I review synthesizers, more in fun than authority.
In the last few months there's been a tide of emulated old hardware. The results are good - the methods are beyond me. At this rate we'll have every old box available free in a year.
If you can code please tell me what is going on here. It's not just AI - it's a hybrid... #ai #musicproduction

Starting to notice a big slab of AI videos on YouTube. As many human made videos are equally bad it’s just a bit of bird spotting really.
Topic has a number: “12 facts about a topic”
Divided in sections with a title slide that cuts off before the voice has finished announcing it.
The voice is ‘giving a lecture’ flat.
Images from all over the place are used in illustration.
Same point can appear in several different sections.
Ends with no summary.
It must be getting bad for me to notice 😀

I’m on Threads and people are arguing about whether you can put vinyl grooves on a CD. The expert consensus is that’s stupid and impossible.
We sold hundreds of them 😀🤘didn’t we Stephen? #music

Not enough is being said about Ukraine bombing Russian data centres. Three destroyed and an amazing drop in far right accounts - One Nation, MAGA et. al. all gone from Twitter, Threads etc. Right now you can talk to real people.
The timing hits at least the mid term elections in the USA and general election in New Zealand. It’s a gift to the whole world from Ukraine. #auspol #politics

An old band member has died, which is very unfortunate. Stephen Jones was our video guy up to 1990 - after which I’ve handled the video for 36 years.
People are emailing me with condolences, who haven’t bothered to say hello to me in decades. I’m trying to be polite but honest - Stephen has done many other things a long time and deserves praise for that. We’ve occasionally caught up over the years.
I’m not the person to console. And the nostalgia is inappropriate at this moment.

No the sales are currently done by KIT, because I am only able to have some sent to Australia, and that would be even more expensive for most of the world.
We currently have a trade barrier of %15 applied by the USA.
I apologize that we don't have a system in place yet. #music

Just arrived - copies of the vinyl reissue of 1992’s Cuisine CD - it’s weird to see the disc art blown up to LP size. The original design was all done with glue and photos so the text looks - old.
They did a great job with a photocopy “zine” insert too.
Then again the music is 34 years old. Bloody hell. #musicproduction #music

Most of the time old LPs were reproduced as a CD before later going online. We’ve got an old CD that now appears as a double LP for the first time.
It was 1992 and everything was going digital - we now have scratches and rumble for first time 🤘
Cuisine with Piscatorial is now on vinyl!

As much as I enjoyed visiting Luna Park in Melbourne I still hold the Sydney Luna Park as the best - built in 1935 and still has all the charm.
(Fun fact: when the Sydney Opera House was granted a world heritage listing the local state government passed a bill making Luna Park the same land as the Opera House. So it cannot be demolished.)

We’re not likely to fit into the KPop scene. But we always try new formats. Take a look! #music #musicproduction

If you are still interested - my wife once heard a Nine Inch Nails song and was really FURIOUS that it sounded just like one of mine.
Which it does.
But then again they both sound a hell of a lot like Prince. 😀 #music

Ok so I followed advice and found about 175 tracks of my music was available in an AI database.
And well… I didn’t create this music out of air. Some - I heard other people and tried their ideas. Some of it introduced ideas new to popular music if not the edge. I borrowed and I gave.
Everything I’ve made will be forgotten at some point. If some of it is a bacteria in a future AI song that’s just the current way it flows.
And money was already taken by EMI back in ‘the good old days’. #music

I had intended to present a wild and wooly speech about music containers at ACMI in Melbourne in about a week. After months of discussion I’ve only just been told that I must present only vinyl records on their sponsors expensive turntable.
I can’t drop the flights and accommodation but if I am forced to play only vinyl on an expensive turntable at a ‘moving image’ venue I may walk. Forget it.

One of the music formats I will be presenting at ACMI is the Kit Album. A physical box with printed media inside - it links to your phone for 24 hours with a button push. The app shows a disc spinning 😀 but the sound can be Dolby ATMOS. Used to be K-pop but now a range of titles.
Very grateful to the young German man who gave me this physical object to show. #music

So InMusic just ate up Native Instruments. If you think that everything will just go on as normal you are so cute I want to pinch your cheeks. It deserved to be chewed up, being a bloated zoo of soundtrack ‘solutions’ which will now be wedged into MPC controllers with MOOG written on them.
And that’s fine. Because it’s 2026 and the future keeps on arriving and no amount of nostalgia is going to save you from change. #music #musicproduction

There was a time when I was well known enough to get emails from nutters from all over - which was better than the abusive phone calls. Been surprised to get a mail from an old nutter who has finally tracked me down and has started exactly where they laid off…
It starts

I’ll attach some pictures for you to ponder what having this kind of mail does for your community spirit.

I put in a bid for an APRA award (Grammy) for my score in The Correspondent & they didn’t even acknowledge the submission which was a big Fuck You Award.
So I’m happy/stressed that the music score just got a nomination for an AACTA (Oscar). That’s a 1/4 chance now.
Whether or not I deserve it - it’s a win for a fully electronic film score and that’s a cool thing for all of us making bloops so please send positive brain bribes to the judges. Bless. #musicproduction #australia

Very soon Australia will ban children under the age of 16 from social media. No X no Facebook no TikTok no YouTube …
You can imagine the big money anger that has gone into fighting this law.
But harm caused by ‘influencers’ and incels and algorithms has to be met.
We don’t expect it will always work. We do expect that people will see the harm social media can cause to young minds. Maybe your country could join in someday. At least think of what we are trying to do.

When speaking of fine art, it's important to remember it will be stored in refrigerated bunkers so that large amounts of drug money can change hands without taxation.
Sold for $236 million this canvas will now be a transferable asset held in a 'dark gallery'.
Doesn't mean there's no such thing as art, just that you shouldn't measure your own worth against this system #art

I’m enthralled by malls and don’t know why. But surely this would entertain anybody: we visited a mall and there was not a soul there. Staff placed at great distances like a game. One lot were selling a coffee machine. Would we like a coffee? Yes please. We carried our coffees further into the endless labyrinth. It was dead silent. Huge televisions. Heaters with fake log fires. Bedding. A kind of liminal Disneyland. Severance with kitchenware. 10/10 would visit again. #malls #liminal

Saw "Bring Her Back". I think it's a great film that should be seen. I also hated it. It's not a <horror film> (with all that baggage of tropes & cliches) as much as a horrific film (psychologically upsetting, ultraviolent). I wished some scenes would please end. But once seen it really does connect with Australian cinema - the threatening bush land, odd pauses and brooding personalities. This is NOT cheesy Blumhouse fodder.

While the Las Vegas Sphere plots with Google for an immersive Wizard of OZ, competitor COSM announces a scaled up surround version of the first Matrix movie for their cinemas in Los Angeles and Dallas TX.
COSM looks smaller but more likely to spread widely. (Except to Australia where 4K IMAX is wow.) Sometimes its not how big it is but what you do with it.

CineFex Magazine 1980-2021
"CINEFEX, launched in 1980, was a quarterly journal covering visual effects in films founded by Don Shay. Each issue featured lengthy, detailed articles that described the creative and technical processes behind current films, the information drawn from interviews with the effects artists and technicians involved.
In its February 2021 issue, #172, Cinefex announced its final issue of the magazine after 40 years of publications"

Off to see a pre-screening of Darlinghurst Eats Its Young - a film based on a suitcase found full of photos from the early 1980s in our inner city. I like the Las Vegas sphere and I like The Wizard of OZ movie. But using AI to expand the movie over the sphere adding features… it’s hitting my uncanny valley.
Absolutely I believe that immersive design is the future. I’ve spent an awful amount of time on it. But it requires new skills in storytelling. This seems a bad shortcut. Or just maybe I’m wrong. #immersion #ai #movies

I want to mention here that Australia is currently being attacked by USA medical corporations for having the PBS Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (cheaper socialised medicine for all).
If the US starts an economic war on this point there’s a good chance that the entire spectrum of the local population from Green to Nazi is going to completely lose their shit at the USA. Perhaps try practicing that Canadian accent. #auspol
