Who really owns your craft?
What if Bitcoin could change not just how musicians get paid, but how they build careers, connect with fans and take ownership of their creativity?
Coming up on What’s Haute with Halima, we’re joined by Nat Cole, a Bitcoin community builder with eight years of experience in the space.
From 2140ART and 2140Music to Bitfest UK, Nat is helping bring Bitcoin into the worlds of music, art and culture.
We’re exploring the new music economy, the opportunities Bitcoin and Lightning could unlock for creators, and what genuine creative independence might look like.
Because Bitcoin isn’t just changing how we think about money. It’s challenging us to rethink who gets to own, create and benefit from the value they produce.

What do you think Bitcoin can change for independent artists?

That’s really interesting, Johnny. What was it back in 2015 that made Bitcoin click for you? Was there a particular moment, or was it something you’d been questioning for a while?

Exactly. But what I find even more interesting is that Bitcoin doesn’t eliminate the temptation to build debt-based systems. It simply removes the ability to print our way out of their consequences.
Which raises a bigger question: does sound money actually change financial behaviour, or does it just force us to confront it?

This is such an important distinction. Bitcoin may remove interest from the issuance of money, but it doesn’t automatically remove riba from how we choose to use that money.
Perhaps the deeper question is whether we’re genuinely rethinking our financial relationships or simply rebuilding the same systems on top of better money.

I went to the Muslim Bitcoin Summit expecting conversations about Bitcoin. I left questioning some of the fundamental assumptions we make about money, faith, and financial freedom.
What made the experience particularly memorable wasn’t just the subject matter. It was the speakers who challenged me to look at familiar ideas through a completely different lens.
Harris Irfan was particularly thought-provoking. His exploration of fiat money, debt-based financial systems, and Islamic finance made me reflect on something we rarely stop to question: why have we accepted a financial system built so heavily around debt and interest as the norm?
He brought an important ethical dimension to the conversation, connecting Islamic financial principles with broader questions about what makes money fair and trustworthy.
Simon Dixon brought another powerful perspective, connecting the dots between Bitcoin, banking, technology, and financial sovereignty.
What stood out to me was the bigger picture he encouraged us to consider: Bitcoin isn’t simply an alternative asset. It raises important questions about who controls money, how financial power is distributed, and whether individuals can have greater ownership of their financial futures.
Together, their perspectives made the conversations around riba, sound money, and financial independence feel far more relevant than abstract economic debates.
But what I also loved was the atmosphere in the room.
People had travelled from different parts of the world, bringing different experiences, beliefs, and perspectives. There was a genuine curiosity about what Bitcoin could mean for communities seeking more ethical and inclusive financial systems.
Through my work exploring Bitcoin and the future of money, I’ve heard many arguments about decentralisation and financial freedom. What this summit added was a deeper conversation about the values that should underpin the financial systems we build.
I didn’t leave agreeing with everything I heard. I left with something more valuable: new perspectives, sharper questions, and a greater appreciation for why these conversations matter.
Because perhaps the most important question isn’t simply what Bitcoin can do for us, but what kind of financial future we want it to help create.
