Wrote my brief thoughts about #bill_c22 here:
"1984: The Canadian Edition"
https://btxx.org/posts/1984/

2026-10-26 15:12:49 UTC

Since my country is working so hard to destroy our rights and freedoms as citizens, I'm putting together a very streamlined (and hopefully beginner friendly!) guide to placing your entire home network behind a trusted VPN (in my case, Mullvad).
Ref: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/10/canadians-are-running-out-time-oppose-dangerous-c-22-surveillance-bill
It won't resolve the issue fully, but will at least help.
P.S. If you're Canadian and haven't signed the above petition, please do!

Grubby now generates individual pages for each commit (linked under the main commits page). Made some other tweaks for some performance wins as well 👍
Commit example: https://git.btxx.org/grubby/commits/fa7a3200238db19322f616707557f6a98cdaa36a.html

Pushed out a set of small, but helpful changes to grubby (https://git.btxx.org/grubby/)
- Avoid creating HTML files for source items larger than 1MB (instead creates a page mentioning "too large")
- Now shows each file size in the list view and on individual source file pages
- Agnostic on lower/uppercase for README filenames (overlooked that since the beginning - oops!)
- Sticky number lines that stay in position on horizontal scrolling
This is why dogfooding helps!
Now I'm heading off the bed :P

I know it's still very much a WIP, but I'm excited to eventually try out AlpineBSD
https://sr.ht/~sircmpwn/alpinebsd/
(NetBSD base + Alpine pkgs)
#netBSD #alpinelinux

Tierhive (which is currently hosting my https://openbased.xyz and https://httpd.rocks projects with #OpenBSD) now supports #NetBSD!
tierhive.com
- 1 vCPU
- 512MB RAM
- 1GB Storage
Under $5 per year!

Making some minor tweaks (mostly visual) to my static site generator for #git (grubby!) https://git.btxx.org/grubby
No longer listing out repeat files under the same directory. They are now grouped under a single instance:

I may or may not be tweaking my own fork of a static site generator for #git repos... 👀

The official OpenBSD homepage is now fully responsive! Took me by surprise this morning 😛

Yeah, but then I’m still at the whims of a 3rd party 😛

2026-09-17 14:29:55 UTC

I think I'm slowly going to make my way back to self-hosting my repositories (via cgit, most likely). Most providers now either have too strict of rules or none at all...
Probably better to have full control anyway 🤷

My M1 Air feels snappier as well. Good job (so far) to Apple. Reminds me of the initial Snow Leopard days.

I finally had some time to put together my quick post about running an #OpenBSD #VPS for just $5 PER YEAR

Does anyone have any experience running Mox as their mail server?

I've updated the instructions on Caddy Ninja to include the option of running everything on #NetBSD
https://caddy.ninja
Bonus: That site is now hosted on NetBSD running #Caddy 😛

Your best bet might be popping into a local Home Depot or Home Hardware (or better yet, a local building supplier) and check if they have a “worker / freelance” business card section.
Most have a set collection of local independent contractor info that might be able to do those repairs.

2026-08-23 01:26:56 UTC

I’ve been enjoying my time testing out #Caddy running on my #NetBSD server. As much as I love #OpenBSD, NBSD is really grabbing my interest as of late 😎

Wrote a very small post about this recent #httpd change for #OpenBSD here:
"So Long Relayd, and Thanks for All the Fish"
https://btxx.org/posts/so-long-relayd/

2026-08-15 17:17:42 UTC

Pretty cool update for #httpd on #Openbsd!
You can now set the Security Headers directly inside httpd.conf. No need to work with relayd!
I've updated my guide here: https://httpd.rocks/
Note: You will need to be on -current in order to use these new settings. Still awesome though!

The GMKtec G2 Plus I've been running as my main personal workstation (since last October) is being listed on eBay now for ~$500 Canadian.
I got mine for $180 all in. The state of hardware prices are insane now...

2026-08-07 17:57:03 UTC

Going to do more testing over the weekend, but I might have found a ~$4/year VPS that can run #OpenBSD #FreeBSD or #NetBSD
- 512MB RAM
- 5GB SSD
- 1vCPU
Caveats: it’s NAT VPS, so TLS needs to terminate at their edge.
Check out stats hosted here: https://obsd.btxx.org/
You could also go even cheaper if you configured less RAM or storage!

Do you have an official “just the flag” asset?

2026-08-04 14:19:12 UTC

Since I already had the https://httpd.rocks domain (focusing on #OpenBSD) I figured it made sense to take advantage of the subdomain:
https://bozo.httpd.rocks
(Still placeholder until the guide is complete 😉 )

The Pi arrived this morning. Impressive!
There is also a microSD card already inserted, so it’ll be exciting to see what that has on it!
I’ll have more time to play with it tonight 👍

Just ordered myself a Raspberry Pi 400 (refurbished) for $54 CAD. Not too shabby!
I've been wanting to do a 30-day test run with a Pi 400 exclusively as my personal daily driver...

It's been roughly a week or so since testing out #Ubuntu on my #thinkpad T480s. I'm genuinely impressed how painless everything has been (connecting displays, driver support, wifi etc).
I know Ubuntu is picked on quite a bit, but I think it is one of the best free/open "starter" operating systems to introduce to newbies.

2026-04-15 19:29:44 UTC

Testing out a fun experiment of running a variation of my existing website locally.
What's cool about it?
- Served off a Raspberry Pi Zero 1.3
- Running entirely in RAM (thanks Alpine!)
- Web server -> darkhttpd
- Has a tiny ~$4/year VPS in front of it handling the TLS termination
I'm sure things will explode if too many visitors slammed the poor little Pi, but I think regular traffic would be completely fine ;)
If interested: https://zero.btxx.org
PS. sorry if it falls over!

Is #sourcehut #git down for anyone else? Or is this specific to my network? (Tested on both local internet and 4G mobile hotspots)
