Mike McCaffrey

Senior Architect building Drupal sites for more years than I care to count, with a strong focus on accessibility and best practices. Trying very hard to convince people that the AI craze is a pyramid scheme that is going to crash the entire economy. Opinions expressed do not represent those held by my employer or coworkers; they are totally into AI as well, which makes meetings very awkward.

I would not describe the cave generation as boring. I've seen some absolutely beautiful scenes.

There has gotta be a better governance structure for #OpenSource projects than to cross our fingers and hope that the dictator stays sane and benevolent.

The initial float went alright (unfortunately), but with each unlock period where investors get to sell more shares the price is going to continue to go down and down as they rush to cash out. Not to mention that when they release their Q2 numbers next month, things will likely not reassure investors.

The problem is that she wants honesty and transparency from a company that would disappear in a puff of smoke if they told the honest truth about their economics (which should make their IPO filing interesting).

This video starts with some #EdZitron number rattling, but then goes into a dramatic tale of lies and betrayal. This lady is furious at #OpenAI now, after having previously trusted them with her business.

I mean, we are in a Google Meet call, so not sure there is anything stopping them from stealing all of our trade secrets for installing open source software for nonprofits.

Considering how critical of how I've been of 95% of what people are doing with #AI, I feel like it is important to call out cases where it is actually helpful, and boy is it nice to be able to ask #gemini to tell you what happened in a meeting if you have #adhd and miss something important someone just said.

Not sure they will find any freedom at this point without quitting.

Well, some coworkers who have spent two years humoring #AIBoosters in the company have now realized that there is no way to placate extremists.

Why do building contractors get to charge clients for their jobsite toilets but web developers do not?

2025-12-23 21:00:51 UTC

Sorry, but there is no way to have a good outcome for the #AIBubble, because the real bubble is rich people having the deluded belief that they are better than everyone, and the rest of society going along with it, and that doesn't seem like it will change until they fail so hard that there is irrefutable proof that having a billion dollars makes your brain atrophy until you are a gibbering moron.

Apparently, the increasingly broad recognition that we are in an #AIBubble has not yet stopped executives from panicking about being "left behind". Based on what I am hearing third-hand, CEOs rationalizing #AI investment has actually reached a new fever pitch.

I found my neighbor's phone by the side of the road and used the emergency contacts to call her husband who told me where they live, so I dropped it off.

Yes, the best use of "AI" is identifying plants.

2025-10-07 22:33:03 UTC

My boss asked me "what new skills do you think web developers will need in two years", which gave me an opportunity to tell her about my recent efforts to learn urban foraging and how to identify edible plants in my neighborhood.

So many websites unnecessarily prompt you "are you sure you want to leave this site?", but of course #GoogleMeet does not do that, since it is the one site I am constantly accidentally closing when I hit Ctrl+W and don't realize that window is selected.

This guy casually saying that it could be a huge business opportunity for some company to replace one of your human friends with a $20 per month #AI is one of the most dystopic things I've ever heard.

Absolutely bizarre to see #EdZitron concisely and dispassionately lay out revenue/expenditure numbers (with citations!) that show how over-extended the #AI industry is, only for the host to turn around and declare that he is a radical.

Just think about all the plastic waste from the gowns and gloves and medications and such, if you have to go and get dental surgery later (not to mention all the time, money, and pain).

Could it be that #OpenAI is not being efficient with the amount of money they are spending and GPUs they are buying?!

No, you need to drive a gas car an awfully long way in order to use as much energy and produce as much carbon as it takes to build an electric car from scratch.
