Wild Thyme as a groundcover, I wonder if it can compete with wild oregano that grows all over my plot. I think the ants spread it.
Wild Thyme Seeds are available in Germany from
a company called Rühlemanns, probably also from Deaflora which has a huge catalogue and very good quality.
https://deaflora.de/Shop/
https://www.kraeuter-und-duftpflanzen.de/pflanzen-saatgut/maca-myrte/majoran-oregano/libanesischer-oregano-babilye-saatgut
Maybe a sources list for specialty seed or plants would be useful to others.
Ordering from overseas can be a pain due crazy regulations.

Za Atar, Lenanese
3 Table spoons crushed Thymian
1,5 Tablespoons Sesame seeds
2,5 Teaspoons Sumach
1, 2 Teaspoon Sea Salt
Generally Origanum syriacum, called Wild Thyme is used. It does not burn as easily as the common variety.
Toast the sesame seeds in a pan, about 5 minutes.
Crush about half of the toasted sesame seeds in a mortar
Add the other ingredients and mix
Shops selling lebanese foods may sell the Wild Thyme.

There are electric tractors, small but effective for their size, but they go through batteries unbelievably fast.
Ever seen the fuel consumption of a John Dear (very) or new Holland tractor, so called Modern agriculture is extremely energy intensive.
Lots and lots of things need to change to get around this.
The local farmer that has highest profits uses a vintage tractor with at most 70 horse power. Much of his produce is sold at the farm, including bread from own grain.

@npub1hxf…l5s2 Along with the high price of diesel fuel -- all those John Deer tractors don't run on solar!
Farming seems to be an area where even China offers only smaller full electric powered multi purpose tractors.
There are very good big electric trucks on Chinese roads, maybe demand is still too low.
Or farmers too poor and conservative.

Rather than solvents Paraffin, lamp oil is useful against gumming, for cleaning gum off parts i often use ethanol.

What is badly needed is a low powered urban electric vehicle, it should fulfill all modern safety standards and side entry lift for a wheelchair user.
Actual driving does not need a steering wheel, joystick or joysticks plus decent self driving capability can suffice in most cases.

Chain Waxing
There are so many opininions and sales pitches on youtube. Pls do not get confused, try it.
I have used a stovetop bath for maybe 10 or more years, very rarely need to replace a chain.
Replacement chains, I use only the plated kind from KMC.
Reason, Plated is not as prone to rusting.
I thread a pice of wire through a chain link, it helps in removing the chain from the wax bath.
Newest trend is, repurpose a hot wax beauty tub.

2026-06-20 08:17:28 UTC

- reply

A waxed Chain lasts thousands of miles, if you renew the waxing often enough, a waxed cassette or sprocket has an extremely long lifetime.
You can filter your wax bath through a tea sieve or similar if any grit or dirt gets in.
The bath is reusable for years, you only replace what is used.
I did not recommend adding PTFE, it is a forever chemical.
Any wax that falls off a hot waxed wiped chain is minimal in comparison to other methods.

Cleaning steel.
Should you use sodium hydroxide, after repeated usage you can neutralise it using vinegar, be careful the reaction can be violent.
Waxing chains is the most environmentally friendly method I know of
Why post 2

2026-06-19 21:00:32 UTC

- reply

Using vinegar, lemon juice on bicycle parts, ouch, both are acids.
Orange oil or Ethanol are way less agressive to metals including plating and far more effective.
Be careful with orange oil on paints, if left on too long it is a good stripper.
If parts are really greasy gunked and steel, not aluminium, hot sodium hydroxide solution is extremely effective. BE CAREFUL, it is dangerous to skin and eyes.
Often sold as expensive oven cleaner

Post 2
I generaly use nickel plated chain, it lasts longer less risk of rust.
A chain waxed in the described manner stays clean, has low friction. repeat times depend on conditions.
On a Mountain bike maybe even once a week could be needed, race bikes maybe every couple of weeks,
I learned the method from Tour de Trance mechanics.
Without grease or oil your chain drive wear will be reduced to a minimum.
Nothing to create an abrasive paste on parts or chain.

2026-06-19 18:32:40 UTC

Lubricating a chain.
Use a quicklink to make chain removal easy.
Remove the chain, if necessary clean de grease and dry it
Sink the chain in a mixture of hot paraffin wax and some molybedenum disulfide.
I dissolve grease in hot wax to get that.
Move the chain around in the hot wax mixture. When no more bubbles come up remove the chain, wipe while hot.
Refit, if you wish you can give sprocket/sprockets them a very thin coat of wax mix diluted in de greaser.

Tried & True Original Wood Finish is a premium blend of linseed oil & beeswax that is polymerized for multi-purpose applications on all interior woodwork. It provides excellent protection against water and liquids.
Same goes for the variant Danish oil.
Excellent protection against water and liquids, only if you dry surfaces fast.
Neither can protect from sunlight and rain over longer periods.
A reasonable explainer about tung.

I'll be using the linseed mixture on the wooden bird feeders once I take them down for the season.
That unfortunately will feed black mold.
Commercial products claiming to be Bio have included biocides, often copper.
Best safe preservative is as far as I am aware Tung Oil
For outer surfaces birch oil should also be ok, it is not as pretty though.

given the growth of car ownership in China, its high level of rail usage may decline (as with more developed economies).
MMM more developed economys, I guess you have never been to China.
Due to Chinas geography rail usage is growing and is likely to continue to do so.
Traveling thousands of miles in a car is tiring and very time consuming in comparison to taking a train.
Prices and comfortable punctual trains make usage more attractive.
cars are often just status symbols.

4.31 Billion Passengers in 2024
Cargo 5.18 billion tonnes, which represents a 2.8-percent rise from the previous year.
48,000 kilometers of high-speed railway lines and some of the safest and fastest trains on the planet.
Major aim is to replace Air travel within China.
The CR450 is part of that, presently trains run at 350KmH over long distances, that will soon be up to 400 in regular service.

Years ago a very nasty extremely right wing person from Leamington Spa said
We are taking over the home office so we can screw any migrant we feel like.
Looking at how that institution treats migrants and citizens I think that move was a full success.
The statements that institution makes are worthy of goebbels which is another pointer.

Will be using this recipe on a Vintage Pfaff professional sewing machine stand.
Have orange essential oil, so the recipe will be slightly sweeter scented :-).
The pro stands have a heavy cast X brace, and larger table than consumer versions.
Top was lacquered, had some dings and a big scorch mark caused by leaving a hot iron on the surface, time for TLC.

Canoe glue, original canoes and Kayaks were of different types, Skin on frame mostly used pins and lashing to secure joints covering was sewn.
Bark canoes were of a pin, sew lash construction.
In skin on frame boats the joints are designed to be flexible, that helps prevent breakage and makes repair easy.
According to Nansen and finds, Eskimo Kayaks used lashing with sinew and wooden or bone pins to secure frames.

I've noticed that my birch logs left outdoors take way longer to decompose than maple ones.
Answer,
Sometimes I find birch trunks are rotted away, only the bark remains and stays usable for many years.

Birch oil and tar is distilled from Birch bark.
Making Oil From Birch Bark
from 07.08.2013
from
Far North Bushcraft And Survival
is fairly good, to thicken the oil it can be boiled, just take care it doesn't catch fire as the lighter fractions evaporate.
I felt sad to see such thick birch bark being used for the process, the climate is mild where I live so finding bark of reasonable thickness is very difficult.
I treasure any pieces I find over 3mm thick with a good surface.

Birch oil and tar is distilled from Birch bark.
For home use and assuming you live in an area where you can get some bark a very simple two can distillation will work.
Have to rush now, will do my best to find a decent description or yt film this evening.
Birch sap is valuable, you can only tap it in springtime, it can be boiled dry for sugar.
Most of the Birch sugar you can buy is adulterated or probably completely fake.
At least one canadian company was caught recently

Nice for inside, on outdoor items Waterglas or birch tar thinned are far better as a preservative.
Water glas will also strengthen aged or even badly rotted wooden items.
Just have some very decorative pieces in that waterglas process, later they will be used in large bowls with ficus pumlla
Without treatment the wood started to mold and rot.

The madness of the UK's energy system
May i politely add, UK has a dangerous doctrine, the least vunerable energy system would be distributed over homes or towns and villages.
A massive powerline and the required step up and step down systems are soft targets for Putin or terrorists.
For anyone who can, solar panels and non mains dependent storage are the sanest options. Only purchase when the weather is really bad. Plan to be able to bridge a 2 or 3 day mains outage

BYD has claimed that the second generation of its Blade Battery can charge from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes, and delivers a driving range of 777 - 1,000+ km. Ten new BYD models will include the new-generation battery with prices from 155,000 yuan (less than 20,000 euros).
BYD Does not make a false claim, If the charger is capable should be added to the comments as should be that much of the EV Charging infrastructure within China is powered by renewables.

You know what WON’T get stuck in the Strait of Hormuz?
Sunlight and solar panels.
Really need battery's and off grid capability whenever possible. Charger +Inverter or a hybrid. No Battery no power in the nighttime or a rainy day.
Problem with systems that need grid synchronization or cloud is you might have full battery's but still sit in darkness due to outages.
100% offgrid also really needs a generator of some kind to bridge longer bad weather periods.

Unless it’s genocide against Palestinians.
How can that be? Easy. Because they don’t see Palestinians as human beings.
Why? Because they are racist fucks.

I'm wondering if there are compounding factors, @npub1hxf…l5s2 . Like folks drinking more alcohol in places other than India.
I think the biggest factor is thinking more is better.
Taking isolated plant constituents in high concentrations without expert knowledge and controls has always been a very risky action.
In India Golden Tea is still usually made with fresh or dried and powdered Tumeric, Ginger and fresh crushed black peppercorns plus other spices.

If drinking freshly made golden tea or using Tumeric as a spice was so dangerous people in India would die in droves.
The danger zone is quickly entered when taking industrially made high concentration supplements.

Mother of pearl decorated sewing machine.
Wow! What a beauty!
Yes, from an era where many machines were works of art as well as being very capable and built to last a lifetime of usage or longer.
The machine is now in unusually good condition, still original except for the winder tire and I will do my best to keep it that way.
A similar machine may still be on offer nearby, I am trying to resist due lack of space but it is very tempting.
MOP decoration is just magical.

2026-02-14 14:59:11 UTC

Sewing, Vintage machine, repair restore.
Post 1
The beautiful machine with Mother of pearl decoration has been testing my patience, first problem was rust, lots of rust on mechanism including inside the head, the shuttle took hours of careful polishing to fix. I wanted to sew, fitted a DBX1 needle, it had to be set very low, needle shank fitting foot. Fix that, thread breaks, dismantle then polish tension disks, fix needle plate damage best I could. That had seen a lot of needle hits.
