Project management doesn't need to be complicated. Kan is a new open-source alternative to Trello that goes back to basics: minimalist, fast, and entirely under your control.
It features everything you need to organize work—lists, labels, comments, and activity logs—without the enterprise bloat. It even includes a direct Trello import to make migrating painless.
Run it now on PikaPods: https://pikapods.com/pods?run=kan #opensource #selfhosted

The single biggest myth about self-hosting is that people think that you need to set up a homelab.
Yes, that can be done but you can also self-host on a cloud server as well.
That's what we do. We make deploying self-hosted software a piece of cake.

Codeberg members have voted 358-144 to ban AI-generated projects and formally prohibit using platform code to train AI models.
The open-source forge cited severe server strain from AI crawlers and rising hardware costs. It's a clear example of a community-run project drawing hard boundaries to protect volunteer resources.

Samsung Health has introduced a new ultimatum for its users: consent to having your sleep, medication, medical records, and cycle data used for AI training, or lose your synced data entirely.
When you don't control the server, you don't make the rules. Open-source health and fitness trackers give you an alternative where your most sensitive metrics stay private.

What's that one thing that most people get wrong about self-hosting?

Trusting a third party with your passwords requires blind faith. The official Bitwarden server is great but resource-heavy to run.
Vaultwarden is a lightweight Rust implementation that works flawlessly with all official Bitwarden clients. You get the exact same app experience, but your vault stays strictly under your control.
Run your own private password manager starting at $1.20/mo.

Microsoft 365 Business starts at $6/user/month. Nextcloud on PikaPods? $5.50/mo total.
You get a full private cloud suite: docs, team chat, email, calendar, and file storage. The big difference is you actually own your data, and you aren't paying per-seat licenses just to collaborate with your team. ☁️🔒

Microsoft plans to convert Office 2019 and 2021 for Mac to view-only mode on July 13, 2026. This contradicts earlier assurances that these "perpetual" apps would continue to function after end-of-support.
If a company can remotely revoke your license, you don't truly own the software. Open-source alternatives guarantee you won't be locked out of your own documents.

The Dutch government has soft-launched code.overheid.nl, a government-wide open-source code platform built on Forgejo. 🇳🇱
This is a massive win for digital sovereignty, proving that large public institutions can successfully deploy sovereign infrastructure and move away from proprietary GitHub or GitLab lock-in.

Substack takes a 10% cut of every paid subscription — on top of Stripe's fees. The more you earn, the more they take.
Ghost is a polished open-source alternative with built-in newsletters, memberships, and paywalled content. Zero % revenue share, ever.
On PikaPods, it starts at $2.60/mo and your subscriber list stays yours. 📝

A Microsoft account bug recently locked a user out of Notepad. When basic local utilities require a cloud login, the "PC" starts to feel less like a personal computer and more like a rented terminal.
Open-source tools offer a path back to digital sovereignty. Fundamental software shouldn't have a kill switch controlled by a third party.

The pattern is unmistakable:
Reddit killed third-party apps with API pricing.
Twitter gutted developer access.
Meta continues tightening platform control.
Big Tech's endgame isn't serving users—it's controlling them.
The antidote?
💡 Own your data
🛠️ Own your infrastructure
🌐 Own your digital future
Open source isn't just about free software anymore. It's about digital independence in an era of corporate digital feudalism.
