Ego Death Builds A new Ego
Ego death has become something people pursue. There are retreats built around it, ceremonies that promise it, and a steady supply of writing about how to get there. The implied arc is that the ego is a problem, the problem can be solved, and solving it produces a person who sees clearly and wants little. I think the whole arc is aimed at the wrong thing, because the ego was never the trouble.
The ego is the function that holds a person together well enough to act. It keeps a continuous story running so you can make a decision today that still makes sense tomorrow, remember what you value under pressure, and move through a day without re-deriving your entire position on everything. Strip that out and what you have is someone who cannot function, which is a condition we already have names for and do not generally recommend. What causes trouble is narrower. The ego gets the final say on everything, including questions where it has no business being the authority, and the available fix for that is demotion.
It's worth looking at what happens in the one setting where any of this gets measured. In 2015, Lebedev and colleagues scanned fifteen people who received psilocybin intravenously and reported their degree of ego dissolution. What they found was a loss of integration. Communication between the medial temporal lobe and higher cortical regions dropped, the salience network came apart, and coordination between the hemispheres fell. The salience network is the thing that decides what in your environment gets flagged as worth your attention, so when it disintegrates, the ordinary business of sorting the world into relevant and irrelevant stops happening.
In plain terms, the machinery that assembles a coherent self from moment to moment stopped coordinating. The self stayed where it was. What paused was the stitching.
That's a small study, and measuring something this subjective is difficult, so hold the specifics loosely. The shape of the finding matters more than the numbers. What dissolves is an integration, and integrations reassemble. Everyone in that scanner was themselves again a few hours later, which tells you the main thing worth knowing about ego death. It's a state. Whatever happened, it ended, and the person it happened to went back to having preferences and opinions and a sense of being someone in particular.
The harder claim, and the one I'd defend most strongly, is that when the real version happens, nobody chose it. It arrives through a diagnosis, a bankruptcy, a marriage ending, a career that stops existing, a public failure that cannot be explained away. It shows up when the story you had been running about who you are stops being able to account for what is actually happening, and you cannot get the story working again no matter how hard you push. That is an event, and it happens to you.
The pursued version is a different thing wearing the same name. A ceremony is a controlled encounter with dissolution that comes with a return ticket, a facilitator, and a scheduled end time. People get real things from it and I am not dismissing that. But the knowledge that you'll be back by Sunday does most of the work of making it survivable, and that knowledge is exactly what the involuntary version withholds.
This connects to something I argued in the book and still believe. Constraint reveals character rather than building it. Pressure removes the room a person had to perform in, and what's underneath becomes visible, to them most of all. Involuntary ego death is that taken to its limit, which is what happens when the room disappears entirely and there's nothing left to perform for. You cannot want this, and if you're seeking it, you're almost certainly not in it.
So what actually dies. The self survives, still preferring coffee to tea, still annoyed by the same people. What ends is a specific story, the version of yourself you had been defending, the account of who you are that your decisions were arranged around. People describe this as losing themselves and I understand why, because from the inside the story and the self aren't distinguishable, which is the whole problem the book is about. What goes is narrower than it feels. It was a narrative, it was always a construction, and its collapse feels like annihilation because you had never located yourself anywhere outside it.
Then comes the part almost nobody mentions. A new story assembles immediately, within weeks and sometimes days. The machinery that built the first one is still fully operational and it doesn't sit idle waiting for permission. It takes the most salient material available, which is now the collapse itself, and it builds.
The new identity is a person who lost everything and came through it, who has seen what matters, who is no longer fooled by the things that fool everyone else. That identity has the same properties as the one it replaced. It confers standing, it would cost something to give up, and it generates its own defensive reflexes, which are harder to examine than the originals because examining them looks like doubting hard-won wisdom rather than questioning a position. It's also why people who have been through genuine ego death are so frequently insufferable about it. That's the machine doing the thing the machine does, with better raw material than it usually gets.
None of which means nothing happened. Something did, and it can matter enormously. What changes is that you watched the story come apart and reassemble, and you were present for the assembly. You saw the seams. A person who has seen their own story get built has a harder time believing the next one arrived from somewhere outside of them, which is a smaller claim than enlightenment and the one that survives.
So the available thing is demotion. The ego keeps running, because you need it running, and it keeps producing verdicts. What changes is whether its verdict is final, whether there's a gap between the reaction and the ruling, and whether anything else gets to speak in that gap. That doesn't require a ceremony or a catastrophe. It requires noticing, repeatedly, that the voice insisting it knows is the same voice that has been wrong before, and declining to give it the last word on this particular occasion.
It also doesn't stay done. It has to be done again tomorrow, and the day after, and it never produces a person who has finished, which is probably why nobody sells retreats for it.

Shadow Work Has a Shadow
Somewhere in the last decade, shadow work stopped being a thing people did and became a thing people announce. It has the shape of a genre now. There are prompts and worksheets. There are people who describe themselves as being in their shadow era. There are threads that open with "I've been doing a lot of shadow work lately" and proceed to a list of the author's darker traits, each one selected with care, each one somehow more interesting than embarrassing. There is a vocabulary, and the vocabulary is most often deployed at other people. That's your shadow talking.
What all of this has in common is that it is legible from the outside. It can be posted. And that alone should make a person suspicious, because the concept it borrows from was built to describe the part of us that resists exactly that kind of visibility.
Jung's formulation is less elaborate than its popular descendants. Everyone carries a version of themselves they are willing to look at, and everyone leaves things out of it. The leftovers do not evaporate. They remain operative, and they exert pressure from outside awareness. In the lectures collected as Psychology and Religion he puts it plainly: everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. He treats it at length in Aion, where the shadow is a moral problem implicating the whole personality rather than a catalogue of traits to be enumerated.
The part the genre has almost entirely dropped is the method. Jung did not think you could find your shadow by looking inward and making an inventory. His route to it ran through projection. You locate the shadow in what you cannot stand in other people, in the reaction that arrives too fast and runs hotter than the situation warrants. The irritation is the instrument. The contents of your own self-assessment are not, because the material in question is precisely the material your self-assessment has already declined to include. This is not a small detail. It is the whole procedure, and the popular version has inverted it.
The inversion matters because of what introspection turns out to be good for, which is less than we assume. In 2002 Emily Pronin, Daniel Lin, and Lee Ross described what they called the bias blind spot. Across a sample of more than six hundred Americans, over eighty-five percent rated themselves as less biased than the average American, and exactly one person rated themselves as more biased than average.
Three follow-on findings make this worse rather than better. Being told about the bias does not fix it: in later work by Pronin and Kugler, subjects who had the phenomenon explained to them went on to rate themselves as less susceptible than others anyway, so knowing the name of the thing did not move the estimate. Decision-making ability does not predict immunity either, since people who scored higher on measures of decision-making competence were no less likely to show the blind spot. And the mechanism is the one that should concern anyone writing shadow-work prompts, because people who look inward for evidence of their own bias come away misled. The processes they are looking for do not operate anywhere conscious attention can reach. Introspection returns a clean report, and the clean report is not evidence of cleanliness. It is evidence that introspection cannot see this.
Which is an experimental restatement of the thing Jung was describing. The shadow is defined by its unavailability to the inward glance, so a practice built on the inward glance will find, reliably, whatever the inward glance was going to find anyway.
From there the failure modes follow in a kind of order. The first is announcement. To say you are doing shadow work is to claim acquaintance with something defined by your not having it, and the claim may be sincere while remaining structurally strange, in roughly the way that describing yourself as humble is structurally strange. Whatever you have located and are now discussing has, by the act of locating and discussing it, moved into the part of you that is admitted.
The second is inventory. The genre's characteristic output is a list of one's own darker traits, but the traits available for listing are the ones already integrated enough to be named. Genuinely unintegrated material does not show up as an item on a list. It shows up as a reaction you would defend as reasonable.
The third is selection, which operates even within the admitted material. The traits that make the cut tend to be the interesting ones. Intensity. Impatience with fools. A certain ruthlessness. These read as complicated rather than unflattering, and crucially they do not cost the author anything. The traits that would cost something stay off the list, which is how you can tell the list is not the work.
The fourth is weaponization. The most common use of shadow language in public is diagnostic and aimed outward: that's your shadow, you're projecting. Deployed that way the concept becomes a method for dismissing an objection without engaging it, and it works unusually well because it is unfalsifiable. Denial confirms it.
The fifth is completion. The genre has an arc in which you do the work, you integrate, and you emerge. This is narratively satisfying and it is not what Jung described. He was clear that the shadow cannot be eliminated, only related to, and there is no terminal state in which a person is finished.
All of which brings up the thing the genre has produced that is worth naming on its own. A person who has done shadow work, publicly, acquires an identity, and the identity is this: someone who examines himself. Someone not fooled by his own story. Someone more self-aware than his interlocutors, and demonstrably so, because he has been willing to say unflattering things about himself where people can see.
That identity has the same properties as any other. It confers standing. It would cost something to lose. It generates its own defensive reflexes, and those reflexes are harder to examine than the ones that preceded them, because examining them threatens the very thing that was supposed to be the product of examination. So the practice produces a new shadow, located in the persona of the person who has addressed his shadow, and this one has better cover than the original because it is wearing the costume of the solution.
The strongest case against everything I have written here deserves stating properly, because it is not a weak case. Most people are never going to read Aion. A worksheet that gets someone to write down one thing they dislike about themselves is doing more than the nothing that was happening before, and some fraction of those people will go further on their own. Degraded transmission is still transmission, and a concept that reaches a million people in simplified form may do more good in aggregate than one that reaches a thousand intact. There is also something faintly contemptible about criticizing people for attempting self-examination badly, particularly when the criticism comes from someone whose own attempts are not available for inspection.
I think most of that is correct, and I do not think it rescues the practice, for a reason that has to do with what failure looks like here. A person who never attempts any of this retains an accurate sense of not having done it. A person who completes the exercise acquires the sense of having examined himself, and the research says that sense is uncorrelated with whether anything was actually found. So the failure mode is not zero progress. It is confident false progress, which is worse than none, because it closes the question. Having done the work, there is nothing further to look for, and the next disproportionate reaction that arrives gets filed as information about the other person rather than as data about yourself. The practice that was supposed to make you slower to judge has instead issued you a certificate.
None of this is an argument against the concept. The concept is sound and the mechanism it describes is real. It is an argument that the popular practice is constructed in a way that cannot reach it, that the practice reliably produces a secondary benefit in the appearance of depth, and that the secondary benefit is probably doing most of the work.
The honest version is not a genre, because it does not produce anything postable. It runs on what Jung actually pointed at. You get irritated by someone, and the irritation is disproportionate, or it arrives before you have evaluated anything, or it persists after the stimulus is gone. That reaction is the only reliable signal available, because it originates outside the part of you that curates. Then you ask what the reaction was protecting, the answer is almost never intellectual, and you do not get a certificate.
It has no arc. It does not conclude. Nothing about it demonstrates to anyone that you are a serious person. And the most reliable sign that it is happening is not that someone is talking about doing it. It is that a person has become slightly slower to be certain about other people's motives, which is the single hardest change to make and the easiest one to miss.

Afterglow captures a quiet moment suspended between delicacy and light. The piece is less about symbolism than atmosphere. It explores contrast, fragility, and the way something enduring can exist inside something fleeting.

Ram Dass was an early influence on me and I'm still subscribed to the newsletter, so this landed somewhere specific.
"Autonomy without awareness is merely ego on a longer leash" is the line I'll be carrying around. It's the part most sovereignty talk leaves out.

Remnant explores what remains after disruption. A fractured Bitcoin form emerges from layers of black, white, and gray, partially erased yet still unmistakable. The surrounding structure feels broken, incomplete, and in motion, while the central shape persists through the distortion. The piece is about survival, memory, and the parts of a system that remain recognizable even after everything around them has changed.

The Smallest Territory
I made a statement recently that sovereignty begins when you stop giving what you cannot control authority over what you can.
I’ve been sitting with that sentence for a while, because the first half is easy to agree with and the second half is where all the trouble is.
In the world I spend most of my time in, sovereignty has a settled meaning. Hold your own cryptographic keys. Run your own node. Don’t let a third party stand between you and the thing you own. That version is real and I’m not going to argue against it. But it’s the easier half because it’s tangible. You can tell whether you’ve done it. There’s a seed phrase or there isn’t.
The harder version doesn’t come with a checklist. And much of the authority we surrender isn’t handed to institutions anyway. It’s handed to rooms.
Think about what actually governs most of your days.
Not a central bank. A person. The anticipated reaction of someone whose opinion you didn’t choose to care about and can’t seem to stop caring about.
There’s a name for the mechanism. Call it social calibration. You learn the shape of a room, what it rewards and what it costs you, and then you adjust to fit it. The adjustment happens below the level you’d notice. You learn these edges early and internalize them so completely that the limits arrive already disguised as your own good sense.
I spent a career in engineering, in rooms where the fastest way to lose standing was to keep reopening a question everyone else considered closed. Nobody ever said that out loud. They didn’t need to. You watch what happens to the person who does it once, and you understand. What you take away isn’t a rule. It’s a tension that shows up about half a second before you speak, and by the time you notice it you’ve already adjusted.
You probably have your own version of this.
Not a decision you regret. Something smaller and harder to catch. A meeting where you had the sharper read and offered a softer one. A conversation where you went vague deliberately or spoke out of your depth. Something you believed and declined to say in front of one specific person.
You may not remember the words. You’ll remember the feeling, because it’s physical and it’s specific. A tightening in the chest or the throat. A narrowing. The sense of a door closing quietly before you got to it. And then, afterward, the relief of not having disturbed anything, which is the part that teaches you to do it again.
Eventually, nobody has to control you directly. You carry the room with you. The adjustment happens so quickly and smoothly that it registered as judgment rather than surrender.
I want to be careful here, because calibration is not the enemy and an essay like this can easily turn into an argument for being difficult.
Reading a room is a skill. Groups give you coordination, safety, a shared way of making sense of things, and none of that works if everybody says every thought they have. Adjusting how you put something, or deciding this isn’t the moment, is often the right call and sometimes the kind one.
The problem is calibration that runs automatically. When the adjustment happens before you’ve had any say in it, and arrives wearing the language of good judgment, you aren’t making a call. The room is making it and sending you the bill as though it were yours.
Here’s where the sentence gets complicated.
The obvious reading is that there’s an outside, full of things you can’t control, and an inside, which is yours. Sovereignty means defending the border. Keep the outside out.
But that reading assumes the inside is under your control, and it isn’t.
In 1987 Daniel Wegner and his colleagues asked people to spend five minutes not thinking about a white bear. They thought about it constantly. Then came the part that matters. When those people were later allowed to think about the bear freely, they thought about it more than people who had never been told to stop. to be reclaimed every day. Trying not to have a thought produced the thought, and then produced extra.
Evaluation runs on the same automatic track. Research on automatic attitudes going back to the 1980s found that people assign good or bad to something within a fraction of a second of encountering it, before deliberate appraisal is possible and without intending to. The verdict is in before the court convenes.
And when we explain why we did something, we may be reporting a plausible story rather than observing the process itself. We don’t have the access to our own minds that we assume we do. We have a narrator who is confident and frequently wrong.
If sovereignty means governing your inner life, nobody has any. The territory has to be smaller than that, and more specific.
What you actually control is the gap.
There’s a space between the reaction and the ruling. The reaction shows up on its own, fully formed, with a verdict attached. The ruling is whether that verdict stands.
Most of the time the gap is so small you miss it. The reaction arrives, the ruling is already made, and the sentence is out of your mouth. But occasionally you can catch that half second, and that half second is the entire sovereign territory. It isn’t much. It’s enough for one question.
The question I use is this: am I calibrating, or am I concluding?
They produce identical-looking behavior. You can soften a position because you’ve thought about the room and decided softening serves the point, and you can soften it because the tension arrived and you obeyed it. Same words. Completely different acts. And I can usually tell which one I’m in if I ask before I speak rather than after.
When it’s calibration, I can say what the adjustment is for. There’s a reason I could defend out loud.
When it isn’t, there’s no reason available. There’s only the tension, and a sentence that showed up already shaped to relieve it.
That’s a smaller claim than most things written about sovereignty, and I think it’s the only version that survives contact with how minds actually work. You’re not the author of your mind. You’re sometimes the editor.
Two things feel like sovereignty from the inside and aren’t.
The first is not caring. The pose that you’ve risen above other people’s opinions, that nothing outside gets a vote. I’m skeptical that this version is ever as complete as it feels. What it usually means is that the authority moved to a smaller, more private audience, or to a past version of yourself you can’t stand to contradict. The dependence didn’t end. It changed addresses.
Contrarianism is the same outsourcing with the sign flipped: if your position is reliably the opposite of the room’s, the room is still writing your conclusions.
The second shows up later, and only after the work has started. Once you realize the work never finishes, another temptation appears: finding something that will do it for you. A framework. A community. A person who seems to have already arrived.
Each of those is partly legitimate, which is exactly why it’s hard to catch. Frameworks are useful. Communities do support people. What the wish adds is the hope that the external thing will do the internal work, and that is the move the sentence is warning about. Handing authority over what you can control to something you can’t, because holding it yourself is heavy and nobody would blame you for setting it down.
Sovereignty does not feel like freedom. It feels like weight.
Anyone who has moved their own coins knows the specific version of this. There’s nobody to call. The responsibility doesn’t divide. A mistake is entirely yours and stays yours.
What you get in exchange is that the coherence you end up with isn’t on loan.
The old kind was. It came from a shared framework, institutions, and the quiet agreement of everyone around you that the story being told was the one worth telling.
The loan was invisible because its source was everywhere, which made it feel like the natural condition instead of terms extended to you.
What grows back afterward isn’t issued by anyone. No institution grants it. No community confirms it. It comes out of making decisions that match what you believe and staying with what those decisions produce. It’s harder to keep. It’s more completely yours.
So, the sentence, with everything behind it:
Sovereignty begins when you stop giving what you cannot control authority over what you can.
It’s a half second of ground, and it has to be reclaimed every day.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I love creating digital Bitcoin art.
I’ve always thought art was a powerful way to start conversations about Bitcoin. It can make an idea feel less abstract, invite curiosity, and sometimes open a door for people who would never sit down for a monetary policy lecture.
Over the years, I’ve consistently had people comment on the artwork I share and on the style I’ve developed. I wanted to create a place where that digital work could become tangible.
So I built BitcoinArtStore.com
Bitcoin art made for walls. Made to add color to a space, create conversation, and give some of these ideas a physical presence.
The first collection is live now.
Take a look and let me know what you think.

I post something about Bitcoin. Within a few minutes someone replies with a project I've never heard of, or one I have, and a line about how it solves what Bitcoin can't.
And before I've read the whole reply, I'm already composing.
It's not a decision. There's no moment where I consider whether to engage and conclude that I should. The response is just there, assembled and ready, and what I notice first isn't a thought at all. It's a small tightening somewhere in my chest, a flash of irritation, the beginning of a tone. The argument arrives a half second later, dressed as the reason for the feeling.
Now, I want to defend myself here, and I think the defense is good.
I did the work. Years of it. I read the arguments on both sides, and I sat with the ones that made me uncomfortable. I didn't arrive at Bitcoin by being handed it. I got there slowly, through a lot of reading and a fair amount of being wrong in public. I've also been scammed. I put money into things that turned out to be exactly what the skeptics said they were, and I learned what that costs in a way that reading cannot teach you.
I wrote an entire book about the distinction. It's called Bitcoin, Not Crypto. That's not a position I hold casually. It's a position I published under my own name, with the title doing the arguing before anyone opens the cover.
So when someone shows up in my replies with a token, I'm not reacting out of ignorance. I'm reacting out of something I earned.
Here's the problem with that defense.
The heat in my chest doesn't know any of it.
That reaction fires exactly the same way in a person who spent six years reading and getting burned, and in a person who read one thread and picked a team. The sensation is identical. The speed is identical. The fluency of the argument that follows is identical, and in my case probably better, because I've had more practice.
The reflex is not evidence that I'm right. That's the part I keep having to relearn. It isn't evidence that I'm wrong either. It's evidence of something much more specific and much less flattering: that the belief is load-bearing. Something is resting on it, and the machinery that protects what's resting on it got there before my reasoning did.
The order of events is the thing worth noticing. You imagine you encounter a claim, weigh it, and then feel something about the conclusion. In practice it runs backward. Something in the body moves first. A tightening, a flash of irritation, a quick pulse of dismissal, and it arrives before you have language for it. Orientation shifts, and then the reasoning shows up and organizes itself around the orientation.
You don't need to know anything about the wiring of your brain to verify this. Just watch what your body does the next time a claim pushes on your professional identity, your politics, your read on the economy. The tightening comes before the counterargument. The sequence is observable from the inside if you're willing to look at it while it's happening, which is the hard part, because at that moment you are very busy being right.
There's a cleaner version of this I think about a lot. An idea you turn over happily on a leisurely walk becomes something you defend the second you say it out loud and watch someone's face start to disagree.
Same idea. Same evidence. Nothing about the argument changed. What changed is that your standing is now in the room.
Alone, curiosity runs cheap. In public, where other people can see whether you hold up, the body reads the exposure and the defenses come up, and you can feel the switch flip inside a single sentence. What looks like a debate about facts is very often an effort to manage a threat that nobody at the table has named.
That gives you a map, and it's the most useful thing in this writing.
The topics you can turn over calmly are not the interesting ones. The ones that produce instant tension are showing you precisely where a belief has fused to who you are.
So I have a map of myself, and Bitcoin is on it in bright red. I don't have to guess. I can feel it every time someone replies.
And here's where I have to be careful, because there's an easy move available to me and it's wrong.
The easy move is to treat fusion as a verdict. To say: I react defensively about Bitcoin, therefore my Bitcoin position is suspect, therefore the intellectually honest thing is to hold it more loosely. That sounds humble. It's just a different way of letting the reflex make the decision.
Conviction that was earned gets fused to identity too. Maybe especially. You cannot spend years on something, take real losses, change how you live, publish a book about it, and somehow keep the conclusion stored at arm's length from yourself. That isn't how people work. The fusion is a byproduct of having done the work, not a sign that you skipped it.
Which means the reflex tells you something real and tells you nothing about the question. It says: this is load-bearing, there is weight here, be advised. It does not say whether the thing holding the weight is sound.
The only way to find out is the slow way, and the slow way is the one the reflex exists to prevent.
So what do I actually do with the guy in my replies.
I've stopped trying to not have the reaction. That project failed. The reflex fires on schedule, it fires in the person who wrote a book about The Belief Machine, and it fires in the middle of him noticing that it's firing. Knowing the name for something does not slow it down.
What seems available is smaller. There's a gap, maybe half a second wide, between the contraction and the sentence. Most of the time I miss it. Occasionally I don't, and when I don't, one question fits in there:
Am I about to answer this person, or am I about to defend something?
Those look nearly identical from the outside. The words can be the same words. But they're different activities, and I can usually tell which one I'm doing if I ask before I start rather than after I've posted.
When it's defending, the tell is that I already know how the exchange ends. I'm not curious what he'll say. I'm running a script I've run before, and the other person is scenery.
When it's answering, I don't know how it ends. Which is uncomfortable, and slower, and worse content.
I still believe Bitcoin is the superior asset and that it has a real shot at being sound money for a digital age. Nothing in here walks that back. I did the reading, I paid the tuition, and I'd make the same argument again tomorrow.
But I'd like the argument to be the reason I'm making it.
Right now, a lot of the time, the argument is just what showed up to explain the heat.

For fourteen hundred years the best minds alive believed the sun circled the earth.
The system worked. It predicted eclipses. It told sailors where they were. And every morning the evidence showed up right on schedule.
When a planet wandered off script, nobody threw out the model. They added a circle riding on a circle, and the planet fell back in line. It worked, so they used it again the next time. And again. Circles on circles, every repair making the system more elaborate and more trusted.
Nobody inside it experienced themselves as propping up a failing model. They experienced themselves as refining a successful one.
Stability is very easy to mistake for truth. One is about how well a system holds together on the inside. The other is about whether it matches the world. They overlap often enough that you stop checking.
The question isn’t if you have a model. You do. It’s what you keep adding circles to.

@nprofile…9kjp @nprofile…8rlk why not support Bitcoin use as a peer to peer cash system?

No reason not to. Would be very convenient. Easy for @strike to accomplish and would increase their traffic while supporting peer to peer markets. Win win.

I created two limited-edition FUGUM hats for the Midwest Bitcoin Summit.
I’ve decided to make them @nprofile…lx7w exclusives to support my friend @nprofile…x2ln and decentralized marketplaces.
They’ll be available at the Conduit booth alongside a bunch of other awesome goods you can buy with Bitcoin.
Only 21 of each design. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
