My kid wrote Speed a letter for an assignment. And someone in Speed's organization wrote back and sent him a shirt.
Speed? I had no clue, but I have since found out that this is a BIG deal. IShowSpeed is definitely someone.

That is exactly what happened. MIL and stepfather. MIL actually got the house in the divorce, but then had to sign it over to FIL as the bank had started the foreclosure process just a couple of years later. This occurred nearly 30 years ago. Long before I met my husband.
And thank you for the kind thoughts. Losing my FIL has been horrible. I never realized how much I would miss him, and my husband and oldest son are really heartbroken.

Death of a Father-in-Law: All the Details
Father-in-law dies a couple of months ago. Admitted to hospital and released with an OK prognosis. And then he wasn't OK.
There are three sons, and I am married to the middle one. Several years ago, my FIL moved in a girlfriend who was a horrible person. My husband took a stand, and neither of his brothers supported him. Their mother, who divorced my FIL 30 years ago and remarried 20 years ago, sided with the other two sons. They were correct in understanding that their father was an adult making his own decisions.
My FIL did not marry the woman, and we knew that he had not put her on the title of the house. She died a couple of years ago, and my husband and his father started repairing their relationship. When my FIL died, my husband admitted that he was angry that his father picked the woman over him. But he stepped up to the challenges, and there have been many.
Including his mother, who decided she was the widow.

It is thought that the project is going to include what is referred to as the largest data center in the nation. California Forever will only state that its plan does not include data centers, but the EIR is going to include restrictions and protections.

Newsom is helping the billionaires. And while his office has declined to comment on the Billionaire City, his Chief of Staff, arranged a meeting today to discuss the project.
If you are in California, consider calling the governor's office. The push is for special legislation that will open the door for other developers to circumvent local control.

Hmm...
Well researched and quite interesting - sort of. Certain sections are interesting, but other sections have so many names and going ons that it can be hard to follow. Basically, she was murdered, and it was covered up to prevent the will from being challenged. Add a little corruption and the 1906 earthquake, and the explanation of a death from (somewhat) natural causes was accepted.
A few interesting paragraphs about M. H. de Young and Adolph Spreckles. Today, the two museums they are associated with are now basically one museum. But back in the day, Spreckles shot de Young. De Young survived, and Spreckles was acquitted.

Last night, I quickly gave up on a novel about Isabella Stewart Gardner. Three books I would like to read are on hold.
So, I decided to go contemporary true crime. I downloaded a book this morning and started cleaning my house.
Just finished the book and most of the cleaning. Book was more enjoyable.

Started this book in December 2025 after I listened to a book about the history of Palm Beach. The book referenced Paris Singer, who was the father of Isadora Duncan's youngest child. The couple was in France when their son, her daughter, and the nanny were killed in a shocking auto accident. The book then linked a Palm Beach resident to the scarf Duncan was wearing and which caused her death in a freak auto accident.
I knew nothing about Duncan other than she was a dancer. The book was really odd, so it took a while to finish it. The ending was downright bizarre. She is dead, with no explanation.

Finished this book earlier this week.
I borrowed it from the library and did not want to return it. It was a perfect follow up read to Empress of the Nile, the story about a female Egyptologists 's work to save Egyptian temples that would destroyed when the Aswan Dam was completed. Jackie Kennedy was instrumental to securing the US's financial support.
And in the last chapter were some paragraphs the Mona Lisa's return to Paris from a subsequent tour of Tokyo and Moscow. Unlike her visit to the US, when she traveled by ship, she went by plane. And a spaceship appeared.
I read the paragraphs. Reread the paragraphs. And then wondered why there weren't a few more paragraphs.

Dead Man's Folly has Ariadne Oliver making an appearance. And a mention of Capt. Hastings. While a fine Christie book, I am going to watch the Suchet version soon. I think seeing the characters and settings will add a lot.
What does this folly look like? One question that will not be explained. Why is it called a Dead Man's folly? 🤷‍♀️

Spent Saturday and Sunday doing yardwork and listening to Agatha Christie books. Finished two. Sad Cyprus was different than the Christie books I've read. With the exception of a brief appearance at the beginning of the book, Poirot is not in the first half. At the end, Poirot testifies at the trial. Christie did not typically have Poirot reveal the who, how, and why of the murder at a trial.

Getting ready to start my Common Book, but it's taken me a while to decide what the first pages should be. What is it that I love so much that it should be the start of a book of knowledge and lists and inquiry?
And it became clear to me a couple of weeks ago: Agatha Christie's mysteries, specifically the movie and TV adaptations with Peter Ustinov and David Suchet. I've been watching the movies again this month and decided to reread Evil Under the Sun and Death on the Nile. Unlike the movies, her books are simply OK.
Ah, but then I discovered that the audio versions are narrated by David Suchet, and I was very happy.

Last book of 2025.
This year started with Truman Capote and moved to Kennedy men misbehaving. Summer spent reacquainting myself with Judy Blume. Then back to Kennedys, which led to Jackie Kennedy's impact on the arts and historical preservation with a brief return to Truman. Egyptology followed, and then Palm Beach, mystery writers, and Guilded Age heirs.
This story is about a great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton. The story about him and his grifter wife is something.
2026 will (hopefully) be expanding on Judy Blume and other women authors that pushed boundaries in the 60s and 70s, as well as the pile of books about art - the artists, their inspirations, and a theft or two.
And Truman, of course. Always Truman.

Also included in the tale is Paris Singer. He was a partner of Isadora Duncan, and the father of one of her children. I know very little about her, so up next with be a novel. The Marjorie Post novel was awful, so I'm starting this one being quite wary.

The biography of JFK mistress Mary Meyer.
The affair and her murder are detailed in the last half of the book. The affair is why I pick up the book, and I started with that chapter. I, then, read about the murder. Meyer had been married to a high-level CIA operative, and there are questions about the murder, which happened just a year after JFK was assassinated.
Then I read the beginning of the book. And I was stunned. This book was written in 1997, long before Q-Anon and Trump, and it detailed Meyer's the political transformation of her father and her husband. Both men were pacifists, and both men became disenchanted with the Democratic party and shifted towards more extreme conservative positions to "save" the country. Her father embraced the America First movement to keep America out of WW2, and her husband's work with the CIA supposedly infiltrating and funding various groups, including the modern art movement.

Continuing with JFK mistresses in March. This is a novel about Mary Meyer's missing diary that was removed from her home following her murder. I don't care for novels with female main characters that are written by male authors, and I thought some of the scenes depicting her free spirited ways were a bit outlandish, like when she stripped off her clothes and jumped into a pool at a party hosted by Robert and Ethel Kennedy.
Then I read a biography about her. Those outlandish things did happen.

This book is based on real events that happened - three planes crashing in Elizabeth, NJ over three months. Blume grew up in the city and experienced the fear and uncertainty.

To this day, I find Carter's discovery fascinating. Candace Fleming's YA book detailing Carter's search and the rumors about the Boy King's curse.

Finished my fourth book of this year. Another Kennedy book.
I can't recommend this one. I think that in the author's attempt to present a kinder, more complete understanding of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, she quickly dismissed everything that may be considered a negative.

Unsettling read.
Nineteen years old when she begins an 18-month long affair with Kennedy. Continued after she became engaged. She claims that until Jackie Kennedy decided to go to Dallas, she was going to accompanying him on the trip and break things off.

Really interesting read. I did not know about the two young women involved with JFK during his presidency.
I went back and reread Judith Exner's claims, and it interesting that she framed her feelings towards JFK as being reciprocated. Her relationship was occurring at the same time as the other two women, and both claim that, at the time, they thought JFK had feelings for them. They wrote their accounts, however, much later than Exner, and it seems that in the decades between, they came to understand the relationship was vastly different than what they thought at the time.

And with this book completed, I am going to tackle the pile of art-themed books waiting for me. My unintended year with Truman Capote and his swans was quite fabulous.

Yes. This is exactly that moment.
The sadistic pleasure that he showed when telling dads to spank their daughter was beyond reprehensible.

He has a lot of unresolved anger at his mother, who left his father. But this is really gross.

The clip of Tucker Carlson talking about giving 15 year old daughters vigorous spankings?
WTF?
The language and the tone is sexual.
He is a sick.

Thought I might be done with Truman Capote, but then I found this book by his long-time boyfriend for a reasonable price.
After Feud came out, all of the out-of-print books on Capote and the Swans were very hard to find.

So, Donald Trump appeared on the road today. And it was sad.
Just a reminder that Commander Walsh warned his Handmaiden Comrades not to try to out celebrity the Democrats. He was worried that the energy seen in the Georgia rally wasn't real, but would become so as the media started reporting on it.
The energy is real, and it is growing. And Donald Trump's campaign is sad.

Someone has noted that the only reason Trump was on Twitter is because he is out of money, and this is a cheap way to campaign.
This was promoted by Trump as a fundraiser. There was a call for 10M people to donate, but when the Spaces started, there was no reference to this.

And we're done.
OK, Trump gave his Montana rally speech. And Musk outlined his reasons for supporting Trump.
Deregulation and curtailing government spending, which includes welfare benefits.
I understand that Musk is hoping to drive up support for Trump, but I am not sure that interview will do it. The billionaires like Ackman will say Trump did great, but it was a rambling mess.
Supposedly it was going to be fundraising event like the Harris Zoom calls, but I did not see or hear anything about donating. And I seriously doubt that there will be a bounce in the polls because of this.

Trump has someone in the room talking about the number of people listening. He asks if he is going to get paid.

2024-08-13 00:29:25 UTC

Twitter Spaces is not working. HAAHAHA!
Musk is claiming that the system was tested with 8M concurrent listeners earlier, and there were no issues. But now, it's broken.
They are going ahead with the program and posting it later.

The #ChineseSpyBalloon has me thinking of Candace Fleming's book, Crash from Outer Space.
Fleming is one of my favorite authors. She writes children's books, but even as an adult, I find her biographies to be exceptional. Her book on the Romanovs is one of the best I've read about the family, and her biography of Charles Lindbergh is outstanding and somewhat chilling. America First is not new to our country.
I'm such a fan that she sent me this as an advanced copy. And she signed it. 💙
