Just finished the annual "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" viewing.
Yup, it still holds up. Everyone is very cruel towards Charlie Brown for no real reason. Snoopy steals the show.
Still love it.

Atom Zombie Smasher was a 2011 strategy game about rescuing civilians from zombies, set to some wonderful surf rock.
Notably, one of the tracks, "The Baron by The Volcanics, is partially a riff (heh) on "Breathless" by John Scott Trotter, famously used in "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown."

Received my copy of The Slayer Pack for Slay the Spire: The Board Game today.
For those unaware, the Slayer Pack is an unofficial expansion that adds a good chunk of content. I've played the heck out of the base game, and hopefully this will help keep things fresh until the Downfall expansion comes out next year.
Ordered it from MPC, which ended up being about $118 in total—pricey, admittedly, but I'm a sucker for Slay the Spire, and having the printed cards feel different from the official ones would bother me to not end.

I've recently been doing some decluttering, and rediscovered this book in my collection along the way. This is a 1923 edition of Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini, complete with stills from the silent film by Rex Ingram released that year. Kind of amusing to think that movie tie-in editions have been around so long!

I remember renting 007: Nightfire for the GameCube multiple times from the local Family Video when I was a kid. Never made any progress in the campaign mode, but played a ton of the local multiplayer against bots.
I really should see about getting the game someday to try actually playing the campaign. 😆
Anyway, the game had a great intro cinematic in the style of the Bond movies, and a solid theme song to go with it.

@nprofile…jpgl For something a bit off the beaten path, The Shipwreck Arcana is a 2 to 5 player cooperative logic/deduction game. The active player draws two numbers from a bag, plays one in front of an appropriate card, and the other players try to deduce what number they didn't play.
Also the only game I know of that supports players dropping in and out in the middle of a game.

@nprofile…x0vu Yeah, I remember that thing. Made me very glad I bought my racing wheel before that came around.
Really wish I had the space for a racing wheel now. Admittedly, I'd probably spend more time playing Euro Truck Simulator 2 than racing games with it. 😅

2026-08-19 22:15:54 UTC

I spent a good bit of time with Forza Motorsport 3 on the Xbox 360. Even had the official racing wheel for the 360.
Anyway, the soundtrack for Forza Motorsport 3 might not have the melodic hooks that a lot of classic games have, but there's still some earworms here. Lance Hayes was cooking up something special when he made "Elapsed Time."

Some short thoughts on some albums I've listened to recently:
Black Cherry by Goldfrapp: An absolutely fine album that failed to make much of an impression. The single "Strict Machine" is solid, and I don't recall any complete duds, but nothing else really stuck out to me.
Untrue by Burial: Who could have predicted a critically acclaimed album would be good? Not exactly what I envisioned when I saw "dubstep," but definitely a fan of what this album presents: moody electronic music with some ambient undertones. Particularly a fan "Near Dark."
Live at Stubb's 7/2000 by Ween: Wonderful and brown. Big fan of "Booze Me Up and Get Me High," despite me personally partaking in neither. 😆 Also a really solid performance of "A Tear for Eddie."

The Qobuz music store has a sale going on until the end of the month. While most of the sale discounts are mediocre—and some of it is literally cheaper to buy on CD and pay shipping—there are a few good deals scattered in.
https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/page/qobuz-summer-fest-2026
Some notable highlights:
- Ubisoft game soundtracks are mostly $5 each, with some at $2. (Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon by Power Glove!) Some unexpected deep cuts in the mix, too, like the Wii game Red Steel.
- Kid Katana Records also has some decent OST discounts: TMNT Shredder's Revenge, Jusant, Absolum, etc.
- Fire Records has some stuff ~$5: The Lemonheads, Pere Ubu, Spacemen 3, etc.
- Erased Tapes has some Nils Frahm on sale at various price points, not familiar with the rest of the label.

I had the chance to play Blitz Bowl for the first time yesterday. We used my friend's human and elven union teams from his copy of Blood Bowl because I have yet to assemble the minis for my copy of Blitz Bowl.
What a wild and wacky little game. Yeah, scoring touchdowns is great, but sometimes the right thing to do is just clobber some unsuspecting lineman to complete a challenge card instead. 😆
Looking forward to tabling this again. Probably could be talked into trying Blood Bowl proper at some point—thankfully my friend has a copy, so I don't have to front the money or assemble the minis. 😅

I also somewhat recently saw American Ultra. (2015)
It is truly one of the movies of all time.
The movie is takes itself a bit too seriously to be a stoner comedy, but tries a bit too much to be a stoner comedy to be taken seriously.
Topher Grace makes for a fun villain, though, as an overeager CIA agent seeking to accelerate up the ranks in the dumbest way possible. Walton Goggins also commits to the insane trained killer bit.
It's not great, but also not completely terrible. Truly a movie that can be watched.
The biggest crime this movie commits, really, is having a screenplay by Max Landis.🤢

I somewhat recently watched Labyrinth (1986) for the first time. You know, the one where David Bowie fondles his orbs. 😆
I found it to be a rather enjoyable film, a bizarre blend of The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.
I hope there never comes a day where I become tired of seeing puppets from the Jim Henson Company. Honestly, they're reason enough for me to return to this movie, as I never get tired of seeing the immense effort and craft put into these characters, no matter how minor.
The musical numbers were a bit of a low point for me, though. To be fair, musicals in general are very hit or miss for me, so hard to pin down whether that's an issue of personal taste or the movie.
Anyway, it's a fun, bizarre fantasy film that didn't quite leave me in love with it, but definitely would be interested in returning to again.

The Pittsburgh-area grocery chain Giant Eagle is selling to Kroger.
I guess the writing was on the wall when they sold off their GetGo gas stations, but I still hate to see a local company get consolidated into a larger company.
My biggest fear is that they'll mess with the in-store bakery. Where I live, it's one of the best places to get donuts, cakes, and fresh bread. I kind of expect that to go away in the name of cost cutting.😑

I've purchased a nice chunk of cards for Ms. Bumbleflower, fiddled with the deck on Moxfield, and I think I've finalized what the deck is going to look like.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes

The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game
LEGO The Lord of the Rings
Anyone interested in any of these? Have to be redeemed by tomorrow, and I'd rather see someone get it than just have it expire.

@nprofile…esnw No, I've not! That's a really neat card.
While that doesn't quite fit the "enabling chaos" theme of this deck, it would definitely go great in a "being the chaos" deck. That deck would have to dip into red, of course—how are you going to *be* the chaos without Chaos Warp in the deck? 😆

So I've been tinkering away at my Ms. Bumbleflower Commander deck. I really like where it's heading.
There are no wincons. In fact, I let everyone at the table know that if it's down to two of us, I will scoop.
My only goal: to maximize chaos. :cat_thisisfine:
For the moment, that's mostly through lots of extra card draws and land drops, with a bit of extra mana thrown in. I have ideas of what might get added down the line (see the "considering" section in the linked decklist), but I'd definitely love to hear what the fediverse would suggest for this deck.

I have vague memories of renting this game from the local video rental store some twenty years ago. I definitely remember enjoying it at the time. While I can't speak to whether the game itself holds up, the soundtrack definitely does!

@nprofile…lf54 The Definitive Edition is a major rework of the original game. Basically took the decade of experience on the original release and expansions and fixed a lot of the issues that became more evident over the years. Keywords have been added to make the cards less wordy, phase triggers are color coded and in turn order, better tokens, health spinners, new art, etc. Characters are reworked to be more consistent, with more ways to cards critical to how certain characters work, and the overall pace of the game tends to be snappier as a consequence.
Sentinels of Earth-Prime is a spin-off game that uses characters and settings from the Mutants and Masterminds RPG. It was released shortly before the Definitive Edition, and it shows. While it sticks to using the original tokens, doesn't add keywords or color-coded phases, it does highlight phase triggers, and the characters generally feel more consistent like the definitive edition.
Sentinels of Earth-Prime can be played with the original release of Sentinels of the Multiverse right out of the box. There's a couple adjustments necessary to mix between the Definitive Edition and older content, but it's not too much trouble.

Started getting back into the habit of tracking board game plays in BG Stats.
May is a good example of where things have been lately. My usual group has fallen into mostly playing Slay the Spire and Sentinels of the Multiverse. While I'd like to hit a wider variety of games, picking out things that the others are willing to play can be difficult, unfortunately.

Late #VGMWednesday post!
Always had a soft spot for the classic Doom E1M1 music, At Doom's Gate. Sure, it's a blatant riff on Metallica's Master of Puppets, but it's a great tune in its own right.
In 2016, Andrew Hulshult—the guy behind the soundtracks for Dusk, Amid Evil, Prodeus, and even the Iron Lung film—released IDKFA, where he rearranged and recorded the entire soundtrack with real instruments. Pretty great stuff—enough so that it ships with modern builds of Doom and Doom 2!

NEOTOKYO° is a video game I will likely never play. It's a multiplayer Half-Life 2 total conversion mod with a cyberpunk aesthetic that borrows liberally from Ghost in the Shell. Honestly, it looks pretty neat.
But that's not important. What's important is that the soundtrack is an absolutely fantastic blend of electronica and orchestral bits, and you should definitely listen to it. So, for #VGMWednesday, I put forth "Scrap I/O" from Neotokyo GSDF.

@nprofile…5es2 I was left unimpressed with Fate of the Fellowship after a single play. It just felt like everything that could be made unnecessarily complicated, was. The board is quite busy and can be hard to read, ridiculously tiny meeples, enemy cards with split actions, each player having two characters with uneven action splits, etc. It's easily the most fiddly Pandemic.
I think it boils down to this: Fate of the Fellowship felt like it complicates the Pandemic system enough to be bumping up against something like Horizons of Spirit Island, which is a system that I find infinitely cleaner than Fate of the Fellowship for something around the same "weight."
Of course, your mileage may vary. It's sitting at 102 on BoardGameGeek's rankings, putting it above all of the other non-Legacy games in the series. My opinion very much runs contrary to the majority.

My hot take rankings:
1.) Pandemic: Iberia
2.) Pandemic: Fall of Rome
3.) Pandemic + Expansion(s)
4.) Pandemic: Rising Tide
5.) Base Pandemic
6.) World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (single play)
7.) Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu
8.) Star Wars: The Clone Wars (single play)
9.) The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship (single play)

I had the chance to play World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King this weekend. It blends a couple of aspects of prior Pandemic titles: the dice-based combat of Fall of Rome and the spawn mechanics of Reign of Cthulhu, replacing the cultists with ghouls and shoggoths with abominations. The typical "five cards of a color" mechanic is replaced with quests: roll the dice to advance on a quest track, while players at the quest location can reveal cards matching icons on the quest track to move additional spaces. Players have health that can be reduced from combat or questing. Player cards grant one-time use abilities and icons for quests instead of depicting locations. Players must complete three quests before taking on the Lich King at the citadel, which is a fourth, longer quest track.
In all, I found myself enjoying this one. It's not my favorite Pandemic, but I think it's more engaging than Reign of Cthulhu. Quests provide an interesting alternative to the usual "cure" mechanic, and I like cards not being locations but buffs or abilities.

Taught and played the Root base game yesterday. I was the Woodland Alliance, up against the Marquis de Cat and the Eyrie Dynasty. The birds got off to a solid start, but a nasty ambush card pushed the Eyrie into turmoil. This event was later repeated in the exact same manner, leaving me teaming up with the Eyrie for most of the game to try to wrangle the cats into control. Unfortunately, I wound up one action short of a points victory before the Marquis de Cat achieved a domination victory.
