I am migrating to Mastadon thanks to the self-destruction of commercial social media sites. I am an experimental writer, poetry but mostly prose, an essayist, voracious reader and political junkie. I'm rapidly approaching retirement age, but continue to kick against the pricks.

Cop meetings have proven to be greenwashing conferences that legitimise countries’ failures to ensure a livable world and future and have also allowed authoritarian regimes like Azerbaijan and the two previous hosts – the United Arab Emirates and Egypt – to continue violating human rights.

'Fueled by gusts of up to 80mph, the fire spewed flames and embers up to 2.5 miles out, making it difficult and dangerous to fight. Every firefighting resource in the area has been thrown at the fire, according to Ventura county fire chief Dustin Gardner, who added that is is “still moving at a dangerous rate of spread”. By Wednesday evening, the fire remained at 0% containment.'

“In the old days we used to understand the river’s rise and fall … But lately man has started to affect nature to such an extent that we no longer know how things work. Even the animals can feel the change,” added Santos, 42. An Amazon catfish called the “bodó” used to lay its eggs in January. Now locals said it was happening as early as October. “Everything has spun out of control.” #amazon #drought #brazil #climatechange #environment #wildfires https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/sep/28/brazils-paradise-on-fire-the-forest-is-burning-animals-are-burning-trees-are-burning-everythings-burning

'One scientific paper looked at 1,500 fires in western US states over 30 years and found that protected forests with higher levels of dense growth actually had lower fire severity than intensively managed areas of commercial logging. Another found that plantations planted after logging “were significant drivers of wildfire severity”. Another found that clearcutting was a key factor leading to “frequent, high-severity fire”.' #indigenous #environment #climatechange #BC https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/sep/23/canada-first-nation-forest-wildfire-logging
