Any time I make a post that "does numbers", I get nervous. The Fedi is unfortunately full of "reply guy" types who totally break my peace and quiet.

Watching a video today on AI brain rot really helped cement for me what it is...a steady drop in practiced skills we take for granted. If you don't occasionally write emails, you get worse at it. if you don't do deep reading for yourself, you get worse at it. If you don't keep drawing or coding or composing, you get worse at them. Then the day comes when you need the skill, or something related to the skill, but you're too rusty to be effective. And critical thinking? Oh, that's a skill.

Oofta. No lies detected. And then there's the execution time differences if everything is in the zero page or not.

I've been pretty fond of Ibiza Global Radio lately. One of my partners leaves BBC Radio 3 Dance on all day too. And while it's podcasts and not radio, the Resident Advisor podcast has tons of more experimental DJs on it.

I *can* see the link isn't verified, and to boot, that bot pinged me like 15 minutes after I read your warning. Thanks for already reporting it, I'd just wanted you to have the reference on case you didn't already.

Timely. I just got pinged by a bot with a like to the site in its profile.

Did you know that #Owncast is coming up on its 5th anniversary? It's true! And I'm working on a fun and celebratory retrospective for the Owncast Newsletter. If you've got thoughts, recollections, thank-yous, or anything else "good vibes" you'd like to contribute, no matter how small, please send me a message and we'll get you included in the next edition of the newsletter.
(Please boost this post so it'll get the word out)

I'm currently trying to put together another #Owncast newsletter and I'm looking for a streamer, project, or event to put in the "featured" column. Please reach out to me if you know someone doing something cool and would like to see them get some recognition.
Also, if you have upcoming events to advertise, let me know!
Please boost for visibility.

I'm just glad to have found your work. I've got a hardcover copy of volume 1 on the way, and I'm sure it'll get circulated around my roller derby league when I'm done with it.

When you go to the details page of a channel there should be an "add favorites" option there

I'm very happy to announce the v1.1 update of the #Owncast #Roku client. This new release supports curating your own personal list of favorite streams as well as badging to show which are live. Huge thanks to @npub17mn…wvxw for pushing us over that final yard to get it published!

Owning and controlling access to rivers and other bodies of fresh water was a pretty common right claimed by Tudor era monasteries. So... everything old is new again?

I feel you. There's something really magical about those hours when most people are sleeping. I do my best to enjoy some of them every night after my partners go to bed.

When I was younger, I used to love listening to Coast To Coast AM, a late night talk show about fringe and paranormal subjects. I have basically always been a skeptic and very scientifically minded, but I enjoyed hearing people talk about fringe ideas from a folkloric perspective. And because of that detachment, I didn't see the danger.
Fringe media sells the "You can't trust institutions; trust me." angle. And it leads to people accepting that parasocial relationship everywhere.

I'm tucking in to writing the next #Owncast newsletter this week. If you've got some sort of show/event/whatever related to Owncast that'll happen between mid-November and mid-December and want more visibility, please either shoot me a message or reply in thread.
Boost for visibility, friends.

The mid 90s were...a thing. The web was too new for people to know how it'd be embraced anyway and we didn't have a lot of the features needed for the kind of advertising we see today. But what we *did* have was Microsoft trying to abuse their PC OS monopoly power to try and push people into making sites that worked only with Internet Explorer...and IE couldn't be removed from Windows 95.

you know, that "unoriginal subordination" remark is kinda pointlessly going too far. I've seen many highly talented and creative engineers promoted into leadership and fail because *leadership is a distinct set of skills*.

Lucky for these two we live on nearly 2 acres at the end of an almost invisible one-lane road. So as long as they stay on our property, which offers plenty of patrol space, they're safe. We're trying to integrate them more into the home, but they'll likely be indoor-outdoor forever because we don't want to rob them of what they already know.

2024-09-05 15:32:55 UTC

My family is in the process of "adopting" some semi-feral kittens as indoor-outdoor cats in our family. One of them likes to climb a tree and get on the first story roof. Both are very curious about our life inside the house. And so my partner, while taking a shower, looked to his side to see this in the shower's vent window... #CatsOfMastodon

This reminds me of a mandatory diversity training I had once. This was in San Francisco and I think the trainers had never left the Bay Area. They were trying to do a hypothetical involving someone using outdated sexist language and added that the hypothetical person was from Tennessee. Our brightest, quietest, and kindest engineer repeatedly asked the trainers why. They said "You know, because he's Southern and backward." The engineer was from Alabama. We couldn't believe it.
