"The behaviour of Hongwu, the first of the Ming emperors, is an object lesson in how to stifle the economy: forbid all trade and travel without government permission; force merchants to register an inventory of their goods once a month; order peasants to grow for their own consumption and not for the market; and allow inflation to devalue the paper currency 10,000-fold."

"The word *courage* is very interesting. It comes from a Latin root *cor*, which means 'heart.' So to be courageous means to live with the heart. And weaklings, only weaklings, live with the head; afraid, they create a security of logic around themselves. Fearful, they close every window and door-with theology, concepts, words, theories-and inside those closed doors and windows, they hide."

same with money.
some people come of age during a deep depression or excessive inflation, others during a raging bull market or generational prosperity and cheap gas, and each grows older thinking they've learned how to save and invest.
Morgan Housel probably said it best: "Your personal experiences with money make up maybe 0.00000001% of what's happened in the world, but maybe 80% of how you think the world works."

"The word *priority* came into the English language in the 1400s. It was singular. It meant the very first or prior thing. It stayed singular for the next five hundred years. Only in the 1900s did we pluralize the term and start talking about priorities. Illogically, we reasoned that by changing the word we could bend reality. Somehow we would now be able to have multiple 'first' things."
