😵 Is my laptop doomed from running too many coding agents at a time, or are there things I can do to improve the performance? Is it a matter of "just buy a better machine" kind of solution?

I got waitlisted for the Python core devs sprint due to limited space. No worries, it means now I'm likely available to attend either SeaGL or PyBeach, so I just submitted talks for both conferences.

I was at a local social gathering with other immigrant women.
We exchanged stories like:
- finding out the men hired for the same job got offered 20K more
- being told by the boss to withdraw a job application because he wasn't gonna make a woman as a director
- hearing inappropriate comment during job interview about our racial identity and country of origin
Sometimes I wonder if other groups share these kinds of stories as well or just in our group.

My first ever conference talk was in 2016 at DjangoCon US.
In the year 2026, and I'll celebrating 10 years of public speaking, and therefore 10 years of Ice Cream Selfies 😎
Some events where I'll be speaking in the year 2026 are:
- PyCascades (Vancouver, BC)
- GW Open Source Conference (Washington, DC)
- LinuxFest NW (Bellingham, WA)
- PyCon US 2026 (Long Beach, CA)
See you at any of these events!

My new rice cooker beeps when it finished cooking. It was one of the features I've been wanting (to be notified that the rice is ready) but it beeps like 5 times and super loud, even louder than my own wake up alarm 😅 (and there is no way to adjust the volume).
Oh well maybe one day they'll make it play a song just like the laundry machines these days.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I don't actually want to collect your personal information 😅 You can generate QR code using my site without creating an account!
Anyway, I needed to figure out how to disable account creation on my site using django-allauth. If you have a similar problem, check my blog on how to do it.

⚠️ Pro tips for any Summit presenters at PyCon US 2025: (hatchery, language, maintainer, community organizers, etc)
1. Light mode for your slides
2. Use big fonts
3. Share presentation link to your audience so they can follow along in case your slides are not readable
We're at the Python Language summit and we just made a presenter change their slides from dark mode into light mode, and also Guido had to move his seat to be right in front of the projector in order to read the slides.

#PyConUS 2025 will be a special personal celebration for me, celebrating 10 years since my first ever PyCon and how far I've come since then.
PyCon US 2015 was one of the turning point in my life that sets the path to where I am now.
Part of me just thinks that I'm just the same person all along, but at the same time I know I'm a better version now compared to before.
The conference is gonna be great, and I'm looking forward to be surrounded by the Python community for the next week.

There's a service called "certifier" which is basically sending certificates as a service and it's like $110 a month.

Folks don't understand how open source contributions work. If you want a feature, you don't come and say "make me this feature". Instead, you open a PR and ask for it to get merged.
Folks don't understand how community conferences work. If you want something to happen in the conference, you don't come and say "make this happen for me". Instead, you say "I want to volunteer and do this for your conference".

TIL about the bulk import functionality in django-import-export library.
https://django-import-export.readthedocs.io/en/latest/bulk_import.html
Some caveats:
- set `batch_size` for better performance
- doesn't work with many-to-many relationships
- no `pre_save` and `post_save` signals sent (it' doesn't call `model.save()`)

Next option is to listen to local radio stations.
This is also problematic. The only place in this household that's set up to listen to the radio is inside the car. I don't want to have to install an app just to listen to the radio. Also I haven't listened to any radio for maybe 10 years (never a fan of listening to radio ads) 🤕

School website was down because it couldn't handle the traffic of all the parents trying to find out if school is open today.
No worries, I thought, maybe I could check local news site instead.
But to read the news on the news site I must sign up for an account.
Next choice, checking out the school's social media accounts but they're still on that ex- site ... Urrghh

The new Stardew Valley 1.6 update on Android feels buggy to me. Just me or anyone else experienced it too?
- Can't seem to pick up any Roe/Squid ink from the fish pond while riding the horse. But it works if I dismount

- Energy tonic no longer restores Health (only energy) (ok I learned now that this is intended change in 1.6 😢)

Years ago, in my early days of contributing to Python, I'd seen messages on mailing list that made me feel uncomfortable but I didn't feel brave enough to call it out. I brought it up privately to my mentor, and using his position in the team, he called it out and people apologized.
That's one of the things that stood out for me about mentorship. It's not just about teacher/student kind of thing. It's also moral support, using one's privilege for others who don't have it. (1/)

Q: "When is the mid-autum festival?"
A: "8th month, 15th day".
Q: "When exactly is that?"
A: "Just look it up on internet!"
Here I was confused because in my mind, it sounds like the mid-autum festival is August 15 (today) but turns out they talk in Lunar calendar 😵‍💫
In the Chinese language the months are not named ( no December, January, etc) so it's always never clear to me which calendar are they talking about 😓

I'm trying to set up local dev env for an open source project.
The project's setup instruction is to run some kind of makefile and docker, where it pulls its own custom docker image, but the docker image they have is using linux/amd64, but my machine is linux/arm64.
I checked their docker repo, they only have docker image for that one platform.
So... is there some magic that will let me run this on my machine? 😓

My IDE has the tab to autocomplete feature.
For example, when I type "Abs" it would pop-up a small menu with options of classes and functions that start wth "Abs" like "Abstract", "Absence", "Absolute".
So if I want to choose "Abstract" I could just press tab, and it would type out Abstract for me.
Well now they have AI autocompletion so instead of choosing "Abstract", tabbing would autocomplete with something else kinda random thing.
How do I disable the AI part of this IDE, dear #PyCharm?

If this video doesn't make you want to pack your bags to PyCon US this weekend then I don't know what else will.

Obvious things conference speakers should do:
- submit a talk proposal
- take a photo/selfie
- write up bio
- give the talk
Not obvious things conference speakers should do:
- update email filter so emails from conference organizers don't end up in spam
- when traveling, plan to arrive at Talk day - 2 days, in case of flight cancellations
- show up at least 30 minutes before the talk slot, not 5 minutes before
- use light mode presentation slides (light bg, dark text)
anything else?
