The upcoming Mastodon design looks really nice. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/10/5.0-a-closer-look/ From the first look, I think I can ditch elk.zone for it.

German politics are like a slow motion car crash. There were a couple people with good ideas how to not hit the wall, but also many others who suggested to speed up a lot more, while closing their eyes and now we are crashing and watching it happen. Some are celebrating that they only broke their ribs and not their skull so far, but we‘ve also not hit the wall with full force yet and many still push the gas pedal.

Recently, I had a very important conversation with a friend about our climate anxiety. At a certain point, when you already gained enough knowledge about the climate catastrophe, it does not make that much sense anymore to keep on adding anxiety on top, by reading more studies and bad news. It does not give you more control. The only valuable approach is to turn anxiety into action.

I've never been a Rush fan, but the Anika Nilles story pulled me deep into a Rush rabbit hole, and her whole success story with the band and the amazing reception from the fans are just such a wonderful source of joy.

There's an official drought monitor for Germany btw and it also really does not look great at all if you measure it. The one thing is seeing and feeling it, but there's actually data behind it too.

If this wasn't Mastodon, some smart-ass would probably tell me that there are also people living in Portugal, enjoying the nice weather for centuries or some other shit like this. Our vegetation is not made for this. It cannot adapt quickly enough. Go, look outside.

Climate diary: For a trip with my son, I drove from Heidelberg to north of Hamburg this weekend. 500+ km straight through Germany. I haven't seen anything like this. This country is bone-dry. Dry grass, dry shrubs, dry trees as far as the eye can see for hundreds of kilometers. It looks a lot like Portugal in summer. Honestly, the only thing I could feel is fear.

All trains in Germany are currently stopped because their communication system is down.
It's very much on brand. The Deutsche Bahn was never good at connecting trains.

The temperatures in our area are insane this year. I mean, we had a couple of heatwaves in the past years, but this one is just brutal. When it does not really cool down below 24 degrees at night, you wake up completely destroyed just to prepare for another round of 39 degrees. Production levels plummet. The air feels like a wall. But hey, it's summer. I'm being told I should enjoy it. I just really don't.

Climate deniers celebrate that the IPCC worst case scenario has been declared unlikely and scream out loud that the apocalypse has been cancelled and that "climate change religion" has finally been exposed as fake.
Yay, current climate action will likely save us from 4-6 degrees of warming 🎉
That's only reason to truly celebrate if one never really understood what 2+ degrees of warming will look like.
The stupidity pandemic is in full swing.

Prediction for 2026: There will still be more than enough people and organizations that will not jump on the fascism bandwagon and more than enough people who urgently need allies against it. There will be even more silence. Because of fear, because of despair. And it will be even more important to keep breaking that silence, to show and to understand that we are not alone. When times are getting darker, we need to bring brighter torches.

It might sound weird, but we don't have any plans to bake AI into @nprofile…9kqk We are well aware that a significant part of our customers would not appreciate forcing AI upon them. And we respect that. Kirby is a highly extensible system. We are already seeing great integrations. But it's all about having a choice and it's also about sticking to our philosophy. You should be able to add things to Kirby. You should not have to remove them in order to make it work for you or your values.

Notion is such a good example of a tool with a team that did not know when to stop and reflect, but just kept adding.
We had a brilliant drawing teacher and sculptor in university. I was very pleased with one of my drawings and kept going, adding more and more details. He suddenly stood behind me and shouted: "Stop! You are riding a dead horse here!" I had killed what was already good by not stopping. That lesson really stuck with me.

The majority of the tech industry has no valid vision how to contribute to a liveable future for humanity on this planet. Their dystopian fantasies don’t match with human needs. That’s why we will keep sliding from one bubble to the next. Everything has to be artificially inflated to hide the massive abyss of meaninglessness behind it all.

God, I'm so disgusted by this country sometimes. There's already an open political discussion about sending refugees back to Syria. WTF.
I had a long conversation with a mother from Ukraine after German politicans discussed sending people back to Ukraine earlier this year. Her child is in my son's class. You have to be an absolute monster to not see what those discussions do to people who try to build a new life here after the entire family has been brutally traumatized.

Listened to the Olaf Scholz interview by @nprofile…grwd yesterday and it has some really interesting parts, good questions and for him some astonishingly direct answers. But my key take-away: He really does not understand the emergency behind climate change at all. Not even a tiny bit. It's not about a different political focus. His answers just show that he doesn't personally get it.

Most important: this does not invalidate the Fediverse. There’s no such thing as winning and I feel bad for my own past thoughts. The only thing that matters is that we finally get away from algo based social media that collectively fries our brains. Bluesky feels pretty healthy right now despite the questionable background. Be happy that lots of people find a healthier place in really dark times.

2024-11-19 08:29:22 UTC

Maybe I’ve turned too soft and pragmatic, but I think that millions of people finally leave Twitter and don’t end up on Threads is a good thing. I wanted the Fediverse “to win” for a long time. I think the crypto VC money behind Bluesky is a huge red flag and will very like backfire. But I also think that it’s not in my control what people prefer and there are valid reasons why they prefer Bluesky, no matter if we like it or not.

For the last two days, a helicopter is flying around, throwing lime on the forest to improve the soil. I don't know, maybe this is totally normal in modern forestry and I simply have no clue, but it feels like some pretty dystopian shit that this is needed.

This is remarkable. The local energy provider in Mannheim – my former home town as a student – is giving their customers a clear roadmap for the future:
- district heating will be fully renewable by 2030
- gas network is being deprecated by 2035
- heatpumps are the No.1 replacement
- gas is going to get expensive because of CO2 prices and shrinking demand for the network
- biogas and hydrogene are no alternative to heat private homes

My favorite part about @npub1r85…cmlh this year is hard to describe. It was more of a feeling than a topic. The feeling that the community is reflecting together in a really sensible way. But also finding strength and joy together, while being very open about how fucked up the news are.

I grew up a few km away from the border to France. My classroom was 100 meters away from the Rhine. I was in 9th grade when they opened the borders. I was in 12th grade when they introduced the Euro. Visiting other countries in the EU suddenly felt truly magical. "Fuck you" to all politicians in this country who are currently destroying this magical idea for pure populism, to appease some fascists. It's all about staying in power - as if that helped - and I couldn't despise them more for it.

After the first full 12 months of operation and years of research, the Ocean Cleanup has been able to put a price tag on cleaning up the great pacific garbage patch. They estimate that it could take just 5 years and 4 billion USD to clean it up. This project keeps on being a massive inspiration and a source of hope. That estimated budget is ridiculously cheap. Today, I saw a post from a couple who got their first EV. They realized that they never need to stop at a gas station again - except maybe for air or a Snickers. I never thought about it that way. With every new EV the customer base of gas stations is shrinking. It’s so obvious. But also such an invisible and yet radical measure of immediate change.

@npub1xed…yg9w In my experience, 95% of all VC funded competitors in our areas will vanish when you are playing the long-term game and just wait long enough. The other 5% will become so expensive that they end up as enterprise systems for a very exclusive audience.

This place is flawed in many ways, because human beings are flawed. The beauty of this place is that we are all shaping it together. All the discussions about social issues, defederation, UX issues, missing alt texts - even shitposts about Twitter and Bluesky - they are part of building and defining this together. There’s no company that makes the decisions. The discussions might be hard and annoying and not everyone wants to get involved, but we still earn 100% of the rewards together.
