Almost the end of October, and this is the only color I can find on my street. 🍂🍁

There's a shortcut I often use to get to a major thoroughfare, and it has an intersection which is a two way stop. Drivers are confused by it, and don't understand that only two sides have a stop sign, across from each other. It has gotten so bad that they had to add a sign below the stop sign: "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop." (I want to write an addendum: They don't have a stop sign, but YOU DO.)
I'm not sure a traffic circle would be any better. I wish they would just make it a four way stop. I wonder how well self-driving cars would do in this situation?

Repeating this to myself:
Sometimes we feel confused because it seems like *everyone* loves something, and we cannot, for the life of us, understand the appeal.
It feels weird, even unsettling. But you know what? It's actually okay. No need to go on about it or anything; just rest in the quiet assurance that you are self-contained enough that you are comfortable with not going along with the crowd.
It's okay to be the outlier.
Hi. I'm Kim. I'm the outlier.

Who wants to explain to us non-tech folks what the whole php vulnerability means for us? We keep hearing that this affects 60 to 70% of the internet. Okay. But, like what exactly? Are we talking websites, applications? Can you give examples? And what are users supposed to be doing about it? Pretend I materialized here from 1990.

WAR, a graphic novel created by Eoin Colfer, Andrew Donkin, and Giovanni Rigano, has a focused message, beginning with the quotation:
"Every war is a war against children." ~Eglantyne Jeb
Now, just so you don't worry, this is a fairly tame rendering of war. It does a great job describing the psychological and emotional effects on children, but it tiptoes past other elements. (It actually feels more terrifying by omission.) There are things even worse than death, but the story doesn't go there.
I was quite moved by the story, and emotionally affected, even more than I anticipated. I could not help but think of all the people for whom this is their world, right now. Safe in our homes, we cannot truly imagine what it would be like to be a refugee of war, not really, unless we'd already experienced it. The book does a great job of expressing that, by contrasting the demeanor of those who got out of the war zone, and those who didn't. It was like they were on different planets.
A worthwhile read. #books #bookstodon #GraphicNovel

SPOKE, by Kat Leyh, is a graphic novel set 100 years after societal collapse. It's cozy, but almost too cozy. I generally like a little more danger or conflict in stories about the future, but it is a very kind and sweet story of community and cooperation: a kind of post-apocalyptic new world utopia. Perfect for fans of Becky Chambers.
4 out of 5 stars for accomplishing exactly what it set out to do. It's like the antidote for the bleakness of Octavia Butler's THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER.

Listening to chatter at the vet and there are several who say that after this pet, they won't adopt again. It's too expensive. I feel the same way. What will happen if enough people stop adopting pets, though? It used to be affordable: vaccines and flea meds. That's really all you needed to take care of. Even dog food was way less expensive back in the day.
I don't know the solution here. People like the companionship. But, it's increasingly unaffordable.

Shopping for a new mattress, and I know everyone likes the new styles, but Heaven Forbid you have an heirloom antique bed.
Almost every mattress now is designed for the newer bed foundations, and they are incompatible with the older ones. So, did everyone get rid of their antique brass, or carved wood, bed frames? That seems a shame.

STYX: THE RIVER, by Nikita Gill. First and foremost, this is a novel in verse, which is a tricky format to pull off well. The author does a decent job with this reimagined Greek myth of the war between the Titans and the Olympians. 4 out of 5 ⭐️.
This is part of a series of related books, but each can be read as a standalone. The events of STYX: THE RIVER occur before the story of HEKATE, so I would read them in that order. I believe the third in the series, NYX will come out in late 2027.

Well, there it is. Isaias is now a cat 3, a major hurricane, with wind speeds of 120mph (193 km per hour). Barometric pressure: 959mb.
Expected storm surge tonight: 7 ft. Expected rainfall on the coast: 15 inches. Other areas: 4 to 8 inches. Approximate windfield for tropical storm force winds: 125 miles wide, especially impacting areas to the right of the hurricane as it moves inland.
Too many people are riding this out in places like Destin. Flooding will be the # 1 disaster impact.

Most people describe a good book as one "you can't put down." And, often, that's the case: riveting engagement.
But, hear me out: sometimes a really good book is so impactful, or grabs you so hard, you actually do need to put it down, and come back to it later. Those are the truly rare ones.

You wouldn't think you'd have fun at an infusion center. But, today's group was so animated, we checked to see if we would see each other again next month so we could do this again.
We had the best time, even the lady who was there for a six hour infusion. At one point, one patient gave another an on the spot job interview for part-time work, while the rest of us told raucous stories. Even the nurse contributed. The six hour infusion patient received a call from the doctor's office while she was actually in the building, which we found hilarous. Then someone had mentioned how nurses have seen plenty of penises and are inured to nudity, and the one man among us said that now his phone was pulling up only pictures of penises! Also, he had to pee.
It was a bonkers infusion party. The camaraderie almost made us forget why we were there.

If you have a Goodreads account, you can really help out an indie author by adding their book to your "Want to Read" shelf. It garners attention, and allows a wider readership to consider the book, or at the very least, to have heard of it.

Medical care rant, using a personal example many of you have already heard me talk about before. Also, mention of death:
My cousin is back in the hospital. She was there the first time, because she kept fainting. They said it was because of an electrolyte imbalance. I thought it might be more than that.
The hospital released her after two days, but she didn't feel any better at all, even with a proper hydration plan. So, now she's back in the hospital, and they casually tell her she has Afib, which can be managed, of course, but it's frustrating to have it be essentially your responsibility to figure out what you want the doctor to look for.
I had to do this myself. I diagnosed myself with gallbladder dysfunction. They sent me for an ultrasound:
Them: "It looks fine."
Me: "Yeah, but I'm not fine. I can't eat anything without creating a big pain attack. I want a HIDA scan."
Sure enough, my gallbladder function was actually at zero percent. (Under 22% necessitates removal.) So, we set up the surgery.
But, why did I have to figure it out myself?!?
My cousin and his wife took their youngest daughter to the doctor over and over again for a full year. She had terrible headaches. It was only after she developed palsy on one side of her face that they finally found her brain tumor. (I bet they initially did a simple scan, when she needed a PET scan.) She suffered unnecessarily before they finally got treatment, which was too late, and nothing would have saved her, but still, it bothers me that it took so long for them to find it.
We pay more for Healthcare than any other country in the world, but somehow the care is not matching up with the luxury cost of it.

I saw a sign for a new laundromat today, saying that they accept Apple Pay. I had a lot of mixed emotions about that. It makes great sense, and the grocery stores are really behind in terms of not accepting that form of payment, yet. And sure, our young folks are likely to be renting an apartrment with friends, at a place with no hookups for washers or dryers and maybe only a tiny laundry room for the whole complex. But, this isn't just about young people who are just entering the workforce.
I think the fact that a new laundromat opened up just two miles away from another one, is an economic indicator, and a further push away from ownership and towards a rent and subscription-based model for every aspect of life. People cannot afford to buy a washer and dryer even if they could hook them up. They can't afford the ridiculous prices for homes which can easily cost over five times their annual salary. Rent is unaffordable without roommates. Even a used car is an extraordinary expense.
How far away are we from feudalism?

Yesterday, I did an inventory, purge, reorganization, and prioritization, of all my print and digital books, updating what I own, to prevent duplicates.
When I bring in new books, it's a good idea to see if there are books that are taking up valuable shelf space, that I didn't even enjoy, and should therefore be donated.
I put all the nonfiction in the living room bookcases, where J can see them. She's already got her eye on them.
I went through my entire unmanageable TBR list, and separated out a good number with a "Priority TBR" tag. That way, when I finish library books, I can immediately choose from that list, so they don't just languish there, like Sleeping Beauty. I think it's a solid plan. We shall see! 💃📚❤️

Very productive visit to the big book sale today! Met some interesting people, and made off with a variety of good finds: 2 manga, 1 vintage book, 1 new release, and the rest a mix of hard and softcover. I'll share pics later on.
Most surprising find: the original Warren Report, published by the Associated Press. (They published an updated one later.) The cover is damaged, but the interior is clean. It has that old newspaper-style print, like someone pounded it all out on an old Remington manual typewriter. I half expected the pages to smell like unfiltered cigarettes and stale coffee. I was amazed that no one had gotten to this book before I did.

I don't need to tell you that things are stressful, all over the world, and no one is exempt. For quite a while, I could not connect to any kind of exit from it, other than keeping busy and watching streaming content.
Then, my love of reading finally came back, like someone throwing you a life preserved and hauling you in the boat, after you've been alternating between treading water and dead man's float* for hours and hours in the cold water and you can't feel your legs anymore.
That's my "something" the thing keeping me from tearing my hair out, and running naked, screaming, right down Main Street.
What I'm saying here is that you've got to find your "something." Maybe it's taking the kids or the dogs to the park. Maybe it's listening to music, especially the music you loved way back when. Maybe it's creating something with fabric, paint, woodwork, clay, or writing. This world will try to consume us. That "something" you have is your shell of protection so the world doesn't eat you alive.
*this is a real technique that can save your life. The Red Cross teaches it in a drownproofing course that I had to take to get certified in canoeing when I was twelve.

Okay, so I still have a belly, as most women my age do, HOWEVER, just for fun, I tried on my '90s Lee Rider "relaxed fit" size 10 blue jeans, and they fit! Holy Hell. I wouldn't say that it was necessarily a "comfortable all day" fit, but I *could* wear them. I didn't think I'd ever be able to wear them again. Almost donated them. This means those Cello jeans in crazy colors from Lizard Thicket are also a possibility. I don't think that brand is even around today.
Do I miss pancakes, waffles, cereal, pizza, chicken wings, chips, French fries, nachos, bacon, sausage, desserts, and BREAD, HELLS YEAH I do. But, this shot is so expensive, and I just can't see sabotaging any progress. Plus, protein bars and light ice cream brands have come a long way.
Anyway, thank you for reading this. I wanted to share a little win. 😃 And for other GLP-1 users: keep up the good fight.

Edited to add: And of course, the City is here to switch out our old electricity meter for a new one. The more the merrier!

Me: In the garage freezer.

Unbelievable!!! I just got another jury summons. I've lost count, but I think this is the seventeenth time, since 1994. I've served on two juries in Superior Court (which is criminal court vs. State Court). At age 70, I won't have to do it anymore.

I wish journalists would ask many questions that they don't. One is: "When was the last time any oil company failed to make a profit?" Follow-up: Then why are we subsidizing them?"
It pains me to think that we, the citizens of a country disproportionately responsible for the Climate Crisis, are paying them to accelerate it.

Are Y'all following the news about dangerously low water levels in rivers and lakes around the world? The U.N. calls this freshwater crisis "global water bankruptcy."
https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/01/1166800
An old nazi warship was visible and had to be hauled out of the Danube, a river cruise ship ran aground, there are extremely low levels in reservoirs in places like Colorado and Wyoming, Lake Mead giving up secrets we don't want to know. The Rhine and especially the very low Danube provide critical resources for transportation and cooling for power plants. Water reservoirs in Spain are down to only 71% full. In France, loss of groundwater is making some soils unstable. The Dutch have declared level 2 restrictions.
Officials in Italy are trying to reassure (gaslight?) residents and tourists that the levels in Lake Garda are just fine. The Greeks are alarmed to see that Lake Mornos has lost HALF of its capacity over the past four years. It could rain every day and you'd never catch up. Australia is in a full-on water crisis. Water flows from rivers into Perth’s dams has fallen by over 80%. China and 75% of Asian countries are experiencing a severe water crisis. Not only is most of the region water insecure, but also there is a contamination problem from upstream construction dams in rivers like the vital Mekong, the third longest river in East and Southeast Asia, which is at its lowest level in 100 years. 1 out of three people on the largest continent: Africa, lack access to just basic clean drinking water. South America's biggest cities are facing severe strain on their water resources. Same in Central America and the Carribean. Some wise guy will suggest we just build a bunch of desalination plants, not realizing the devastating damage to our soil, air, waterways, and ecosystem.
Everyone depends on (disappearing) snowpack to melt into rivers, lakes and streams. For years, we've been saying that there's too much water use, that these bodies of water cannot meet the demand. And now we have these data centers wasting more water and electricity than whole towns.
Even with all the extra rain we've had, Lake Lanier* is still five feet below full pool. That's not much at all for a lake over 1k feet deep, but it is significant to me that if it is not at full pool, even with extra precipitation, what will happen if we get less rain than we need? As in other places, we depend on lakes and rivers for drinking water.
At least the Great Lakes are very deep and pretty much drought-resistant. Lake Louise and associated rivers and streams were at near flood stage earlier in July, not sure about now. I hope Canada has had better snowpack than most places.
Whoever controls access to critical freshwater resources will have the most power. Wars will be fought over this.
*If you really wanna know why Lake Lanier is for real haunted, and why so many swimmers die there, look up the town of Oscarville.

#heatwave The U.K.has recorded 2,877 excess deaths, and in France, that number has reached over 5,700. Yet, you'll still hear people insist that "It gets hot every summer." I hope there are very few Climate Crisis holdouts at this point.
Europe is heading into its fourth major heatwave since May. Extreme 100°F + heat is going to last a week in California, for only the fifth time in 85 years. The U.S. keeps building heat domes that park over millions and don't budge for days.
The fires in France and Spain serm to be slowing, hopefully in Canada, too. But, there are too many fires all over the place. Crete has been in the bullseye of late.
And I don't want to hear about the Clooneys having to evacuate their French villa. The stories of ordinary people are what matter to me, like those three Greek firefighters who lost their lives battling blazes.

This is very niche, but I am crying with frustration over my @#$%&* RA getting to the point where I now drop things every day, and spill drinks too often. I hate HATE the idea of an adult sippy cups "for the elderly" but I'm also tired of the clean-up.
Is there a brand, you or your parents, or grandparents use that doesn't look like you brought it home from the hospital? I'm looking for something as spill proof as possible, lightweight and easy to grip and hold, with handles, where every part is top rack dishwasher safe.

I just won a book giveaway for a copy of Absalom Absalom! by Faulkner, published in 1936. I have never read it. We were assigned The Sound and the Fury in 10th grade English, but I think I will like this one better. (I couldn't get through As I Lay Dying.)
Anyway, some of you know that my mom's first career was as a high school English teacher, and Faulkner is her all-time favorite author. So, I'll be reading it in honor of her, and of the part of her life she remembers more clearly than any other, because it was the time her work made her happiest. Even in the midst of her cloudy dementia, she will ask me to do things for her students.

I love the non-standard disclaimer that I just happen to notice on the copyright page of Tom's Crossing, by Mark Z. Danielewski:
"This abridgment is a work of fiction. And because it is shattered, scattered, recollected, and rearranged, and at times uniquely devised, and because fiction's province is the imagination and thus concerned with the argument of empathy over representation, any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events, or locales, no matter how familiar, should be considered coincidences born out of the reader's keen and original mind."
