#dell provided me with a spare part for an 8 year old #inspiron laptop in double time. I spoke to a human on the phone and the part is on the way. Time taken: 10 mins max from first landing on their website. Ace.

My home-hosted website is being hammered thousands of times an hour by a swarm of coordinated residential IP addresses that do not get used again the next next day but hit with a new batch of addresses the next day. The attack swarm does nothing other than a simple GET & that is it. What can be done? I do not see why one should play along with such coordinated nonsense. Blocking all IP addresses in the swarm would serve no purpose: they hardly any of them are re-used. #suricata #ids #firewall

2026-10-23 21:36:36 UTC

They really bust the internet if it means one has to spend a Friday evening on an #ids intrusion detection system upgrading a firewall to stop some miscreant swarm of one off IP addresses from inundating one's web site with pointless GET requests.

If modern society is freeloading on FOSS, why not have a day of the year where the software goes down in a pre-programmed manner for the good of society to practice living in the stone age?

2026-10-21 20:36:03 UTC

My #ids sees crawler IP proxy exit test attack on my web site using 1000 different IP addresses issuing GET command and doing zilch just testing their IP addresses work? What can one do?

No currently available smartphone can provide enough power / energy for a 20 hour day of use in emergency situations. This is a wee bit of a major weakness in our information age. Many folks just do not carry around a battery pack "in case the day turns into an emergency". We seem to tolerate poor device design.

ln #macos #apple #mov .mov files cannot seemingly be exported as #mp4 from #quicktime player. Some conversion options are present but not listed as mp4 and the help page does not list it. Maybe I am wrong or stupid. But so often I think of buying an #iphone for the ease of use but then I hit this repugnant apple walled garden of encapsulated software that runs totally contrary the spirit of FOSS or any decent computing ethos one can think of and makes me recoil. Long live #vlc .

The car parts and repair company #ATU DE has an phone AI audio assistant that makes a typing noise and with office call center noises in the background. This level of insane fake service provision must take a very special sort of management delusion to think it gives a good impression. They probably pay extra for this. It makes the customer look foolish. Utterly unfathomable to implement such a revolting fake. The world of business has truly gone totally potty to try to automate in that way.

Many #reticulum #nomadnet sites are not reachable.
For example can anyone reach

If so, would you be so kind as to share the TCP interface you are using ? Perhaps then I can reach the site using that. Thanks.

#db #diebahn DE online booking cannot generate a price for a ticket from London to southern Germany. It tells you to book each leg independently. This is so bad it makes you scream. Cars do not have this problem and I am sure that this is why people would rather drive.

Does #FIPS (https://github.com/jmcorgan/fips) #mesh provide automatic connectivity for nodes behind symmetric CGNAT, or must one manually configure at least one reachable peer?

Setting up #LUKS2 #encryption is not a user-friendly experience & is a perfect example of how user unfriendly linux can be. Or should I say non idiot-proof? It does not echo the #passphrase. There is no way to make it do so. So how is one supposed to deal with the case that the keyboard is different to what the computer is set as? Then you type in your passphrase twice blindly & then later wonder what happened as what you thought was a - or y was something else and boom lockout. Terrible design.

If I want a #backup of my machine's persisted data to restore it on another new machine (during a machine upgrade), is there no snazzy linux command like "freeze everything" while I copy? I am using an ISO boot state to make the copy of my persisted data to make the dataset to restore on the new machine, but seems a wee bit clunky as a method. #nixos #impermanence #persistence #persist #iso

What is the solution to the problem that when using a 10Gbit ethernet connection on a switch, the other 2.5Gbit connections on the switch stop working. Some sort of bottleneck? Is this due to a cheap switch or bad design, or is it a fundamental limit? In which case, why do they sell such switches?

A lot of apps on #Android do not work suddenly & only work again if you #update them. There is generally no warning of this: you just have to fail in what you are trying (logging in with the correct credentials, attempting it 10 times or trying to make a payment, the list of time consuming failed tasks is endless) and then try to update if that occurs to you. Android and apps have here an ultra massive design fault: what system/app lets you fail so many times when the cause is a missing update?

#reticulum #meshchat 2.3.0 does not restart reticulum #rnsd after it itself restarts so the settings that are changed e.g. #lora frequency and spreading factor do not take effect unless you, additionally to restarting meshchat, also remember to restart rnsd i.e. the reticulum daemon . Ho hum.

2026-10-03 12:36:04 UTC

#reticulum #meshchat 2.4.0 using #rns 1.5.5 cannot decode announces from other meshchat instances using rns 1.3.7
meaning messages can be received by the 1.5.5 system but it cannot reply because the public key contained in the announces from 1.3.7 is not able to be used / read / decoded by 1.5.5

Very interesting article in New Scientist page 5 issue 3613 about the effects of AI and LLM use on #mathsresearch . The tenet of the article is a that AI tooling will alter a lot of the way progress is made and mathematicians might be damned to sift though AI output. What I am not seeing is examples of things in maths today that are not in the models used, i.e. not in their training. Anyone have examples of mathematical things that the current models are not even aware of? #mathematics #llm #ai

A NL-based scanner is sweeping #Reticulum using many IPs across a range to touch public RNS transport node on #port4242 . Is there a playbook-like resource for getting apps newly packaged in the #nixpkgs store & helping maintainers do updates & field issues? Am making so many homebrew #NixOS overlays from #github / #nixpkgs directly using LLM fixes that this removes the need to share fixes upstream & nixpkgs loses the benefit of feedback. #LLM use risks weakening the centralised #repo culture that advances #FOSS because the vitriol against novices using LLMs to raise issues has seeded a vicious circle of avoidance.

£7 = 8.20 € = 9.50 $ charge for dropping off people by car at #HeathrowAirport UK: not parking, stopping, opening doors, family get out. A plague on their rotten exploitative scum business model. I think a deliberate delay in the wifi transmission from one node to the other would have solved it... I also tried 4 yagis at SF12 in same attic)

I have a direct line of sight to directions to:
#Birmingham
#Warwick
#Coventry
#Evesham
#Worcester
So wanted to know if anyone in that zone was on #reticulum by #lora #rnode and what frequency settings (freq, bandwidth, spreading factor, coding rate) they are using. I am using for now:

If #LLM code is to be avoided and bad for lots of reasons, is there a human equivalent resource where armies of crowd sourced humans solve coding tasks for a pittance for total strangers who post a request?

@nprofile…0mlj I know this is supposed to be funny but this is exactly the same sort of hate speech that lead to various historical events in DE that they are not proud of. I find it repugnant to paint a subsection of society (however small) as being for slaughter. I simply cannot fathom how this can be considered for publication.

Removing all files from #googledrive seems not to be easy. It is very finicky and does not send over all files e.g. .exe files. Really nasty project removing all stuff from googledrive : time consuming and annoying. Any tips welcome.

@nprofile…s3zw Nationalism is a fallback mentality that has the largest common denominator and is cheap politics and makes others unable to complain about the flag. The Nazis at least had their own icons. New racists do not. They misappropriate. The UK has this everywhere. The appropriation of a national symbol of égalité and fraternité as a nationalistic symbol is deliberate propaganda and one feels nausea at the devaluation of a symbol normally used only on special occasions. Aux armes citoyens!

@nprofile…hsdl Wow. Nice kit. Not legal in DE for all possible power settings so have not used it and do not know how to set it up. I do however have a flashing explainer here in case it helps by analogy https://loramesh.org#flashing

@nprofile…v575 Yeah.... electricity is an issue.... but for what it does, not too expensive.... electricity is not cheap but the figure of merit
cost/effect
is good.
I can think of lots of things that cost more and have less effect e.g. a Mars bar, pint of beer, haircut...

One nice thing about #radicle & #reticulum is that I can switch off my servers running a reticulum backbone (reticulum.me is off ; but reticulorum.net is still up on Hetzner) or radicle seed (repoducible.org is off in August as it runs on a laptop with a battery and I'd rather not leave it alone) when going in holiday or doing maintenance & not worry that you are breaking some infrastructure. They are self-healing: the same service or task will be available in/via another corner of the mesh.
