The most annoying kind of headline: " #EU membership cost Finland X euros per resident in 2025". (Text proceeds to explain that the so-called "net contributions" have nothing to do with benefits and costs.)
The EC should kill such figures, instead report the profits from shared functions.
As a starting point, estimate the public sector wages saved by not doing the EU agencies' work 27 times over. The UK learnt it the hard way, hiring 100k extra civil servants.

As some private #BitTorrent trackers are still down due to the recent #PHP release (PHP is used by #Gazelle and progeny), this should be a useful natural experiment for researchers on the empirical effects of #copyright and piracy.
How to compile a reliable dataset of the periods when trackers were down? A maintenance notice may be served as HTTP 200 behind Cloudflare. Presumably r/trackers informs about the biggest. There is probably a delay in the effects as people go through their caches.

I am reading @nprofile…jd82's "Exploring the Internet" (1992) and it's such a joy. Every chapter has a few gems.
I had no idea that already in 1991 @nprofile…m8u8's #WAIS was able to retrieve documents in response to queries in natural language. I remember librarians discussing how to add such functionality to their OPACs well into the 2010s.

"$10 million buys over 100 million emails, 30 million recorded phone calls"
https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/08/18/google-buys-crashed-airline-spirits-data-at-auction-because-ai/5288962
Convenient. The European Commission can use this data point to estimate an euro amount value for the cross-subsidy that #Microsoft and #Google gave to their own products by training LLMs over customer data. Ought to be useful for the inevitable fine under the #DigitalMarketsAct, which at this rate should run into the tens of billions of euros per year.

We could come up with ways to transclude non- #Wikimedia content and make it searchable, but one big problem is how to propagate corrections back to the source. A small portion of nonfree files can get the entire collection removed.
Rijksmuseum and the Smithsonian could afford to develop their own #MediaWiki extensions.

@nprofile…8atu @nprofile…y7s4 I would probably start the essay from the times before ~2008 when it was common to debate whether it's ok to have fun among wikipedians on Wikipedia/on IRC.
There's some trace of the debate in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Silly_Things for example.
"Hilariously", we had an overcorrection towards "Wikipedia is not social media" / "a forum" when people became *less* likely to use it that way, because there were other more addictive places. Mostly for elitism really, "we're serious business".

@nprofile…xdn2 Verissimo. E poi??

Major search engines are so broken these days, that LLMs are better at producing deterministic results. I was looking for a document containing three strings, and got zero results. The "AI" chat immediately found it. This is not due to some language analysis feature (it was an exact match on English words, no declensions or anything needed).
Today again I was looking for a news article matching some keywords and got no results. #SearxNG found it just fine.

@nprofile…h0ux Fair enough. BTW the same can be said about email these days: to create a gmail account you probably need a SIM which in many countries requires valid ID.
So we exclude even the lowest possible threshold of official/monetary authentication. Now we're left only with person-to-person trust. It's ok, but it requires a lot of work from some volunteers, so that's another form of inequality that emerges.

@nprofile…h0ux I share the ideal goal and I want to understand better. Say an event is organised by an EU-based association for its own members which requires a payment of 0.01 € to an euro-denominated bank account for membership, is that still bad? (I'm implying it would be a regional event with no aspiration to cover all geographies. After all, even if it's online, timezones would be a restraint anyway.)

Part of the reason I find generative "AI" peddlers so tiresome, I suspect, is that they regurgitate so much of the playbook of the worst Hegelian/Marxist cliché.
"Follow me, for I represent the FUTURE! How do I know the future, or why do I think the future is better than the present, you ask? Shut up, traitor!"
Do we really have to have this debate all over again?

Open-access #CommunityFridges in Berlin were a social innovation to improve inclusion: they don't require personal connections nor the use of an online service, so they reduce gatekeeping in #FoodSharing (Oona Morrow 2019).
In the USA, some cases reproduced the power imbalances of traditional #FoodAid and displayed white saviorism (Anna Arons 2022).
In Chicago they partnered with Black and Brown people-run orgs (Saria Lofton 2021).

@nprofile…v4kz BS activity in German seems to have significantly decreased already since the peak in mid November. It will be interesting to see where it goes.

@nprofile…v4kz Interesting that adding BS doesn't seem to have changed the trend at all. Is it just too small in German, or do people over there not click links?

@nprofile…6zct «Therefore where the EDPB considers that a requested opinion should really be turned into guidelines, they should ask the DPAs to withdraw the request»
Is that even possible? Art. 64 says «the competent supervisory authority *shall* communicate», «That opinion *shall* be adopted within eight weeks» (emphasis mine).

Decades spent talking about the semantic web, and billion-euro retailers still spend obscene amounts of effort writing scripts to scrape each other's websites to figure out what the going prices are. It's a silly arms race. Just force them to submit all their prices to some central CC-0 database with a public API: they'll end up liking it. (I don't even care if it's publicly run, it could be a trade association.)

Dear independent bookshop on #AbeBooks with millions of books carefully updated by price-setting scripts, I don't know how you figured out that 0,55 € is a price I'm willing to pay for the extra service of "buying directly from your website so I don't give a cent to Amazon", but yes, you're perfectly correct. Once again I placed my order.

#Google will build new DCs near Oulu, #Finland, and bought 1400 hectares of forest from the state. Both locations are near a 400 kV power transmission line, judging from openinframap.
https://yle.fi/a/74-20128014
The state should rent this land to Google, not sell it. The value of this land for Google is determined by the amount of public investment around it. Now every further public investment will be an untaxed gift to Google.
(Yes I'm an hypocrite. My apartment building owns its own land plot.)

@nprofile…5nrt Is the "quick start guide" helpful? https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Pywikibot/Third-party_Wiki_Quick_Start
There's a category.py so if you have a list of titles to work with it most of the work is done. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Pywikibot/category.py
If you don't have a list of titles and you prefer a GUI with checkboxes, perhaps ReplaceText can do the job. You just need to be careful with regular expressions as it can be quite disruptive! https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Replace_Text

Me, sitting on the street: we need massive economic and social reconstruction NOW, climate neutrality by 2030.
Also me, reading DW in my armchair: perhaps the demolition of the Berlin Wall was way too hasty. We should have spent more time in the sauna like Merkel, taken a few years to run a constitutional assembly and have a better thought-out reunification process with a proper constitution instead of rushing into this mess.

I've just concluded a three-year study on whether I'm able to induce prosocial behaviour in my neighbours, starting with shared management of my building's clothes lines, which previously saw little use. I've added clothes pegs for everyone to use. People started using them. In face of a shortage, would they add more on their own?
The answer is no.
I've written down my inventory (2 €) and doubled the supply myself (spare ones have been sitting in my drawer all along) so I don't run out.

I have one polo shirt with the buttons on the left side rather that on the right. Every single time I wear or fold it, my muscle memory fails me and I get confused. It feels like I have to reprogram my body to complete the task. I guess this is how a left-handed person feels all the time in a right-handed world?
