tandem with the rise of space-binding media like the internet.
I want to see if I can fight the inherent tendencies of digital media to accelerate communication and erode local identities by using it in a new way.
Dipity is anti-efficient; it uses bluetooth and nostr with a new signature scheme to promote verifiability across only two hops. (In theory, this could be short circuited by placing a relay in between, or by passing along proofs, but assuming buy-in from users, the network can suppress illicit gossip.)
The goal of this is to create a local-only, human-scale gossip network that supports the formation of organic, rooted communities.
I don't know if this project will work, but I think it's interesting and worth a try.
Until the iOS version is out, I don't recommend trying to onboard your local community, since network effect is key (unless your locale uses Android exclusively). But please give it a try and let me know what you think!

Hey, #Manent 3.0 is out.
You asked for it, and now it's ready: voice notes!
https://chronicle.dtonon.com/5744bf3ee78272709f134a7e583d4fdcffd408b10da95ba8d0f49167b47e38ee.mp4
You can record voice notes with a tap and get them transcribed with a local, privacy-conscious model. You can also transcribe audio shared to the app, such as voice messages from your favorite DM app.
Then you can easily listen to the recordings and change the playback speed.
Manent is available for Linux, maxOS, Windows and Android. IOS soon, I hope.
Android users can install Manent from @npub10r8…t2p8, for other platforms download it from https://github.com/dtonon/manent/releases
