@nprofile…uptt I'm also doing local model stuff. I'd recommend building and expanding your library of mcps to cover regular topics you manage. It's a great boon for sturdier outputs and it drastically cuts context usage.

Do you want your computer to sound like an 80s #scifi device with lots of bleeps and bloops and swoops? Are you running #linux?
https://github.com/jamestomasino/beep
This is my recreation of an old program from nullsoft called 'beep' that does just that. The more stuff your computer is doing (cpu, mem, network, etc) the more it beeps and boops. Enjoy!

Fully remote
BUT you need to actually live in the US or Canada (payroll and tax limitations)
We are a pharmaceutical marketing agency, if that matters to your decision making.
Most of the work is web-stack, though not always on the web.
Still interested?
Here's what I need:
Someone with really strong HTML, CSS, and JS skills (flexbox, grid)
I need someone who has a really good attention to detail. Fighting for pixel perfection.
Wordpress experience is a big plus (I hate it, but more client work is coming in with it)
Vue familiarity is a nice-to-have
Familiarity with git is good
Ability to work independently with vague requirements
No assholes. It's one of our values.
Does that sound like you? DM me your resume and a sample project/portfolio link as a starting point and we'll go from there.
Oh, and I'm posting this here first before the company goes out through our normal channels. I'd love to staff this through this community if possible and give someone a chance who might not do well in the typical interview pipeline.

I should also call out the good actors. Enabling private DNS with quad9 completely removed the issue.
Quad9 isn’t an ad blocker, but it is a security DNS. It quietly drops or refuses to resolve a bunch of shady ad-tech, tracking, and fingerprinting domains. On sites that rely on huge real-time ad auctions, breaking even a few of those domains makes the entire ad unit fail to load. So the page looks “clean,” not because Quad9 blocks ads, but because the ad supply chain collapses when the bad actors can’t resolve.
I think it's extra cool that a company doing a few correct things can undermine so much shit almost accidentally. Kudos to that team.

I should call out bad actors. In this case it was https://befonts.com/

2025-11-23 00:17:28 UTC

A single page load on a basic font-download site triggered all of this:
29 separate ad-tech and tracking companies, each making multiple calls
Google’s entire ad stack (DoubleClick, AdServices, GStatic, GVT beacons, FundingChoices, anti-fraud checks)
Amazon’s ad marketplace (aax.amazon-adsystem.com)
Header-bidding networks like PubMatic, AppNexus/Xandr, Rubicon/Magnite, SmartAdServer, OneTag
Fingerprinting and identity-sync systems including Dotomi, LiveIntent, OnAudience, Evolution.ai, BTLabs
Cross-site device matchers (Bidswitch, DeepIntent, CPE Dotomi)
Telemetry/redirector nodes like 4DEX, Infolinks, Erne, Bumlam
Behavioral profiling engines (bttrack.com)
Dozens of DNS lookups in parallel just to build a single ad frame
A fragile multi-stage real-time auction, where every bidder must respond for the ad to render
Repeated fallbacks and retries, because the chain breaks constantly
Aggressive layout shifts, “expanding shelf” ads, and late-loading frames caused by auction timing
No functional relevance to the site, just monetization layers stacked on a simple font page
Silent third-party data exposure across global trackers and brokers
Nearly 2,400 logged network events for a page that should need maybe 20

@nprofile…dy33 interesting. The focus was on archive.today (Tucows in Canada) not archive.is (ISNIC in Iceland). Neither are under the FBI jurisdiction. The subpoena is utterly useless. They could have started an official Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) request, but they didn't. Unless Tucows just decides to volunteer the info at this point, there's no reason for anyone to be doing anything.
What a waste of time

Let's talk about mediocre hobbies. When we're very young it's easy to try anything and have fun doing so. Making funny sounds on a xylophone or drawing pictures with charcoal don't rely on the output for enjoyment.
Then we get older and the people who really excel at those skills make us feel like we're not good at things. Why draw as an adult if you're not able to get a face proportions correct?
Because it's still fun! I have a million hobbies. And my skill level is middling at most of them. Still fun! Still feels good to draw a dinosaur.

I got a vaccine booster for MMR today. I got my initial vaccine in the early 80s before the US moved to 2 shots. I'm about to travel into an outbreak so this seemed prudent.
I called the health center to find out what I needed to do. They gave me an address and said go there and ask. So I did, and they offered me boosters for all the childhood vaccinations. The whole lot cost me about $40.
For some of you this probably sounds normal. But I grew up on the con game that is US healthcare. This is cool.

Terrible idea: A website only 1 person can view at a time. If the tab loses focus it transfers to the next person in line. It should probably have an inactivity timeout too. For everyone else you just get your queue number. Oh! And if you're in the queue and your tab loses focus you lose your spot. Back of the line with ya!

#gemini protocol uses TLS, but has a history of preferring self-signed certificates. This led to the decision for clients to use TOFU (Trust on First Use) as the go-to method. We have TLSA/DANE available if your domain supports DNSSEC. With that, you can give your self-signed certificate trust, even on first use.
I've long promoted the idea that clients should implement this. The more clients there are that look for it, the more value there is in adding DANE records.
I made a proof-of-concept client in #rust that does just that. https://github.com/jamestomasino/gemini-rust-tlsa

If I take #AI out of the context of its resource costs and threats to art and truth and think about it purely from the convenience aspect it feels like talking to the computer on the Enterprise in #startrek .
"Computer, compile all the puns in the works of Shakespeare and cross reference them with cultural reference from that time."
or more specific to my daily use: "Computer, enable a vpn connection to Norway for this one app and lock down it's connections to avoid any data leaks."
That feels pretty cool. I wish it could be just that. I don't see a way to get from where we are to there safely, though. And the costs aren't worth the convenience.

2025-01-26 15:25:43 UTC

I don't want to add much more psychological burden on everyone feeling low right now, but it feels important to share a thought:
If you are in the US military or close to those who are, have a chat with them about where their line is for "following orders". Do that now, while you can.

Just had a platform survey me about the #AI features I'd like to see them add. My response was loud and clear:
I need to be able to disable AI features completely. My MSAs have rules governing the use of AI. If your platform can't disable it, many companies are not going to be able to use your software and stay legally compliant.
Feature #1 should be the off switch.
Please share this loudly everywhere.
