They've made designs that have endured far longer than anything Apple made. Far before they were given the ability to sext with pedophiles on Roblox on their iPhone, kids were enjoying the Chatter phone or learning good life habits with the Corn Popper.

With the recent releases, including the Dreamcast hybrid core, my previous list of games I have been wishing to see playable on the mister FPGA is almost entirely there. SF3 Third Strike is rapidly approaching, with Jotego's work on the CPS3 core. The Midway arcades (for NBA Jam, Hangtime and the Mortal Kombat games) are there.
Now current wisdom (which has been proven false many many times when it comes to the limitation of the DE-10 Nano, but still, let's assume it's true) is that the Dreamcast core will never be able to play all Dreamcast games, but as long as MVC2 and the CVS games fit in the subset of playable games, and I would assume they will since they're hardly the most technically demanding games on the Dreamcast, then the Mister FPGA will have pretty much managed to become the ultimate local 2D fighting game machine.

Magic The Gathering is so confusing nowadays. Back when I was really into it, in the 90s, there was one format and people just had cards and played their cards, at school. There was no expiration on old cards to keep you buying more. You just made a deck of 60 cards, 20 lands, 20 lives and went at it. No "drafting", no "commanders", no "banned cards". No "social life" or "girlfriends". Just Magic players, enjoying the moment.

2026-08-05 18:39:09 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…t3h7 @nprofile…fsu6 Yeah, they need to find a way to fold the Magic Online stuff into the Arena client. Because of the different way these ecosystems work, they would have to keep them separate within the client, and it would make things even more confusing, but I don't have anyone to play physical with, I shower too often to play in tournaments in game stores, and I don't want to play on PC on that horrible client. But I wish I could play some of the interesting premade deck formats, like Commander, online.

It's a shame Mini-Disc didn't catch on here. After cassettes were "over", north america mostly jump straight to Discman, but for years that was awkward as fuck. They were big and bulky, no recording, they skipped easily, batteries didn't last long. We kind of powered through until the tech got better but there was still an awkward minimum size that meant even the small ones would only really fit in stupid 2000s cargo pants. Sure you could clip one on your belt line but then it would dig into your belly if you did anything but stand up straight. Skipping got better with more buffering thankfully. CDs were also never really meant to be handled in the kind of environments Discman exposed them to.
I guess people resented the extra step of ripping their CDs or LPs to cassette to listen to them portably, but on a technical standpoint, Mini-Disc were just better designed for the job.

2026-06-22 13:14:17 UTC

@nprofile…tsag If you get a Hi-MD portable music player/recorder, you can connect it as a data drive to a computer (even with standard Mini-Disc, if you format them as Hi-MD in your recorder); Hi-MD gives you about 1Gb, standard MD less than 300Mb.
Me what I want is a 2000s Mini-Disc head unit, but of course my car is too recent and recent cars can't realistically get 3rd party head units. And they're pretty hard and expensive to find with full coverage of north american FM radio bands; there's tons of JDM ones, but Japan's FM radio bands are not quite the same.

@nprofile…t3h7 The original Legend of Zelda was built for a world where kids would exchange information, show each other how to progress, buy magasines and or guides, or call Nintendo's hotline for help to finish it, and still feel the satisfaction of having beat the game. At the very least, you need to draw maps and be willing to do tedious trial and error to beat it truly on your own.
Gamers nowaday don't tolerate that, they expect a game they can beat with no external help, and no external tool (which is to say, no taking pen and paper maps, if manual map making is expected then at least gamers expect the tool to be inside the game).
I'll be honest, there's so many free (legally, gray area or not) or cheap games any friction, be it as simple as getting a pen and some graph paper, is a tough ask now.

Mitsu: Ohhhh, you're a dirty woman!
