It is interesting to me how on the one hand, SV is moving towards making everything a CLI and having a (root) shell with a mutable, long-lived OS available to literally every type of application so that agents can use them, while in the pre-agents Linux world the currently hot thing to do is to remove the shell and all mutability completely.

TIL that passkeys have remote attestation built-in. Without a US-American phone running software signed by a US-American company, on which you need to be signed in with your legal identity (thus rendering you unable to use it if you're sanctioned by the US), there is a pretty good chance that you'll be unable to use your passkeys in the future. That seems pretty damn terrible.
Don't use passkeys.

Reminder that fedi is an echo chamber in general, but it's an echo camber _especially_ when it comes to LLMs. Go to literally any IRL tech-related community, any other social media platform or heck, just talk to your relatives and friends IRL. The thoughts and opinions on this site, esp. on this topic, do not in any way reflect a majority opinion.

Linux 7.2 finally gained the first few bits to get NAN to work, which should allow for some cool stuff like QuickShare/Airdrop transfers from Linux to Android/iOS 👀
I kind of want to try hacking on that ...

You can't sign a rental contract because eIDAS requires "mobile device security validation systems" and that's the only remaining way to sign documents, and once again the server uses attestation.
The server can be OSS, the app can be OSS, this kind of system could even use open protocols (e.g. OIDC) but because it requires remote attestation it is cryptographically impossible to use and participate in society with on any device that you, the owner, have the keys to.
This must be stopped.

2026-05-29 08:20:30 UTC

- reply

You can't view social media posts because your mandatory eID app for age verification attests your OS image against an allowlist of certs the govt controls, a gate that you can't ever pass. You can't text your friends because WhatsApp requires SafetyNet to "keep bots out". You can't call your doctor because SIM cards don't exist anymore and the eSIM app won't work if you unlock the bootloader, and attests that server-side before unlocking the eSIM.

There is a real chance that in 5-10 years, there will be laptops and smartphones running open processors and operating systems with UX and and an OS comparable or better than the proprietary equivalent, but which are effectively useless to the average consumer because it is cryptographically impossible to use them for anything due to remote attestation proliferating more and more

2026-05-29 07:55:25 UTC

https://github.com/robinostlund/homeassistant-volkswagencarnet/issues/967
There needs to be a law that makes remote attestation - no matter who provides the root certificates, Google/Apple/GrapheneOS - illegal. There is only one use for this technology right now, and it is to prevent people from doing what they want to do with the devices they own, while also making interoperability cryptographically impossible. This is anti-competitive and should simply be illegal.

Sure, we can have relationships with objects like dolls and souvenirs, but much like sending tokens to an LLM that's a one-way street. With a sentient being I feel like it's just categorically different because they are actually able to have thoughts about you too.

The next steps these people will push for is a system where everyone's ID name will need to be visible and used on the internet, everywhere, or the platform itself will need to assume liability - there are already countries out there today with laws like this, it's not unprecedented. And it doesn't just suck for trans people - this will also make it so that every single time you sign up for a service, your full legal identity will be a) recorded and can b) be used to deny you said service

2026-03-09 16:40:33 UTC

> could end up being used on LGBTQ+ and reproductive health content
It already _is_ being used this way. Try using LinkedIn as a trans person _today_ if you can't legally change your name (the reality for the vast majority of trans people worldwide). You can't verify your account without putting your deadname on there for everyone to see, so depending on your job field it's already "have a job and be deadnamed" or "don't have a job and use your name"

Pro tip for anyone doing tech support on old computers this time of year: If a laptop can only do legacy/"BIOS" boot, but you want to install a UEFI-based on OS on it, Clover (https://github.com/CloverHackyColor/CloverBootloader/releases/tag/5165) can do that for you! Just burn a CD (USB sticks don't seem to work!) with Clover, put that as your first boot option, and keep the CD in there, then install your OS of choice like you usually do. Works perfectly on the late 2000s laptops I've tried it out on so far!

Some updates on the #Framework situation. I'm glad that they are being explicit about these kinds of things. Probably still shouldn't give money to someone like DHH or boost them (which, yk, if you're in support of queer people and immigrants, why pay people that want no immigrants or queer people to exist?). That being said, this seems honest and tracks with Framework's history before the whole DHH stuff IMHO.
