The Catholic families today face profound disturbance due to the spread of ideals that strictly confine women to the home as mothers and wives, a pattern largely imported from groups like American Mormons and propagated by influencers such as Letícia Cazarré and Samia Marsili. The fundamental critique, based on Catholic doctrine, is that this narrow vision neglects the full vocation of women, who are created in the image and likeness of God and called to diverse vocations in the Church and society. Reducing women merely to domestic roles creates harmful anxiety for those who do not conform and reflects a poor pastoral approach lacking in the richness of God’s calls.
This rigid idealism has caused a "disease of the soul" within many families by imposing an impossible standard and disregarding the freedom and diversity of vocations the Gospel offers. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Vatican II documents such as Gaudium et Spes, the family is the privileged community called to express love and mutual cooperation. The roles of spouses and parents are framed in mutual charity and fidelity, while women also find their dignity and mission beyond domestic confines, as illustrated by saints such as Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint Catherine of Siena.
The influence of Mormon ideals, which often emphasize a strict patriarchal family model, must be discerned critically, especially since Catholic teaching highlights the complementary and multifaceted mission of women and men. Saints and documents like “Mulieris Dignitatem” and “Familiaris Consortio” show that women's vocations vary, and their service is not limited to homemaking but also includes apostolic and social roles. Proper Catholic formation encourages families to reject fear-driven conformity, embrace founding documents of the Church, and foster vocations lived in freedom and grace.
In essence, the crisis in Catholic families caused by imported rigid female roles can only be resolved by recovering the authentic Church doctrine, which respects various vocations and combats anxiety arising from the limitation of women's roles. The true path for families is in love, freedom in Christ, and a matured faith, drawing on saints and magisterial texts that reveal the Church’s deeper vision of the family and womanhood — far from narrowing one’s identity to domesticity and fear, but inviting the fullness of life in God’s design .
