Google's "AI" Gemini is really awesome. I usually google time-zones to get a conversion to my local time and, before "AI", I always got the right answer plus a nice link to a useful site to check things. Today the "AI" summary was wrong by +1 hour. Gemini just saved me from attending another meeting. Isn't it great?

Many asked me "Are you going to scipy 25?" They are friends who wanted to see me, work together in projects, celebrate conda-forge's 10 years anniversary. My answer is that I'm not ready to risk traveling to the USA. For those who think I'm overreacting, please read this:

for that you need kids, maybe a cat can help, my kid was able to delete all my emails once by hitting the keyboard randomly. Sadly I recovered them all from the trash folder :-/

I usually open all talks I want to watch in browser tabs and wait for it to crash, lose everything, and call it done.

I see tons of #PyConUS posts in my timeline and it pains me a little. Not b/c of FOMO, but b/c it is not safe for people like me to attend a conf in the USA at this moment.
Very few confs are moving to online only and/or outside of the USA. I wish more would do this.
If not, just cancel as a form of protest. Keep going as scheduled is a sign that no one visible is hurt by this, and no one care about the invisible ones.

AI hype: We don't need devs.
AI reality: OSS devs are working double time to sort out trash generated AI.

not sure. Even in a more homogeneous space, like Linux flavors on the same arch, we can't seem to agree on how to package stuff. The patches, the versions that should be available, the extra options, etc... IMO packaging is a community effort and we need many communities sharing knowledge and tech, but free to do their own stuff when necessary.

my whole field is like that. Many packages requiring numpy 2.0 and others lacking, resulting in unsolvable envs or undesired downgrades. A simple example, very common in my field, try to install cf_units, a central piece for climate science, alongside any modern package or python.

Uv is a great choice if pip solves all your problems but you need something faster and more feature complete. Pixi may solve the wheel+PyPI mix. However, there is a lot of confusion on what tool does what and claiming that "all you need is X" doesn't help newcomers. As a heavy conda user I always say: "the best tool is the one you know the most." I can sure make makefilesnand build everything from source look like a good alternative if you let me ;-p
