I ("woke" and "Leftist) have always admired Owen Jones. It's hard to disagree with his analysis here as we continue to "do the same thing expecting a different result". When I listen to those on the (far) right in this country and abroad, I hear them merely doubling down on the actions of past governments, actions that have brought us to where we are today with the rise of "strong men", autocrats and dictators. Not an enticing future unless we change our ways...

Why is a call for extra expenditure in the nation's budget always to be achieved by "cutting an unaffordable welfare bill"? There are many (and I include myself in this) who could afford tax rises to those nearer Scandinavian levels. We could then properly afford to give support to those who need it. And as a "by the way" - perhaps we could cut the budget for nuclear-equipped submarines. To zero. 2/2 https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/apr/14/starmer-accused-of-corrosive-complacency-about-defence-by-ex-head-of-nato

I see George Robertson, former NATO Secretary General, calling for cuts in welfare to fund military expansion and describing Starmer's "Corrosive complacency". Whilst I see that as a call for yet another imposition of austerity on the British public, an increase in general taxation described elsewhere as "one Cappuccino a day", I do think that "Corrosive complacency" fits Starmer well. I know many for whom one cappuccino would be an extravagance they could ill afford, never mind one a day. 1/2

The Strait of Hormuz is open to all shipping.

Negotiations to reopen the Strait fail at the first hurdle (Why would you let Vance negotiate anyway?).
The US will blockade the Strait now and intercept and charge vessels that have transited said Strait.
No - that can't be right...

Whenever the topic of GDP comes up, I'm reminded of Robert F. Kennedy's dismantling of GDP as a metric in 1968 with the summation of his speech: "it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile." increasingly economic activity appears to have a somewhat tenuous relationship with the well-being of society as a whole, many of whose members have seen incomes stagnate while rent seeking entities take an ever larger portion of that already stretched income.

@nprofile…la7y ...and all his monuments to himself will be torn down and his name erased from the buildings and golf courses. Better still would be that he became a non-person, as though he had never existed, a name that parents teach their little children never to utter lest the ghost of Trump comes to them in the night...!

@nprofile…la7y Quite right (both in your "moaning" (really - I hope that's not how you see it!) and in the fact that by labelling abused children as anything else we minimise the crimes done).

"In truth there is no AI industry, there is no such thing as AGI or ASI research or ASI safety, there is only the recurrence here of something that American capitalism can’t stop itself from doing again and again in history – creating thin air money out of simplistic, hyped ideas and greed fuelled optimism, creating another economic bubble of vast proportions, bigger than the dot com bubble, maybe bigger than the 2008 crash." https://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2026/02/22/the-ai-backlash-is-real-and-its-winning/

You know that beauty is only skin deep. And you don't need me to tell you not to feel inferior or to apologise - or that no one should ever be made to feel inferior. The world would be a far better and fairer place without rankings or hierarchies. But what do I know?!

Just not worth it though! I have the feeling that people like that feel that they are in the ascendancy and that they can just say whatever comes into their thoughtless heads. Please, no punching though!! 🙂

@nprofile…la7y It ought to be surprising (but it really isn't) how often ideas of (white Anglo-Saxon) supremacy in public office coexists with similar ideas about women and minorities. These pathetic men want to dominate those that they perceive as being "lesser human beings" and that includes their poor wives and offspring.

@nprofile…la7y Yes, Geri, I would absolutely LOVE to see the whole house of cards that is the Royal Family brought down by the well-known indiscretions of the younger brother. I have never believed that there is anything special about those who would seem themselves - on the basis of bloodline alone - as being above the rest of us upstart hoi polloi. Under the skin they are simply fallible human beans (and some seem to have been especially fallible down the ages).

It's well to remember the murderous actions of the Nazi fascists. Holocaust Remembrance Day is needed more than ever. Yes, as @nprofile…d8nd has reminded me this morning, all manner of minorities were targeted, rounded up put into ghettos and camps and murdered.
