Based on its current trajectory, I expect Overcast to have more iPhone Duo users than iPhone Air users within a week… two, tops.

I opened up Apple Maps' search box and its new ads suggested I go to JetBlue Airways, the JetBlue terminal at JFK airport 39 miles away.
I opened up Google Maps' search box, and 100% of the screen space is devoted to my presets (Home/Work/etc.) and my Recent searches.
Apple continues to embarrass itself with its shitty ad plays.
In the meantime, I'll keep using Google Maps, because it's just *better*, and — something I never thought I'd say — it respects me more as the user, with fewer ads. 🤯

12 days waiting for review. Still waiting.
App Store preorder date was set for today. Can't edit it while waiting for review. What happens when you blow past a preorder date waiting for Apple? Nothing.
My marketing plan is blown, and I can't plan anything else, because I have no clue if I can release this app today, or next week, or next month, or never.
Thanks a lot, Apple.
I guess it's time for this. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Rotating a photo in 90-degree increments has GOT to be one of the most common actions people take with their iPhone photos…
And yet:
- Photos on the phone: Multiple taps, buried in an edit mode, and the whole photo has to slowly “load” first
- Photos on the Mac: Command-R on the grid is VERY slow to execute, gives no feedback, and often drops repeated Cmd-Rs instead of queuing them
Does everyone at Apple just get photo orientation right on the first try, every time? Why is this so bad?

Part of the challenge with managing energy and motivation in programming is that sometimes, you can be on a roll getting things done, and suddenly your tools or environment just break spectacularly and derail you.
Like if you’re a carpenter, in the middle of building a table, and all of a sudden the hammer disappears from your hand and someone’s like “There’s no table, what are you talking about” and it’s still RIGHT THERE and what the heck happened to the hammer?!
That was my last 2 hours. 🤣

I fail using this UI at least once a week.
It's the AirPods Control Center volume pane, where I go to put my AirPods Pro into Adaptive mode (which I have configured a hundred times to be part of the long-press selection, but that always gets inexplicably forgotten).
What you're SUPPOSED to do is tap the circle to bring up the modes.
But right below it is the OBVIOUS LOOK OF A DROPDOWN CONTROL, complete with the double-arrow and tint color, but it is NOT ACTUALLY A TAPPABLE CONTROL AARRGGHHH 😡

These images from the Creator Studio announcement perfectly illustrate the failure of Liquid Glass.
It doesn't get out of the way of your content — it INVADES your content.
This is an image editor! Yet HUGE regions of the image are invaded, blurred, and obscured by translucent UI, making both the image and the UI worse.
Low-contrast UI on blurry content doesn't clarify anything or get out of your way — it distorts the content AND the UI into an ugly, unusable slurry.

@nprofile…9ap7 That's probably Overcast. Those are recent build numbers (1140–1147) and my Watch app binary is called "Watch" inside the Overcast bundle.
I do set a custom User-Agent, though, so I wonder how that's getting through without one.
The more recent builds from 1142+ fixed some issues that could cause excessive downloading in certain circumstances.

@nprofile…9ap7 An update I published recently seemed to have this runaway-download behavior in certain cases, especially when running the iPad app on macOS, which seemed to handle background downloads poorly.
In the following update, I worked around that problem by not doing background downloads when running on a Mac, and by imposing total-bytes/total-retries limits on every download on all platforms so they wouldn't retry repeatedly forever.

2025-11-17 13:28:09 UTC

Stumped by this one. Setting up an iPad with iCloud restore, and none of the apps are downloading automatically. Tapping one brings this up.
I'm on my Wi-Fi network, other connectivity works… and while this iPad does have cellular, no plan has ever been activated on it yet.
Reboots and Reset Network Settings haven't fixed it. iPadOS 26.1. Tapping "Download" immediately downloads the item over Wi-Fi.
Anyone ever see this? Any ideas?

Apple is not good at negotiating, and never has been.
They're good at dictating, which only works when they have all of the power.
When they actually need to *negotiate*, it's like when I suddenly needed to study in college: they have no idea how, they think they know everything and reject the possibility that they may not, they're not willing to do anything they don't feel like doing, and so they usually fail.

Or maybe not, since we may use different prompting and input than Apple, and they don't want us diluting their brand.

A hallmark of iOS 26 design seems to be the consolidation of what was previously multiple toolbar buttons into a "…" button that shows a menu.
Which looks fine, I guess, but some VERY common actions are now an additional tap away!
Safari is the worst offender. Want to switch tabs or close the current tab? The all-tabs view, previously the two-squares toolbar icon, is now buried in a menu, adding an extra tap and significant finger movement to possibly the most common action in Safari:

I agree. I do think the most egregious problems will be worked out before 26 ships, but *most* of this design will ship, and it'll be toned back over the next few years.

Steve Jobs would've LOVED this look. (It's not far from certain aspects of Aqua!)
But he also provided a stronger editing role to his designers in the name of usability. (not a perfect one, but a stronger one!)
I don't know who, if anyone, has that role over Dye's team today.
Most consumer-tech companies have a head of product, or a product-minded CEO. Not today's Apple. Seems like Joz is closest in role, but does he have the clout to override design? (I'd guess not.)

We've known for decades that translucency in UIs looks really cool, but is extremely difficult to design in a way that works with arbitrary content across versatile situations.
With the glass-redesign rumors, many of us thought, “If anyone can do it, it's Apple! They must've finally solved it."
They haven’t.
It still looks cool in some contexts, and utterly fails in others.

2025-06-10 16:55:43 UTC

I LOVE the switch away from centered text to leading-aligned text for dialogs and status screens.
It's much more legible for multi-line text. And even single-line text looks nice and fresh when the screen is designed to align with the leading edge.

Developers… recompile and run your apps on beta 1 when you're in a good mood, well-rested, and have some fresh coffee.
We're going to have a very busy summer.

I didn't expect anything remotely resembling an apology for any part of developer relations or Apple Intelligence.
I expected a cheerful demo of the new design, and a bunch of really cool new features, most of which were unrelated to what's going on in AI elsewhere.
And that's exactly what we got!

There is no winning with narcissists like Trump. All Tim Cook bought with his million bucks was a brief placation, and it cost his and Apple’s reputation dearly.
Another short-sighted, short-term move that failed to read the room, at the expense of long-term brand value. Forget “owning primary technologies” — THAT’s the real Cook Doctrine.
Cook chose poorly, again.

Built-in, on-device, unlimited-access AI models will very shortly be table stakes for software platforms.
This will enable countless amazing apps to be built by small developers, just as great UI, graphics, sound, and networking APIs have done to date.
Does Apple want their platforms to *cause* this wave, merely ride it half-assedly, or be overtaken by it?

The App Store's upcoming Accessibility Nutrition Labels are a great idea:
https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2025/05/apple-unveils-powerful-accessibility-features-coming-later-this-year/
But I worry that without verification, the features will be poorly understood and inconsistently implemented by developers claiming support.
I wrote back in 2014 that I wanted App Review to let us opt into accessibility testing, and show a badge for apps that pass:
https://marco.org/2014/07/10/app-review-should-test-accessibility
Could be a great way to improve outcomes for customers AND give developers more value for the 15/30%.

Not new (2023), but this exemplifies Apple’s culture of arrogance and entitlement.
By their logic, the local electric company “facilitates” a large portion of my Apple-device use. They should claim that they created the platform that lets Apple devices exist, and demand a third of their revenue.
What about my ISP? Cellular provider? Router manufacturer? The wires in my walls? The pizza place down the street, for fueling my body as I type?
Institutional delusion.

I don't think Apple *intends* to let abusive subscription scams stay in the App Store to make more money.
But this has been a problem for so many years, with no obvious progress being made to fix it, that their inaction speaks volumes, whether it's their intention or not.

2025-04-24 00:03:08 UTC

The App Store's alleged "protection" of its users from scammy apps has always had a huge blind spot when the scams are paying Apple their IAP cut, and therefore making Apple a lot of money.
Intentional? Maybe, maybe not.
But it sure happens a lot for it to be an honest mistake.
