This really seems to be right. Ever since I read Charles Tilly's paper "War Making and State Making as Organized Crime" (1985), I see nation-states as large-scale protection rackets thus criminal enterprises. That the so-called "United States of America" has an open criminal as its "leader," makes perfect sense. We don't need nation-states and never did. As Sophie Scott-Brown said, you are not going to deal with climate collapse, a world-wide problem, with a bunch of nation-states all only looking out for their own interests, money, and power. It just can't work that way.

Again reading about other cities and weather, I'm reminded that dewpoints have also changed here in the middle part of Maryland.
In summers past, a dewpoint of 65F-68F or 18C-20C was uncomfortable but it was what you got with heat. Now, those dewpoints are quite often from 73F-75F or 22C-24C and sometimes even higher (I've seen 77F or 25C). The term "dank" has been used, somewhat humorously, to say how this feels on your skin. But such high dewpoints mean the air is very high in moisture and can be stifling.
I cannot recall having such high dewpoints until within the last ten years or so.

Reading about temps in other cities, I can say that, around Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay, September was a month I always looked forward to because it meant temps going to 90F or higher, 32C or higher, was very unlikely. That changed in September 2023 when I was shocked by a string of days that went into the mid or upper 90s. That showed me beyond a doubt that things were getting hotter. So, here we are after a pretty nice August overall, with temps going back up into the low 90s. More than forty years around here and this never used to happen.

A Hazda woman was talking about how they dealt with young men. She said, "Young men need to be gentled, that's what we do." One of the ways this is done is that no hunter, no matter how successful they may be at the moment, is praised. Even when they bring back good meat, others turn their nose up at it and act as if it's not worth eating. Doing this keeps hunters from getting "swell heads" and also keeps jealousy at bay. It's well known that even the best hunter can have a "slump," so no hunter is ever held above any of the others.

The actions of the so-called "United States of America's" governments have, all too often, been horrendous and, looking back now, terribly damaging in both loss of life and economic strangulation.

Sophie Scott-Brown is a speaker, writer, and teacher on anarchy in the UK.
In an interview, she said that one book that had really gotten her more into anarchy was David Graeber's "Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology."
This utterly delighted me because this book got me to thinking far more about anarchy, too!
Graeber's small book (he called it a "pamphlet") has led me to question everything we call "democracy" but also has led me to rethink how we look at history and past societies and people.
I really wish more people would read this. Even if you are not "into" anarchy, this will make you think about a lot of things that are being done today and whether or not they should be rethought or ditched altogether.

Those of us who are older now so can remember pretty clearly that, since the end of WWII, being "anti-fascist" was something you didn't even think twice about and could take for granted that almost everyone was. If the 47 regime is so set on labeling anyone who challenges their criminal activities as "anti-fascist," it seems very clear that the regime is thereby declaring itself, quite openly, to be a fascist regime. One can hope, though likely in vain, that "reporters" will bring this up with the criminals in this regime and push them to answer this.

When people who lived 50, 70, or 100 thousand years ago woke up in the morning, what "plans" did they make? I'd guess they were thinking about how to get food for the day and talking to each other about how to find food, whether plant or animal. Maybe they were thinking about whether or not to move their group to another area soon because they were running out of forage and prey in the area they were in now. That, it may be, was how far their planning went.

Hour walk near a swamp this afternoon, took a little detour to a footbridge I rarely visit. Peering over the railing, I saw something big moving in the swampwater below me. It was a 2-foot long snapping turtle. I watched it climb over a beaver dam into deeper water. As it sank under the surface, a muskrat came over another part of the dam! Further along near another part of the swamp were 3 mud turtles and a frog on a log. But, wait! There's more! Loping back along the trail, I made a hasty halt to allow not one, but two 2-foot black snakes (rat snakes?) to cross in front of me. What a wild life.

It is not about making up a "plan" before we even know what problems will show up and then refusing to budge from that plan no matter how clear it is that it is not going to work.

Steven Miller has made the same argument about "how the world works" as Sepulveda did centuries ago. That argument is "Whoever has the power to overcome everyone else has the right to use that power to overcome everyone else." Sepulveda used it to excuse horrific atrocities against indigenous people by Spanish "conquistadores" in what became "America." Some guy named Adolf Hitler used that argument too. It's a favorite of all sorts of monsters and criminals. What always astonishes me about the people who make that argument is that they assume that they are the ones with that kind of power and that, somehow, they are entitled to use that power any way they like. It never seems to cross their mind that the monsters they create will someday turn on them.

Many times I see "anarchy" and "barbarism" used as meaning chaos and mayhem (anarchy) and behavior that violates human rights or is violent (barbarism.) "Barbarians" were, in Roman times, likely the freest people in Europe. They lived in a state of anarchy, that is, they had no rulers or emperors, they lived freely and made their own decisions. Of course, the Romans hated this and treated barbarians as if they were primitive and backward when it was really the Romans who were behaving abominably toward other human beings. So, "barbarism" should be removed from any list of terms that have to do with violent or abusive behavior.

"Christianity" is a political ideology. As such, it is not and cannot be anarchic. Anarchy or direct democracy is a process, a way of deciding what problems we need to deal with and then to come up with ways to do that but by consensus not ideology or hierarchy, that is, "top-down" rulings. "Christianity" like "Judaism" and "Islam" is a misogynistic, fascistic, and patriarchal ideology. It insists, demands, that we take its tenets as "objective truth." That is not anarchy.

Trump looked worn and haggard in this performance. What we still have to fear is his maniacal base who will vote for him no matter how crazy he gets. As some have said, don't let your guard down, do whatever you can to get Harris and Walz elected.

In one business jet I flew (as a pilot), there were "rails" like a sled underneath the fuselage. They were made of Kevlar and the reason for them was, if the landing gear failed to come down, the jet could be landed on the Kevlar rails and the fuselage (and its contents) would be largely or even totally unharmed. I am not aware whether or not this has ever happened in real life, but what a great idea.
