Most definitely not trying to call you out for photoshopping. Just saying I don’t have these skills… or patience… yet.

Thanks for the explanation. I haven’t had enough patience or will to get good at Photoshop. I stop at Lightroom’s limits, & I massively under-utilize LR’s capabilities.
I remember when similar trickery was done in camera. E.g. panoramic group photo when a person would duck behind the group after the camera panned them, run behind the group, and appear again on the other side of the photo when the pan caught up. It was magical. No software required.

My first #coffeeneuring post. We’ll see if it sticks.
I biked 7 miles to the bus station, took the bus down to Minneapolis, got coffee and lunch at Chimborazo, a delightful Ecuadorian restaurant on Central, then biked home with a strong southern tailwind. Today’s steed was the 1987 Woodrup, new to my stable. Total cycling miles today: 37.
The express bus didn’t show so I took the slow bus; it managed the headwind nicely on the southbound leg.

Post script: I took this photograph of my daughter drinking from a flowing well, near Savica Waterfall in Triglav National Park, Slovenia. The closing line of this haiku is borrowed from France Prešeren’s 1836 epic poem The Baptism on the Savica. I do have a favorite flowing well closer to home, just no photos of it, so I had to dig deeper into the archives for today’s prompt.

I'll add that the rengay form is also nicely amenable to a solo poem if you don't feel like collaborating. Or if you want to express more than is possible in a single, stand-alone haiku.

Those who dabble in modern flavors of Japanese style poetry (e.g. haiku, renga) may wish to follow up on rengay if you're unfamiliar with the term & style.
A good starting point is this post from
@npub1ecd…6ju4 (https://universeodon.com/@npub1ecd…6ju4/116374548854825371) and the linked article therein. #haiku #renga #rengay
A few of us have dabbled in it recently here on the Masto. Would be fun to see it grow. Just dive in (personal protective equipment recommended 😅 )

When a Poet Dies
When a poet dies
nothing happens.
A lesser poet
breakfasting on coffee
and a cherry strudel
picks up a newspaper,
turns pages to pass time.
After breakfast she will sit down to write.
Thus begins the one-poem book "When a Poet Dies."
This is a tribute to the poet William Stafford (Jan 1914--Aug 1993), but it’s also just a darn good story about poets and how they affect the world.

If you’re on the facebook, there’s a video clip you should see. Animation of an ICE agent shooting at words that flash on the street, words including: freedom, democracy, our community, our brothers, safety, our children, etc.
Apparently it’s projected onto Los Angeles’ Twin Towers, a building which houses some ICE functions. If it’s real, props to whoever did it.

ICE claims self defense, but Mayor Frey says that’s a “garbage narrative.” I’m inclined to believe Frey, given the trump administration’s propensity to assert things with zero evidence or in direct opposition to the facts.

Sugaree lyrics were adapted (with much poetic license) from Elizabeth Cotten’s Shake Sugaree. Morning Dew was a Bonnie Dobson composition.
As great as Hunter was as a lyricist, some of these others deserve recognition as well. And as great as Hunter & Garcia were as a team, Hunter & Weir wrote some great stuff too. Jack Straw, for example.
Not trying to argue. Just pointing out that it was a big tent.

After this morning’s four politically motivated shootings, including two murders and two seriously injured—and with the shooter still at large— public safety officials & Governor Walz urged folks to stay home, out of an abundance of caution.
But the #NoKings protests went on, just without Governor Walz and Lt. Gov Flanagan. Lots of good signage and karma, despite the heavy hearts.

I don’t believe one could reasonably conclude otherwise, based on the available evidence

Bombshell: deaths from non-chlorinated water (before chlorination was a thing) vastly exceed cancer risk from chlorinated water in the modern era.
By vastly, I mean orders of magnitude.
Not that we shouldn’t work to improve disinfection methods and reduce cancer risk…we should. But again, orders of magnitude difference in risk.

OK, I started up my peertube channel and uploaded a test video to it. It's a Wood Thrush singing. Sound on for this one! I hope you enjoy it.

I occasionally photograph birds, both stills and short videos. I'm looking into peertube to post video clips.
Anyone have recommendations for a server? I browsed a few instances.
peertube.tv is not accepting new accounts at this time. videos.trom.tf looks good (unlimited space per user; topics apropos to my uses).
Bonus: 10-min video about Green Sea Turtles in Cyprus that's worth a watch: https://videos.trom.tf/w/jGLrkirLAadz1fXGEkPMut

But we all know that a lot of xitter refugees came here, but didn't stay; or never came here at all.
Many of them stayed on X; many are on Meta's Threads. Lately, there's been another huge X exodus, and Bluesky seems to be the beneficiary (https://www.theguardian.com/media/2024/dec/11/from-x-to-bluesky-why-are-people-abandoning-twitter-digital-town-square).

Short thread on Bluesky
Although Mastodon existed prior to 2022, it's user base was small. Bit it got a big bump in Nov. 2022 when xitter started re-platforming hate-speech accounts. I was part of that wave of xitter refugees.
After getting used to some of the quirky features of Mastodon and the fediverse, I grew to like it here. No ads; no algorithm; in general the platform lacks the hate, vitriol, and level of willfully disinformed people that characterize the xitter experience. (1/n)

In USA, the carbon payback for EV vs ICE is about 2 years or 25,000 miles. Given that I generally run cars until they have >250,000 miles on them, I think it’s a worthwhile investment.
I did drive the ICE car that I had until it bit the dust; I’m glad to own an EV now. Voting for the Oily Boys every time I bought gas rubbed me the wrong way.
Still, I’d like much improved, electrified transit.

Especially useful to counter the narrative that musk is green. The petrol savings by all those Tesla cars is offset by the massive carbon footprints of musk’s private jet and, of course, SpaceX.
Musk is not green; he’s a profiteer.

I reached an important milestone this month: My age now qualifies me to join Third Act (https://thirdact.org/).
Anyone here have experience with this organization? They seem good; I'm interested in hearing some first-hand experiences.
I already do some volunteer lobbying with Citizens' Climate Lobby. Looking to do more to move the needle.

Good points. We need a carbon fee and dividend to redistribute some wealth from the biggest polluters to the people.
