I spent a good six months of my life working on problems related to securing the fucking bootstrap loader written permanently at the factory into the ROM of that Internet connected thermostat, and those other motherfuckers just shipped a straight up admin back door. Lol. Nothing matters. Kill IOT with fire. It is unsafe at any speed.

Dear @nprofile…60xv, one of the most absolutely maddening features of your iOS browser arises when scrolling a page that has a header frame that slides in and out of view. It pushes the text frame below it as it slides into view and pulls it back up as it slides out again.
Please stop moving the text I am reading and I have my thumb placed on it to move it as I am reading it because some other thing is on a timer that expires and decides to insert or remove itself from the layer above it.
Please, I am begging you. This is driving me insane.

@nprofile…5876 I know you were not seeking input and certainly not from pseudonymous weirdos, so I hesitate to answer the second question in your second point after what feels like it was meant to be a scolding in the first.
That said, at the risk of getting blocked by somebody I truly admire and wish to be able to continue to read, I’ll answer the question anyway: it seems to be that labeling the output as “undesired” actively centers the subject of the verb “to desire” on the person who makes the judgment on any particular output, whereas “undesirable” actively ascribes a quality to the output applied perhaps by some unseen authority.
Sincere apologies if this further reply is even more unwelcome than the first.

@nprofile…5876 I would suggest “undesired output” over “undesirable output” on the grounds that it’s a) shorter by a hair, and b) applies the modifier to the right object.

@nprofile…998y The way all this theory was sold to me when I worked in it was that yeah derivatives may all be zero-sum trades but they all generate valuable telemetry that can be mined for signals to use in refining the effectiveness and efficiency of the market.
That’s a more nuanced and subtle point to consider. It’s also complete horseshit, and it’s reinforced and fortified horseshit that costs a whole lot more to effort to debunk than the bullshit used to snow the retail investors.
One suspects the real purpose of all that derivative froth has long been to provide a maze of twisty passages in which to hide to the world’s vast money laundering operations.

@nprofile…wuyc Unless we come at this problem from a place where we have a firm footing on how the democratic power we hope to mobilize can fit properly into the international monetary order, we are going to be way too easily subverted by cryptofascist neofeudalists who will ride us to our deaths like cheap rented mules. It’s critical that we keep our heads on straight and remember that our marriage to the US federal government means our entire political economy is measured in dollars, and we must somehow make progress while maintaining our share in that economy.

@nprofile…wuyc Here is a related opinion in The Grauniad coming form a more left of center viewpoint: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/oct/05/blue-states-democrats-trump
A central underlying problem (carefully and perniciously buried under obfuscation in the Chron piece, and I believe overlooked naively in the Grauniad piece) is the same problem faced by many other movements toward establishing a dual state power: the international monetary order and the power to mint legal tender.
See every last movement trying to leave the EU, or the movement for Scottish independence, or or or or…

@nprofile…wuyc I’m gonna need to rant about how this is a very bad development. The Chron placed this right wing grenade outside its paywall, something it almost never does, and it knows what it’s doing. Everyone in the broader coalition against right wing extremism needs to know how to resist this framing. It’s poisonous, and we need to respond with active reasoning to counter it.

https://www.axios.com/2025/05/19/moodys-credit-rating-us-debt-reason
Now is an excellent time to remember that the only way a sovereign nation state can default on government debt instruments denominated in a currency that it has the sole power to mint, is if its political system is so degenerate and suicidally stupid that defaulting on the government debt is a plausible scenario for how events could unfold.
There is no plausible scenario where the U.S. government is forced into default on treasury debt by circumstances outside its control. If the government defaults then it will be entirely because the political choice to do so somehow comes to be made by the President, his entire cabinet and the leadership of both houses of Congress.
Downgrading the US treasury is a serious declaration that you think this is completely within the boundaries of possibility.

@npub1ev6…nh08 I’m sympathetic. I almost got rear-ended last night by a Cruise robot while I was backing out of my garage. It didn’t seem to predict the turn I would have to make to orient properly into the lane ahead of it. I had to stop suddenly to avoid collision, which left me blocking traffic in both directions on Castro Street while I wheeled back and forth in a tight space until I could move again.

@npub1ev6…nh08 I like how the thesis is that you have to pick two of three things to prevent, and one of them is “moral hazard,” as if unethical behavior on the part of public officials is a force of nature that can only be managed by simply not tempting them with opportunities. The idea of prosecuting them for crimes or impeaching them for misconduct is just not on the table. Why would it be?

2023-06-08 14:13:11 UTC

- reply

@npub1ev6…nh08 Sure, and regulatory bodies could also figure out what data they want to compel to be disclosed, and also how that data is used to calculate risk estimates like the one our MTA chief pulled out of his nose in the absence of both of those things. I’m sympathetic to a point: did Waymo and Cruise roll fleet vehicles without safety drivers before they were ready? I personally happen to think so, but that is, alas, a *subjective* judgment on my part, and I’m not a neutral party. To their credit, Waymo and Cruise, like my own employers, are collaborating with regulators to make appropriate rules. And to the chief’s credit, he’s right to note that the incentives of industry to take short cuts and compromise on safety are pretty strong, stronger in the case of companies that rely on venture capital investors.

- reply

@npub1ev6…nh08 I’d like to see the methodology he uses to arrive at that “6.3x less safe than a human driver” because from my inside the industry perspective I think there is not a whole lot of consensus about how to calculate that with any real confidence. That might be a plausible number, I don’t actually know how well Cruise and Waymo perform, but I’m skeptical about the methods used to arrive at the number.
