One would think musicians would not use AI to generate album covers or authors to generate book covers, visual artists would not use AI to generate music, etc. and yet these things happen. The gesture of not doing to others what we don't want done to ourselves requires a level of solidarity that not everyone has, unfortunately.

a while ago the Netherlands government started training hairdressers in detecting signs of domestic abuse and pointing victims towards support, for a similar reason

All this self-host techie discourse sounds, to me, a bit like a self-sufficiency dystopia. If we were discussing how bad public transportation is, and someone replied "just transport yourself", most of us would say "that's not it". But when we discuss wanting to get out of large American tech or of nazi-sympathyzing companies, the solution can't be "just host your services yourself". Having to do everything yourself is not my idea of a functioning society.

I used to be quite active on that one bird social network until that one guy purchased it, and then I removed myself from it. From those days, I remember learning a lot from many other folks, many of them in a different field: economists, sociologists, environmental scientists, statisticians, humanities scholars, etc. but also from policymakers, people who were in tech or in many other industries.
I am opening this account with the hope of recapturing that experience. #introduction

My name is Anna and I am an academic studying different topics around sustainability and social responsibility. In recent projects I have focused on labor issues, on the circular economy, on consumer behavior, and on how DEI spreads along supply chains, but I am interested in infinitely many other topics. Methods-wise I use mostly econometrics, with occasional experiments and (recently) analytical modeling. I teach mostly MBAs and some ExecEd. #introduction
