The Liberals are determined to turn Canada into a surveillance state and share data with other "eyes" countries including the USA. This government is not looking to protect Canadians. And they haven't taken the objections on board, as evidenced by their statements that they need to "define" encryption, and that "the new amendments will aim to align the bill's encryption provisions with US counterparts." How can you look at all the history of the USA spying on its own citizens and think "Yep, Canada should copy that"? Not a government that's serving Canadians.

>"The claim that WhatsApp can access people's encrypted communications is patently false," Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said. He added that the bureau had already "disavowed this purported investigation, calling its own employee's allegations unsubstantiated."
I can't help but notice that in response to people's concern that *Meta* may be able to read people's messages, the Meta spokesperson responds that *WhatsApp* can't read them. A little bit of administrative juggling on Meta's end so that the team with access to the messages doesn't fall within the WhatsApp department, and both claims could be true.

>Of course, this is not only about Ubuntu, Fedora, or Linux Mint, as it would apply to all GNU/Linux distributions, desktop environments, and application hubs lke Flathub or Snap Store, which will have to comply with the upcoming law in the near future in some way, especially since similar laws have already been proposed in other US states, including New York and Colorado.

> Donald Trump said Friday his administration will take action on Greenland “whether they like it or not,” further escalating his rhetoric as he pushes to acquire the Danish territory for the U.S.
>
> The comments came during a meeting with oil executives to discuss the prospect of doing business in Venezuela. Less than a week earlier, the U.S. military invaded the oil-rich South American nation and captured its leader, Nicolás Maduro.
>
> Denmark and its European allies in NATO – the military alliance co-founded by the U.S. – have pushed back, reiterating that Greenland is not for sale. But the Trump administration nevertheless says it is currently weighing a range of options on Greenland, including utilizing the U.S. military or cutting a deal to purchase it from Denmark.

> >Jim Beam is halting whiskey production at its historic Clermont, Kentucky, facility for most of 2026 in a major pullback that shows just how badly the bourbon business has soured. The distillery, which opened in 1935, will keep bottling what it has already made and let existing barrels age, but it won’t be producing any new bourbon, marking a complete reversal for an industry that bet big on continued growth. Export sales have tanked as a result of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, with Canadian purchases falling by as much as 85 percent during recent trade fights.

It still astonishes me that a country with 340 million people can pick this guy to be its leader and public face.

The concern about using Chromium-based browsers is just that, if they become utterly dominant, Google gains de facto control of all web standards.

There are more privacy-respecting forks of Firefox. Might be time to move to one of those. [Librewolf](https://librewolf.net/) springs to mind.
But they are dependent on the continued existence of Firefox, so it's still concerning when Mozilla alienates their users.

In Trump's America you'll be guilty if he says so until executed. There will be no opportunity to prove innocence.

Why should undocumented people die for a crime while documented people shouldn't? It's the same crime. What possible argument is there for this except "It's cheaper just to kill them, and we don't give a fuck"? Effectively it's execution for not having your papers in order.
Also, won't this be used as the start of an excuse to kill whichever undocumented person they round up? And then to kill them in bulk, and then to kill the other people they decide to round up? There's no reason whatsoever to trust this administration. They don't believe in justice or laws.
The USA needs to find a way to get rid of these Nazis fast, or it'll be too late to mount any effective resistance.

>At the current rate of horrible fiery deaths, FuelArc projects the Cybertruck will have 14.52 fatalities per 100,000 units — far eclipsing the Pinto's 0.85. (In absolute terms, FuelArc found, 27 Pinto drivers died in fires, while five Cybertruck drivers have suffered the same fate, at least so far.)

To do it based on intent would create some difficult grey areas - for example, video game creators would have to try to make their games as compelling as possible without passing a more or less vague threshold and breaking the law. The second approach of working on the ways different types of data can be used sounds more promising.

How would you identify the kinds of algorithms that should be banned, as opposed to all the other kinds of algorithms? I have a feeling that would be tricky.
