"Just 6% of Britons say they trust social media influencers to tell the truth. 87% say they do not trust social influencers to tell the truth, a figure that increases to 92% of degree holders, 95% of Millennials and 97% of Green party supporters."
"Even though politicians have now lost their bottom spot to this new group, they still receive their joint-lowest score since 1983 this year, with just 9% saying they trust politicians to tell the truth. While trust in politicians has always been low, the last time trust was at 9% was in 2023. 14% say they trust Government Ministers to be truthful, similar to the 2024 score of 15%."
"51% say they trust the police to tell the truth, a fall of eleven points since last year and the lowest score for this profession since the survey began in 1983."
"Trust in the veracity of local councillors is down ten points, to 30%."
"There are a few professions which score more highly among supporters of the #GreenParty than among the wider British public: trade union officials are 15 points ahead, trusted by 60%, while artists enjoy an eleven-point advantage over the wider picture, and civil servants and professors are also 8 ppts higher than average. However, there are just as many examples where Green Party supporters are less trusting – there is a 19-point deficit in trust in bankers (27% vs 46%), and an 18-point lag for estate agents."
"Among supporters of #ReformUK, there is only one group they claim to trust more than the average Briton – the ordinary person in the street. 70% say they trust the ordinary person, ahead of 61% for Britain overall."

Every mainstream party has decided not to stand in Nigel Farage's ridiculous ego-stroking and corruption-obfuscating by-election in Clacton. It looks like his only opponent is going to be Count Binface.
Last time, Farage was elected with less than 50% of the total votes.
This means all the people who voted for all the other parties last time have the opportunity to do something Really Fucking Funny.

I'm writing to you about the government's use of and creation of software, and the NHS policy in recent years of making as much as possible of the software that it creates, open source. This policy has had a number of benefits both for the government and the people of the UK, but there has been a lot of publicity today about backing off from that policy due to a perceived increased risk of 'hacking', due to the recent release of 'AI'-powered hacking toolkits.
I think this would be a mistake for a number of reasons, the simplest of which (if slightly glib) is probably "It's too late", very much along the lines of the proverb about stable doors. The more fundamental one is that secrecy is not the same thing as security. Open source software has a surprisingly good track record on security issues, precisely because so many people have looked at the code, and still failed to find any significant vulnerabilities. It is not just assumed to be secure because it is secret, it is proven to be secure despite not being secret.
Could I urge you to look into this issue, and write to the relevant minister(s) asking them to reconsider this unhelpful and uninformed knee-jerk reaction.
Yours sincerely,
Denny de la Haye

At every age range, the mean average is considerably higher than the median average. Which may or may not have been obvious to you, depending on how much you care about politics.

> Oh no! A trolley is heading towards 5 people. You can pull the lever to divert it to the other track, but then your life savings will be destroyed. What do you do?
After you do each problem it tells you how many people have pulled/not pulled the lever. I pulled the lever, obviously. Well, I thought it was obvious.
> 57% of people agree with you, 43% disagree
That was BY FAR the most evenly split it had been up to then. All the decisions about actively selecting the death of 1 instead of 5 or 4 instead of 5 and so on had been much easier for people to choose, apparently.

Does that say their shareholders got over _32%_ return on investment in 2022? 😯 I feel my pity is limited.

Looking at the last election results again.
Where I live, #Labour won, with more votes than everyone else put together. And then the #Greens came second, with more than everyone except Labour put together.
So, could be worse I suppose, at least it's not in much danger of going to Farage's fash at the next election... but I don't know what Labour would have to do for people around here to realise they're a hard-right party who hate poor people these days, and want to sell off the #NHS to private healthcare companies.
I mean, less so than the #Tories, but that's not saying much is it.

What a legacy. And what a healthcare system! Can Labour stop trying to emulate it now please?

Some rules for life derived by studying cats:
1. Express yourself as clearly as possible when people are touching you and you don't want them to.
2. Optionally; you can also express yourself as clearly as possible when people are not touching you and you would like them to.
3. You don't have to be the strongest or toughest to defend yourself, it's enough just to be difficult enough to not be worth the trouble.
4. Sometimes it's important to just go "Hrm. Actually, I don't care." and wander off.
5. Ghosts will eventually leave if you stare at them for long enough.

Yeah, none of my Hue bulbs has failed yet, and I've had the oldest ones since 2014, so ten years now.

Use the Hue ones. All the others trip up over little obstacles that Philips put in their way all the time.
I've got bulbs from several manufacturers, and over time I'm getting rid of all the other brands because they're a pain in the arse.
I don't think it's their fault, but unless and until the ecosystem gets more genuinely open and standards compliant, it's not worth fighting the uphill struggle, imo.

Rising cost of everything combined with pay not even tracking inflation for the last few decades will tend to cause an ever-increasing number of young (and not so young) people to ask themselves what the point is really, in staying alive and working hard just to be kicked in the teeth regularly - just because it makes for good soundbite politics, it seems sometimes.
I've lost 5 friends younger than me in the last few years, 4 of them to suicide, the other to NHS delays. I don't expect either number to stop there unless our government's policies start changing, dramatically and soon.
