Daniel AJ Sokolov

Recently I had an elderly visitor. Her mobile phone rang. Unknown caller. She didn't take it. A few minutes later, it rang again.
I coerced her to take it. "Bit it could be criminals!", she said. "So what are they going to do to you over the phone?", I asked. Reluctantly, she took the call.
It was the police, offering her that she can move her illegally parked car right now or pay for a tow.
Picking up that call saved her hundreds of dollars.
I guess you win some, you lose some.

Jedenfalls war das Fire Phone gute Qualität, damals.

In Halifax, they sell live lobsters at the airport to bring along as hand luggage.
So it's not as unreasonable as it sounds.

One difference is that the West Bank is technically not annexed, as no fully recognized country is laying claim to it. Ukraine however, is fully recognized, and even the Russian Federation guaranteed Ukraine's territorial integrity. That's the legal side.
The journalism side is that these are headlines, and likely there were several alternate headlines in an A/B-test. You can't conclude much about the author's point of view from looking only at those headlines which won out.

I don't see how removing subsidies is an attack.
I would like the subsidies to continue, and I would like to see car prices (but also parts & maintenance costs) to come down substantially (and I have ideas for that), but stopping to hand out cash is no "attack".
Removing protectionist measures against Chinese EVs will not bring more European models to Canada.
Renault/Dacia is available in Mexico, why not here? Nissan only owns 15%. Why is Fiat not selling more models here?

2025-09-30 20:14:37 UTC

- reply

Apart from tariffs against Chinese EVs, the article does not mention protectionist policies. I know that it is illegal to import used vehicles (except from the US). What else?
The current government is the first working towards reciprocally recognising vehicle homologations with Europe. I see progress.
But maybe you are right and Carney is secretly trying to kill the EV industry. Then why are Europeans not selling combustion vehicles here? Where are the Dacias, Citroëns, Vauxhalls?

2025-09-30 07:01:35 UTC

Nobody is keeping any of those brands out of the Canadian market. Only the Chinese are kept away for now, but the rest could open shop any day.
Here in the Yukon, all public chargers are by the government. The electricity has been free for years (that is going to change). There are subsidies for private chargers.
The BC gov is investing significantly in chargers, too.
I don't know all the programs nationwide, but I see a lot of money for chargers.

The Dacia and the Toyota would have a chance. I don't know about the Chinese ones, but I would be worried if those other European small ones would fair well in Canadian conditions. Roads are just not as good, snow clearance is not as good, it's more demanding on the vehicles.
The Europeans could offer their cars in Canada if they wanted to. And the Germans do, but look at VW's overall market share in Canada...

Also, the idea that the number of all shares multiplied with their most recent price represents the "company value" is absurd. Rarely could you sell all shares at that price in the open market.
The stock price tells you the value of that last bunch of shares, not of all the shares.
There is value in liquidity. A stock buyback program provides extra liquidity. So that (and the lowered number of shares) is why you may see an uptick of the stock price during buybacks.
2/2

2025-09-07 07:08:14 UTC

- reply

What is missing from that piece is that the stocks which the company buys are deleted. So no, the "company value" does not go up.
Stock buybacks are usually undertaken by companies which print new shares regularly to pay for services. In the long run, that dilutes each stock holder's share. Stock buybacks are a way to undo (some) of that dilution.

I disagree. Gambling is a human thing. It will always be there, legal or not. So I prefer it to exist with oversight. Better than without. For example, Maltese online Casinos have to pay out 85% as winnings. Try to find that in Las Vegas! Or in a gov lottery.
My advice is: Stay away from online gambling. And there should be rules about advertising. But I don't think it should be generally illegal, because then all that's left would be organized crime gambling.
