From “Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet” by Thich Nhat Hanh
“There is a Zen story about a man on a horse galloping very quickly. At the crossroads a friend of his shouted, “Where are you going?” And the man replied, “I don’t know. Ask the horse!” And that is the situation of humanity right now: in our times that horse is technology. It is carrying us off and it’s out of control.”

I agree with your sentiment but not necessarily with the facts. For example, we don’t have the technology to make cement without using fossil fuels. Same for metals needed for electrification. All our large machinery runs on diesel fuels and there is no technology to electrify them.
We do have the technology to do better than we currently are but it is not clear if that will be good enough.

McGovern’s “99th Day” is a devastating book. It convincingly makes the point that our technology is killing the Earth’s ability to support life. Expecting the “Green Revolution” to save us is a fools mistake. It “may” reduce CO2 emissions but only at the cost poisioning our environment and rapidly using up non-renewable resources. We will not survive on that path.

Not to mention that higher GDP growth is not necessarily a good thing. To solve our polycrisis we need degrowth of the economy. Growth strains our planetary boundaries just that much more.

The 1.5°C Narrative is "Hogwash": He directly challenged the common narrative that warming can be limited to 1.5°C via net-zero emissions by 2050, calling it "hogwash". He argues the real world is closer to the IPCC's high-emissions scenario (RCP 8.5) and that global warming will exceed 2°C.
To achieve a stable climate, Dr. Hansen stated that humanity must reduce carbon intensity to near zero by mid-century.

Comments by James Hansen:
Global warming is accelerating. The causes include increasing greenhouse gases coupled with a reduction in particulate air pollution, particularly from East Asia and ships at sea.
1.5°C Threshold Passed: Based on satellite data showing the Earth is strongly out of energy balance, he concludes, "We do not need to wait 10 years to conclude that we have reached 1.5 degrees global warming". (1/2)

This is not quite the win that you make it out to be. “Cheap” renewables come at the expense of immense environmental destruction in the Global South and in other underdeveloped areas. This is not the solution. We need to significantly reduce consumption and use of energy. Without that I believe this will all be in vain.

I consider myself a “doomer” in the sense that I consider a severe collapse of our society is almost inevitable. However, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t act. Anything we can do to reduce warming by even 0.1° will reduce suffering and be well worth it.

These data are “ground truth”. I don’t really care if people say US (or EU or China) emissions have dropped. There is so much room for fudging the data that I don’t trust that assessment. However CO2 ppm readings at a site like Mauna Loa can’t be manipulated. Until they are decreasing we are not doing our job.

“Almost no one understand the basic equation: figure out how to live comfortably off the land you occupy and you’ve “solved” de growth”
That is an excellent point. We live beyond our means, where “means” refers to our local area.

Are there cases when this doesn’t work?

I agree that is one way. The other is to let societal collapse happen and rebuild in a more reasonable fashion.
I’m hoping there is a third way that is not so harsh, but I haven’t seen anyone present it yet.

Although I’m a fan of Degrowth, I’ve yet to hear a realistic plan for how to implement it. It is nothing less than a complete overhaul of our social and economic systems. Expect a lot of push back.
