It’s a shame Kobo is well dumb. They’re raising the price of their VIP program to $20
It marginally valuable at the old price. The free VIP books, I’ve never claimed one. The monthly discount. Never on books I want. So really the bonus points for purchases which netted me maybe 1 book a year were the main value.
There’s no way I’ll recoup my $20 though. So guess I’m done with that.
Raise the price without adding a single new benefit. WTF is wrong with you Kobo?

It's that time of year where folks start talking about boycotting Amazon (which I am 100% onboard with). Please very much do that.
I'm always torn when the common path of that protest is "Shop indie bookstores”
Yes, BUT. Most indie bookstores don't stock indie authors.
Shop indie author websites. Shop Amazon competitors for ebooks. At a minimum, ask your local indie store to order the indie book you want. Colleen Hoover is doing just fine.

I'll never understand indie authors that talk about how bad Amazon is (for numerous reasons), yet.... even when not locked into Kindle Unlimited, don't publish wide. Is it laziness, ignorance? something else?
Like, what's the point in that? Saw a book that sounded interesting. Go through author's site, which links to amazon so I'm like, "OK, KU" I click through and nope. Book isn't in KU. Oh well. Guess not reading that.

Well, I am one. So they’re great. Obviously without readers, writers don’t have much of a reason to exist.
That said, some readers are annoying. The armchair editors, the “I don’t like this because it’s not how I’d do it, if I was a writer” types that are happy to share their opinions in reviews and emails to authors.
They’re part of the process, but can be exhausting sometimes.

Totally ok. Mine are 98% entertainment, sometimes other 2% are message/theme/etc. Sometimes just extra pop culture references.
It's also fine if your book is entirely themed around some concept and there's a clear message you hope the reader takes away. So long as you do it well, which is the hard part.

Yes, many and yes. Obviously I aim to keep the influence to a minimum. There's a fine line between inspiration and cribbing.
But yes for sure several authors that I enjoy reading and re-reading have been a big influence on my writing. From how they handle certain plot devices to simply how they handle dialogue.

I know Mastodon isn't perfect and at the key time it wasn't an easy onboard. It still bums me out that collectively we had the opportunity to not be subjected to algorithmic feeds and our attention being sold as a product (And of course the harassment and horribleness), and so many said. “But my likes and RTs, yo” and ran en masse to threads and bluesky.

No you aren’t. The problem isn't TikTok
The problem is tech companies feeling like they have exclusive, inalienable right to every scrap of data about their users, including tracking us across platforms. Tracking what we like, who we communicate with, etc. and then doing what they like with it, including selling it to other tech companies.
We need user privacy and data protection across the board!
