I guess I just see the barriers to entry and the friction built into to Mastodon to be so high that I don't think it'll gain enough traction to fully supplant Twitter.
I'm willing to flex on some things for not just a better experience for myself, but for the communities I'd like to see.
So far the Bluesky experience doesn't just match Twitter, it exceeds it. All it needs is more accounts to move.

Oh yeah, search works!

Find me on Bluesky here: https://bsky.app/profile/justinfagnani.com
I'll probably be mostly posting there. The UX is just a lot better than Mastodon. I see masses of normal people joining and participating. Algorithmic feeds are all that. Starter packs and block lists are really useful.

I argued against TLA a lot in standards meetings. It has a lot of hazards when used in libraries. It was already known that it could slow down module loading in browsers, but the require(esm) issue is basically the same, but worse.
I hope people only use it for top-level scripts.

Oh, I don't mean that you'd opt int to have your posts indexed, but to opt-in to who executes your searches.
Posts are public, so anyone should be able to index them, just like the rest of the open web. That's the only way you'll a real global index.

I'd love if individual users could choose their global search provider.
The problem with instances choosing it is that it creates an even more inconsistent experience across different instances and raises the stakes for choosing your instance when you join, when such implications aren't clear to new users.

Looking for new accounts to follow. Give me your best:
* Web dev, especially web components, CSS, and cool art
* Black politics and culture. I miss Black Twitter over here a lot.
* Urbanism, transit, and YIMBY
* Democracy. Run for something, FairVote, and similar.
* Oakland

ok that video is just weird, and I don't think has anything to do with web components? I'm not going to watch the whole thing either way :)

That's my problem with how Mastodon approaches search. I *want* global search, not just search of what my instance has seen.

Interesting. Who does this indexing?

So I haven't used Mastodon in a while...
Have their been any improvements in discoverability?
After your initial setup, how do you all find the accounts you want to follow? How do you hear about people joining?
And how's search? Is there a good centralized fediverse search service yet?

I'm not really sure that I've seen specific criticisms received any better. Do you have recent examples of simplistic bashing?
