Just a thought: algorithmic social media is doing the same thing to online communities that cars did to cities. It is creating little pockets of isolated individuals in a sea of people instead of creating communities. It gives people an impression of being surrounded by people without actually forming real connections

My best friend got the house!

2026-05-11 18:10:57 UTC

I’ve been very sad the past couple days which is pretty unusual for me lately. I’ve been very good about appreciating the small things and living in the moment.
Right now it is almost the ideal to be outside for me and I’m sitting on the front porch trying to read. And instead of appreciating the bird sounds and peace of it all I’m just thinking about how about six years ago Lisa would have been out here on a day like today. In fact, those were Lisa’s last happy moments probably. She just found so much joy in the beauty of our front yard and neighborhood.
Oh well. I’m sure I’ll snap out of this melancholy state soon.

2026-05-08 22:03:35 UTC

I was telling a friend yesterday that I finally put Lisa’s remains out. She knows me very well and immediately asked if I meant throw them away because I’m generally very unsentimental about things. She was relieved to hear I just meant I have them displayed next to Lisa’s tea stuff.

I was thinking today about how nice it would be to not have catastrophic climate change looming over us. Can you imagine living a life without worry about biosphere collapse?

2025-12-06 13:39:57 UTC

I think it is funny that I didn't even go to my family's thanksgiving extravaganza but I'm still having to send my therapist a note on Saturday morning because of the splash damage I got from talking to my sister yesterday.

2025-12-01 20:45:53 UTC

Today we had our first snow storm since Lisa died. These days would always be the most stressful. Lisa didn’t do well with snow. It was just too bright for her.
But it is just another relaxing day with pretty scenery. It is very weird how my life has changed in the past six months.

2025-11-11 13:36:33 UTC

I have a tendency to say "This is the worst day of my life" when something mildly inconvenient happens to me.
My dear friend told me yesterday that her and partner have taken to doing the same, but with a twist. They say "This is the worst day of Thomas' life".
She said that this happened yesterday when the chicken, pepper, and rice leftovers didn't have any chicken in it. "This is the worst day of Thomas' Life!"

2025-11-11 13:34:10 UTC

I'm about to do a lot of posts. 3 today including this one.

I kind of hate the arguments about how migrants make the communities they move to more economically prosperous. That is true, but the real reason we should support our migrant brothers and sisters is because they are people like anyone else and should be able to move around wherever they please for whatever reason.

So I’m burned out on my favorite game, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. I just keep on killing really promising characters because I don’t have the sort of focus I need.
I’m reading a book series about a fantasy tavern. The Wandering Inn, it’s fun and very very very long which is nice because I don’t want to think about reality.
So I have a hankering for a fantasy tavern simulator. I thought it would be a niche game category, but there are shitloads of games on steam.
Has anyone played this genre? And if so, which one should I buy?

Lisa saw a new doctor today who specializes in complex cases. She came to the house and apparently she is good friends with the best doctor Lisa has ever had. She was a resident under his supervision. But she was very nice and seemed very with it.
I’m happy that it went so well. We have so much baggage with doctors that I spent the past few weeks just worried that she would be horrible to Lisa like so many have been.

I keep getting this fragment of a memory come to mind from when I was very young. It was when I was living in Massachusetts, so I had to be less than eight years old. But it was hot one summer and our ac went out or we didn’t have ac. I don’t remember. But it was unusual and I was sleeping in the basement.
And I just remember moving in the hot house with no lights on. For some reason this memory comes up every time those conditions are replicated lately. I never turn on the lights due to Lisa’s photophobia and we’ve had some hot days lately. It isn’t even a formative memory or anything. Just weird.

When one person doesn’t have due process rights, none of us do. You could be one of those 200+ people in CECOT! These people were not tried or put in front of a judge. They were just sent to a torture concentration camp because some asshole in ICE decided they should be sent there. That could be you if you hold views the a cop doesn’t like. Or maybe they want your property? Maybe you looked at them funny? It doesn’t matter. They can black bag YOU.

I listened to this mornings It Could Happen Here. It was about the backlash to Musk. I'm honestly surprised at the number of arsons targeting Tesla dealerships. I thought it was just a meme on the internet, but apparently there really have been a lot of them.
It also struck me the way that the right covered the arsons. It was always framed as heinous violence. But it doesn't sound like anyone has been hurt? Just a bunch of property damage... but then again property is the most important thing I guess.

But for some reason I looked up quiet vacuums the other day, and bought a cordless Dyson. I was able to vacuum while she washed her hands! I don’t think she even noticed the noise. I’m very excited. I grew good about ignoring how gross it was.

@nprofile…lypn Margaret Killjoy’s Live Like the World Is Dying is a great podcast in this vain. Her and a group of like minded folk talk about preparedness or adjacent things every week. One of her constant refrains is that the most effective way to prepare is through community. Your neighbors are always your number one resource. But then she goes on and also talks about individual preparedness.
Here is an excellent link to one of the shows. Margaret’s substack also has an excellent article on making a go bag.

@nprofile…gk57 Since November I’ve been adding to my freeze dried food selection once a month. It is a supplemental to rice and legumes that would be staples in an emergency. I keep 30-60 lbs of brown rice that I rotate in the house because we eat a lot of it.
I also went ahead and purchased durable goods that I was planning on purchasing late in 2025. More solar panels for my generator and more batteries. I also got a portable ac unit/heat pump.
And I stocked up on 3m auras. I think I bought 300. This would normally last me years but I’m going to be supplying my in laws with them so I might need to buy a lot more since they aren’t hermits.
I bought a lot of Lisa’s otc meds. I was able to convince the pharmacist to send me three month worth of all her meds.
I’ve also purchased a bag that I’m going to make into an emergency bag. That is a work in progress though.

I don’t put them up permanently but I bring them out every four months and set them up in my driveway facing south to charge the system. I put my car at the top of my driveway so someone doesn’t drive down it and destroys my panels.
I was hoping to never charge my batteries with ac but I’m doing that right now because we are going to potentially get a big snow and ice storm in the next few days.

Still a bit miffed about the cancellation of Christmas with the whole family. It would have been the first time in years I saw most of them.
I’m guessing them knowing that I wouldn’t see people indoors or without a mask had something to do with the cancellation.
But piece of advice for dealing with people with hard lives: Don’t commit to something if you aren’t going to follow through. It is cruel to set expectations and then dash them.

Migration is just normal. It is something humans have done forever. I like my migrant neighbors and think they enrich the community. People should be able to flee famine, war, instability, etc. Honestly, they should be able to go places just from curiosity.
I wonder if a lot of the antimigrant sentiment is people being unable to conceive of migration without trying to coerce the population already living there. Settler colonialism are just so firmly woven into the western psyche.

@npub1lgd…e4sf It’s funny, I’ve had that same thought about living on a space station.
And I don’t know about the indoor air quality monitor unless you have a good way to remediate the air. I purchased a radon detector six months ago and it just produces anxiety without actionable information.
The radon level in my house is quite low. But it spikes occasionally (still “safe” levels) and knowing that doesn’t help me.

Today wasn’t a great day.
I was grumpy all day, probably because of all the prep work I did this morning. And I’m just tired even though I didn’t wake up any earlier.
The soup I made wasn’t good. A first for this batch of cooking I’ve been doing for the past few weeks.
And Gidget tripped while playing ball today. So now it is going to be a struggle to get her excited about it again as long as Lisa isn’t getting her excited indoors.

@npub1lgd…e4sf Oh you don’t need to look it up. I was just wondering if you had a recipe you liked. Thank you for talking about it. I look forward to trying it.

@npub1lgd…e4sf This isn’t an answer. Sorry! You can ignore this if you wish.
But do you have a good recipe for Haldi Doodh? I’ve never had it and would love to try it.

@npub1lgd…e4sf @npub12dz…rxx4 I admire that amount of obliviousness. I wish I could have some of it. I’m pretty sure I would have migrated to another country and changed my name if I did that.
I can’t even watch cringy comedy without pausing constantly let alone actually having it happen in reality.

Can you imagine how nice our world would be if we designed it for disabled people first? Cleaned air in buildings, walkable cities, accessible and available public transit, cultural masking when ill, etc.
It’d benefit everyone, and it would make transitioning to being a disabled person easier because you wouldn’t have to change habits. It’s allow people to remain part of their community, which I can tell you is maybe the worst part of being disabled for us is the neglect.

@npub1lgd…e4sf I think how much I hated school was a big reason I didn’t have kids.
I think I rationalized my feelings by telling myself it was about climate change and just not having much desire to have children. Which are both good reasons.
But school was just a nightmare that you couldn’t escape. I liked the last two years or so when I found my people but getting there was excruciating. Putting another person through that just seems cruel.

I managed to care for Lisa today with a lot of kindness and caring. I ate two bowls of stew and a salad. I had a third of my normal amount of water. And I ran six miles in the morning fog.
I did ok.
I love people and it breaks me that so many people only hate. But I will continue to lead the best life I can. I will put one foot in front of the other.

This last month I just kept seeing people talk about punishing the Dems for their genocide. That it would force reform. That people weren’t going to vote for genocide.
And I was just amazed that people still had that sort of faith in our institutions. I don’t know if we will ever have another opportunity to vote.
They are literal fascists. They have their plan. They have the people to do the plan. The courts are wholly captured.
God help us all
