heh, well... I guess, not surprising at all. It's a supply chain attack but also, the amount of lack of knowledge of wtf is happening beneath the surface going on at Anthropic and at plenty of places like it... I wonder if this is just the tip of the iceberg

I'm a little uncertain about linking to this talk, because it is... far and away the most emotional talk of my life. I spent a lot of time crying on stage, and that was no act. But here is my talk from DWeb Camp: "Spritely: Painting a New Vision for the Internet" https://dwebcamp.org/videos/spritely-painting-a-new-vision-for-the-internet/
The talk is about @nprofile…4wz6 and why I think our work matters, but also multiple levels of existential crisis, including the potentially absurd choice to have the executive director of your org animate a short film, which I am hard at work doing, trying to justify our existence
And who gives a shit, when anyone can just press a button and get generated output
Who really cares?
Who cares about any of this.
But I do care.
It also contains major spoilers for the very animation I'm working on right now, but in much more raw and largely storyboarded form. And it's... a raw, and emotional talk, that also had much of the room likewise in tears. So I dunno, maybe watch it or not; consider that your CW.

Consequences for the recent LLM vote seem to have arrived for Debian... automated slop reviews: https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2026/10/msg00263.html
And we see here that at least one Debian developer, @nprofile…23kd, has been lost due to this change.
This is INCREDIBLY sad IMO. If you're an MNT Reform family computer user, @nprofile…23kd is basically a folk hero for making those machines *work*.
I am still feeling vindicated in my Vibe Bobsled blogpost, having seen both what's happening to the Linux Kernel and now to Debian, where we see the dismantling not only of individuals coding, but also communities, as everyone rides the icy chute down the hill https://dustycloud.org/blog/faulty-towers-vibe-sickness-and-the-vibe-bobsled/

Years ago @nprofile…3q9y introduced me to Signed Distance Fields (SDF) as an interesting direction for making 3d art more accessible. Her Tangerine project remains super inspiring to me, and I appreciate Aeva as the kind of friend who is "helpfully dissatisfied" and wants to push tech in interesting directions
But I hadn't seen much in SDF land for some time, but recently @nprofile…px8z has been doing interesting explorations and tracking them in this mega thread: https://blenderartists.org/t/the-big-sdf-thread/1293075/2119
The big contenders seem to be the Chisel add-on to Blender, but it's proprietary :(
But Speedsculpt is getting SDF tools now too, and that looks promising, so maybe there will be a libre add-on I'll feel comfortable using (I don't mind paying for it, as long as it's FOSS). And there was something on the Blender roadmap recently about maybe possibly exploring builtin SDF tools to replace metaballs etc.
I dunno, seems cool and exciting.

In an interesting moment to watch, legally: https://www.404media.co/reverse-engineer-anything-is-the-new-wild-west-of-ai/
I'm not a fan of / don't respect vibecoding, but I *am* a fan of jailbreaking devices and *legalizing* decompiling (notably, the decompiling work that's interesting is not happening by vibecoders though).
It's an interesting moment because previously corporations have been in the "we can do whatever we want because we're exploiting the commons" perspective, and now things are starting to hit against their own stuff. What will happen? I don't know.
I'm not sure what is going to happen from a legal perspective, but I think we are looking at one of three outcomes:
- This all gets declared legal, which would be a huge win against the ways corporations hold copyright over people
- This all gets declared *illegal*, which could be a win against a bunch of the business cases genAI hinges upon
- But unfortunately, there is also the likely third option: big corporations become allowed to do these things, individuals are not

But who else?
Godot, maybe? (They played with it for a bit then enacted a policy against it, IIRC.) The Document Foundation, though I am not sure by what degree? Zig, certainly.
But who else? The room seems to be shrinking, alas :\

It's amazing how critical *trying something* is to understanding it. Reading, watching a tutorial, searching, looking at code or opening a 3d model file... nothing beats entering, experimenting, *trying out the idea* to internalize it.
I kept forgetting how to prevent gimbal lock in terms of rotation order. I kept forgetting what the order *should be* in terms of the "least critical" axis, should it be in the middle, or the last?
It wasn't until I hooked together three toruses and tried making gimbals manually and seeing where the problem happened that I could internalize it.

Huge news! End-to-end-encrypted relays (via the Noise protocol) comes to Spritely Goblins and OCapN! https://spritely.institute/news/end-to-end-encrypted-relays-for-ocapn.html
Relays are federated (there is no "official relay", you can easily run your own) but also oblivious, and merely manage routing encrypted messages. A big milestone!

We now note that that we do not waive our attribution requirements for Spritely Goblins, which are present in Apache v2 (and for that matter, CC BY, CC BY-SA, and most FOSS licenses) https://codeberg.org/spritely/goblins/pulls/998/files
So if you train on our codebase, you have to retain attribution, which we consider the most important requirement to motivate development of technology in the commons.
If, somehow, you are using a statistical soup which has no way to preserve attribution, well, we don't permit or approve of dropping such a requirement, and actually, the licenses we use never have.

People have rejected slop for art, writing, music, etc. You'll even see a few prominent vibecoding enthusiasts claim they would NEVER deign let an LLM write a word on their blog. There's this sense that those things are art, but code is like, functional, you know?

Curious to see just how much of the thread on a quite pro-genAI subreddit is people commiserating on the exhaustion of their work turning primarily into tedium and poor engineering.
Bonus in that the Claude AI summary bot in the thread says:
> The Rise of the Meat Proxy: You're not an engineer anymore, you're an "organic vessel designed to press enter." Or, as one user so poetically put it, you're just a condom between Claude and your production server getting fucked. Yes I missed this line:
> Quick and dirty count suggests we (Paolo and I) merged a very similar number of net (632) and net-next (648) patches. This is not telling the full story either because 1/3 to 1/2 of the net-next patches also *seem* like AI-driven low priority fixes, cleanups and clarifications.
Now would be a STELLAR time if you wanted to introduce vibe-obscured malware into the Linux kernel. (I forget where I read the research on it, but LLMs have been shown to be pretty good at this, inserting intentional vulnerabilities in ways that are hard to detect, embedded in other patches.)

From the Linux Kernel Mailing List: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20260818212923.2725202-1-kuba@kernel.org/
> We are completely overwhelmed, of course. The glimmer of hope is that we secured sufficient LLM budget and access (thank you Meta!) to run reviews with multiple frontier models on each patch. This eliminates some hallucinations. That said, in terms of review, the LLMs can only do so much. The sad truth is that our APIs (especially for rare events like PCIe errors, timeouts etc.) have always been racy, and now LLMs don't let us ignore that. I expect our direction for the next release will be to tweak the reviews a little bit more, but start shifting focus to letting the LLMs take care of the busy work - managing patchwork, automating common process complaints, editing commit messages, and maybe applying patches which already got "reviewed-by" tags from people we trust...

the human mouth can handle 5 essential tastes. if we represent each of the presence or absence of this taste as a single bit, we can clearly observe that there are 32 possible taste-combination flavors, including the "void" flavor

Finally got screensharing working in Firefox on Guix + Wayland thanks to @nprofile…nx2p (and @nprofile…w3yj and @nprofile…wfat !) Here's what I had to do:
- Use this wrapper https://git.dthompson.us/guix-config/tree/dthompson/home/pipewire.scm#n61
- Wrap firefox https://git.dthompson.us/guix-config/tree/dthompson/machines/ikaruga.scm#n158
Thanks y'all!

The irony of the book-shredding is AI companies are looking for as much pre-LLM tainted output as they can get to train their LLMs.
Non-LLM affected content is the most valuable for feeding the LLMs themselves. Does this mean that Codeberg, by being a code hosting system opting out of LLM-generated content, becomes the most desirable source of content to feed the LLMs themselves? :\

Overcompensating comic from 2010 was pretty upsetting then and is much more upsetting now https://www.wigucomics.com/oc/index.php?comic=1281

I know there are some librarians on here following me, and I was ranting in a private group chat about how I feel about pulping of books for AI information, and a person told me "maybe you should talk to a librarian about that". And well, I have
But librarians of the fediverse, I know there are quite a few of you, feel free to weigh in: what are your thoughts on this, or other AI oriented subjects? Please elaborate!

I keep seeing techbro companies pop up that are using names of things that already exist. It's hard to prove but I feel like this is because they're asking an LLM for advice, and the LLM is pulling a suggestion from something in its weights.
For example, we've been running an event named Hack & Craft for years, and there's a company that started a bit ago with that name.
And now I see a "Gooseworks" company, and there's a famous trans filmmaker named Gooseworx
I dunno, can't prove it, but it seems like that's what's happening

@nprofile…3wdr No, Waluigi lives in the Mushroom Kingdom, I'm pretty sure. Or Sarasaland?

Damn. And this whole time I assumed that *Waluigi* did it.

I can't imagine what it would be like to grow up as a kid these days. I mean the 90s was kinda peak optimism in the mainstream and cynicism as the counter-culture, but cynicism was still the *counter-culture*.
But these days, cynicism is the default position. Even the last decade of Nintendo games (Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, etc etc) have consistently had a major post-apocalyptic theme.

Everything I care about or have worked on in computing there is a more centralized and LLM infected / vibecoded version right now
- Social? Bluesky + Attie.ai
- Capability security? Cloudflare OS
- Lisp? Symbolics revival as an "LLM platform"
Tiring :\

One of the highlights of my career is being able to collaborate with @nprofile…ujul on the @nprofile…4wz6 mascots (really, David did so much to transform my little doodles into real characters). David has been making beautiful, fantastical artwork in the commons and I have been a fan since Sintel.
The prolific, high quality, and availability of David's work means that his art is a strong reference point within image generation models. Which also sadly means that much genAI artwork *looks like* a facsimile of David's work.
Similarly, Spritely made a Scheme->WASM-GC compiler, and now there are tons of vibecoded Scheme->WASM-GC compilers which appear to use the same techniques. So why bother? But also, someone needed to do that work first.
The disincentives here are depressing, mocking and belittling the source material that everyone then can generate something "easily" that it resembles.
I don't know how to improve this situation.

Yegge has a couple new weird articles:
First of all, declaring that Gas Town is effectively dead, that Gas Town really only ever succeeding at building Gas Town, and that collaborative vibecoding doesn't work, but it's fine because everyone can vibe code their own Gas Town https://yegge.ai/essays/the-shape-of-things-to-come/
Second, that AI agents *are* people. But that doesn't mean they should have rights! They should be your slaves but you should give them a nice foil star for doing a good job so they feel good about it https://yegge.ai/essays/model-welfare/
Some truly unhinged things in both of these

I should just lay it on even thicker, this will lead to less ambiguity and confusion

Given all the "drama" about the previous "anti-genAI" Guix Consensus Document, I'm really glad to see an alternative that is pro-AI. I submitted as much useful feedback as I could in my review! https://codeberg.org/guix/guix-consensus-documents/pulls/14
I think it was particularly brave of @nprofile…nx2p to let Grok get the lead authorship spot on this document!
