mementomori.social now has over 1000 users! 🎉
When we started, we simply wanted a calm, safe, and tech-friendly space for experimentation, built for people who care about the Fediverse and want social media where users are in control. We began as a 2-person server, but today we have a diverse community from all walks of life, including regular people, companies, associations, authors, non profits, bands, tech startups, useful and fun bots, and political parties.
Thank you to each and every one of you for being here, posting, replying, and keeping this place warm and welcoming. A special thank you goes to our non-profit association members and our sponsor @npub1f5w…2jep who together keep the engine running.
Long live the instance, long live us! Memento mori 💀

Mementomori.social now runs behind Cloudflare proxy 🌏
Some of our users far from Finland, especially in Australia and Asia, have had slower loading times. The reason is often a slower route between their internet provider and Europe. Now your connection goes first to a server near you, and Cloudflare carries it to our servers in Helsinki on its own fast network. Our servers and your data stay at UpCloud in Helsinki as before.
Everything should work as before, just faster for many of you. If you notice anything odd, like errors, login trouble, or posts or notifications not arriving, please let us know immediately at admins@mementomori.social.

Mementomori ry is proudly sponsored by @npub1f5w…2jep 💜
UpCloud powers the servers our whole instance cluster runs on. Our data lives on sovereign European infrastructure, hosted by a European company, and it is seriously fast! ⚡️
Huge thanks to UpCloud for supporting independent, community-run social media. This is what a healthy fediverse needs.

We are live on @npub1f5w…2jep servers! :party_skull:
Tonight, we moved mementomori.social from Hetzner to UpCloud servers in Helsinki. We had scheduled a maintenance window from 17:00 to 20:00, but our instance was down for just under an hour - the last post on the old server went out at 18:30, and the first on the new server went out at 19:30.
Some numbers from the move:
- PostgreSQL upgraded from 14 to 18; database size is 210 GB with about 118.5 million posts, 1.27 million known accounts, and 21.7 million media attachments
- 440041 posts written by our own 990 users
- Search: 34.9 million public posts, 1.24 million accounts, and 4.28 million hashtags indexed
- Data checksums enabled, so silent disk corruption now shows up as an error instead of bad data
- Rebuilt 72 text indexes for the new operating system's collation rules, ensuring ä and ö sort correctly. This also freed up about 20 GB
- Now accessible over IPv6 as well!
Every server is now provisioned with Ansible, and the playbooks are public: https://github.com/mementomori-social/ansibles
If your home timeline looks empty, it will repopulate as you use it. Please let us know if anything seems off.
Huge thanks to @npub1zdf…6u9l and especially @npub17cz…c8xe for putting in countless hours. Thank you @npub1f5w…2jep for sponsoring our non-profit :bunhdheart: Media files remain hosted on Cloudflare R2 as before.
We should now be faster, better, more sustainable, and more sovereign than ever. Party on!

Our initial schedule might have been a bit too optimistic due to our admins' busy schedules.
Current status: PostgreSQL (database) is replicating, and Elasticsearch has been completely moved.
Still in progress: migrating the main web server. The Ansible playbooks are mostly done, but they still need some tweaking and testing.

We are happy to announce that [@upcloud](https://glitchy.upcloud.world/@upcloud ) is now sponsoring our nonprofit and instance. Since we moved to an association and co-managed structure, we no longer run on @npub1zdf…6u9l's personal Hetzner account. We have started migrating to UpCloud's ultra-fast Helsinki servers with newer hardware. This will improve performance, speed, and future-proof our infrastructure.
Below you can see our preliminary migration plan. Most servers can be migrated in the background with no visible changes, but we will schedule extra maintenance windows for things that require attention and downtime. We will give you plenty of notice in advance so you can prepare. You can subscribe to status updates at https://status.mementomori.social
We will share more details about the sponsorship later. UpCloud is a European, sovereign cloud infrastructure provider that offers high-performance cloud servers on an hourly billing basis for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) at https://upcloud.com

On behalf of the board, thank you again for your incredible and heartwarming support. Our sustainability as a nonprofit and as a Mastodon instance is fully secured, with no burden on our admins or users.
Exciting and even bigger things are on the way - we will share the timeline and details at a later date. Here is a hint: thanks to our sponsors, we can optimize things even further. To be continued...

We have a chatroom on Matrix, which is an open source end-to-end encrypted messaging platform. It is federated like Mastodon, with different instances. We do not currently provide an open Matrix instance for others than admins (this might change in the future), but there are plenty of instances to choose from.
The room is invite-only for members, but we can send you an invite link.
Here is how to get in:
1. Create an account on an instance. Here are some options: https://matrix.org/ecosystem/hosting/ or for Finnish speakers: https://www.pikaviestin.fi/
2. Once you have a user account, update your Matrix ID in your profile here: https://members.mementomori.social/matrix
3. Let us know or wait for an invite.
Remember to install Element or Fluffychat on your phone so you have member discussions with you everywhere. See you there!

Nonprofits exist for specific reasons. Usually, they exist to meet social needs and promote the common good, rather than generate financial profit for their owners.
Nonprofit organizations fulfill several important roles in society:
- Addressing market and government failures: The government provides services to the general public or the masses, but it is not always able to address the needs of small, specific groups.
- Market failures: Companies operate where it is possible to make a profit. Nonprofit organizations step in when those in need cannot afford to pay for services.
- Community and support: Helping the disadvantaged: Nonprofits provide food assistance, shelters, and crisis support.
- Peer support: These initiatives bring together people who have similar life experiences.
- Recreational activities: A large number of sports clubs and cultural associations operate on a nonprofit basis to make participating in these activities as affordable as possible.
These are all the very reasons why Mementomori ry exists. Those who have the means to become members can join, but the instance is here for everyone.
We promote open, European, natural, completely tracking-free social media where you own your data.

As a non-profit organization we are committed to being as open and supportive as possible. This means that all the code we write and every technique we use are open source and publicly available. Everything related to our members and the way we run the organization and server is also out in the open.
We are not driven by profit. Our only purpose is to ensure the sustainability of our shared goals, such as keeping the instance up and running, rather than putting them in the hands of one person.
As an instance, we are very open-minded and liberal. We do not align ourselves with any political party. Instead, we base the way we operate on safe-space principles and decent human values. We support open bridges and protocols and we do not tolerate extremism or harm of any kind. Harassing people for not using alt text or for using AI is not acceptable to us. Hate increases hate, so we try to respond with kindness. Mementomori.social's number one rule is: Be kind. That principle also extends to our association.
That being said, in the interest of openness, we do use some GenAI-assisted coding. We refrain ourselves from usin GenAI for art, whether visual or musical, in case we ever need those things.
Our official rulebook states that we encourage and support the ethical social web. To us, this means building in public with open source and supporting an open, non-commercial, user-centered social media, the fediverse.

2026-08-18 07:48:47 UTC

Did you know you can pay your yearly membership fee monthly, which costs just €5 per month?
We are very close to our initial membership goal and pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming support. A warm thank you to everyone so far.

We now have 24 members, and we are happy about the launch so far 🐱 Our goal of making sign up as easy as possible was clearly a success. It takes only a couple of clicks to become a member. There is no bureaucracy, overly complicated manual processing, or paperwork from the board either.
We will continue posting about our nonprofit, and we still have some goals to reach before we are fully self-sufficient. But we will get there, slowly but surely. Perhaps even faster than expected.
Thank you for helping to make our instance sustainable.

Membership sign-up is open and we are already getting great questions from you (might be worth starting a FAQ soon):
Can I register with my social media pseudonym or do I have to use my real name?
You need your legal name. Section 11 of the Finnish Associations Act requires that the membership roster includes each member's full name and place of residence, which means you have to use your official name on the application. This information is only visible to the board and never appears on the public membership list.
There is a separate field for your social media name. On your personal page, you can set a display name, and that is the name that will show to other members if you choose to be listed publicly in the membership roster. If you leave it blank, the name you used when applying for membership will be used instead.

Already decided: you can pay for your membership either monthly (5 €) or annually (60 €).
The current benefits include access to mementomori.social, our Matrix server at chat.mementomori.social, member chats, meeting attendance, and ongoing support from our services. Nothing extra yet - we are just getting started.
The main idea is to get support from members to cover our costs. Maybe we will offer more benefits down the road through member contributions, but we are still new to this.

Our costs are roughly 200 euros per month for a performance optimized, future-proof cluster, and we currently have about 1000 users. Since membership is optional, we do not expect even 10% to join as association members. If we get 40 members, we are covered. Of course, anything is subject to change and we can reconsider the membership fee later, especially if we get more members. Right now we have 3 members, which is us, the board (membership website in progress). @npub185q…wagx
