Section 230 has veered so far from its original intentions it is unrecognizable. Big tech hides behind its protections while lobbing toxicity at us for profit.
I am astonished by the stubborn refusal of otherwise thoughtful people to recognize its role in giving life to *so* much of what is wrong.
Even IF we were to accept that platforms meet the letter of the law, its use is so clearly contrary to the spirit.

Data manipulation within the US Federal Government [1]
👉Government datasets modified without notice.
▪️We gathered metadata from the US Department of Health and Human Services, CDC, and Veterans Affairs database harvest sources [... ] that were modified between Jan 20 and March 25, 2025.
▪️We found that 114 (49%) of the 232 included datasets were substantially altered.
⭐SOME CHANGES⭐
- “Social determinants of health” to “non
medical factors”
- “Gender” to “sex”
- “female details” column deleted
▪️The agencies involved have not issued any statements confirming or explaining these changes [...]
▪️Despite Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr's (Department of Health and Humana Services) calls for “radical transparency”, unlogged data manipulation moves away from meaningful transparency.
▪️Only 15 (13%) of the 114 altered datasets logged or otherwise indicated that the change had occurred.

"Impulsivity refers to the tendency to act quickly without fully considering the consequences, often leading to risky or inappropriate behavior. [...] Impulsivity is a complex trait that can affect decision-making, emotion regulation, and self-control.
"There are several types of impulsivity.
▪️*Motor impulsivity* involves acting without thinking, such as blurting out answers or interrupting others.
▪️*Attentional impulsivity* is characterized by difficulty staying focused and being easily distracted.
▪️*Choice impulsivity* refers to a preference for smaller immediate rewards over larger delayed ones, reflecting difficulty with delaying gratification.
▪️*Cognitive impulsivity* involves making decisions quickly without adequately processing available information."
So... it's not just me?

Purpose is important, especially if you no longer struggle to meet your needs.
With a billion dollars, your basic needs are met and so is your ability to achieve your "wildest dreams."
Without these struggles or desires, the too-rich eventually examine themselves, their impacts, and their legacy.
And they realize that they lead lives without purpose; the world is not a better place because they are in it. And some of them become increasingly bitter.
❤️ The clever ones find a purpose.
The rest just double down on their pointless bitter lives.

This article is encouraging -- to the extent it highlights how very far Australia is from reaching their goals to end "#domesticviolence".
But it's also a frustrating read because it explores the well-intentioned, but generally misguided, government strategies.
I've not found many folks here focused on #IPV so I'll just leave it at that. 😶

Unfortunately, they're going about this in the same weasel way as Meta, Google, et al.
🤥 Claims of end-user #privacy via data aggregation are disingenuous -- as we've seen repeatedly.
Author of these new terms is recent hire Ajit Varma.
"Varma, the author of the above announcements, as a Firefox veep after previously looking after WhatsApp for Meta, and before that, Gmail, and its related tools for Google."

"Anonymizing" is nonsense in this context; they're providing user data to 3rd parties in exchange for something. This is a "sale" as reasonable people would understand it.
"We still put a lot of work into making sure that the data that we share with our partners (which we need to do to make Firefox commercially viable) is stripped of any identifying information, or shared only in the aggregate, or is put through our privacy preserving technologies (like OHTTP)."

Firearms remain the leading cause of death for young people.
Yes, climate change is critically important.
It is odd however how little discussion we have around firearm violence as compared to climate change given the facts.
This should not be a zero-sum game. I genuinely wish public discourse did not make it seem so.

I rarely use WP.
Anybody out there familiar with the "patterns" used by recent WordPress sites?
I'm currently trying to set up a small blog (a companion DB for our Masto instance) and am having trouble with *pattern overrides*.
I've made a post template which uses a pattern w/ overrides.
This screenshot shows how the post looks before publishing (L) and after publishing (R).
I haven't found much info online. Any suggestions what might cause this in WP?

😃 Years ago, I was excited when a Dr. Phil producer asked if I would be a guest.
We talked about the mission of our #charity - preventing teen dating violence, and our innovative use of prosocial video games to prevent violence.
The charity is in memory of my daughter - who was a high school senior when she was killed by her ex-boyfriend.
The producer then said they'd also invite my daughter's killer onto the show.
😢 That is when I learned the truth about Dr. Phil.
