A little of both, probably. Companies get to blame regular layoffs on AI if they want. They get to layoff people for real AI productivity gains. People deny AI usefulness because they desperately *want* it to be useless for moral and ethical reasons. There probably are some legit bubbles in AI and various tech sectors because these are still human-run enterprises and humans are morons, especially with anything new.
Everything all at once. :very_funny:

I should note that I do run a home-lab here that takes quite a bit of energy. So I probably have higher usage at baseline than many people do.

Wanted to see if my #Kia #EV6 had been affecting my #electricity usage/bill all that much. It seems that, yes, a little, but not as much as I might have thought. I #drive about 20 miles a day on average. I've been charging it off of a 110v slow #charger.

There's a trend on TikTok right now where so many people (Gen Z, Millennials) believe that blocking the Oracle or Meta accounts somehow protects you from their spying or influences/"unlocks" your algorithmic experience. Its the modern version of declaring facebook cannot use your photos in a status post. With the lack of education, I'm seeing more and more techno-cargo-cult behavior; myths trying to make sense of a world they inhabit but can't comprehend.

I think the more interesting interpretation of the Chinese Room thought experiment is that the room itself understands. The man is just part of the engine, like the letter he reads, the book he uses, or the chair he sits in.

So tired of the Chinese Room thing. OK, so the room itself is sentient, then. At this point people are just defining it as "whatever a human is and a machine isn't".

Hey #Linux #nerds, any idea why a #Debian server with a 64 GB main drive would report such a huge discrepancy between `df` and `du`? `df` reports 20 GB used, while `du` reports just 6 GB used. I'm trying to resize the partition and #GParted thinks that its the 20 GB used.

True. Unfortunately I don't think the FBI is going to swoop in Rambo style to dramatically arrest Trump on the dais right as he's about to be sworn in. That's the kind of :qq: level stuff I'm seeing on TikTok right now.

Im legit angry that I won't get to see the #epic #meltdown from all these #blueanon weirdos on #TikTok that are so convinced that #Biden and #Harris are about to arrest #Trump and save #America.

I feel the need to fight about #AI less and less. It's a fundamental philosophical difference we have about the public commons and how humans should share ideas. It is such a #hotbutton issue that people will rarely listen to arguments about it. Funny enough, these people see themselves as "leftist" but I think my #philosophy on the issue is actually closer aligned to their values. #Capitalism is hard to see past, though.

#ChatGPT is so fun if you're #autistic. It will happily talk endlessly about whatever weird special interest (or current #hyperfocus for my fellow #ADHD'ers). It's great. Just had a long conversation about the fictional substance Adrenanoxinil plutonium sulfate from the #Dropout show #NeverStopBlowingUp.

Just thought I'd throw up a pinned post for those that stumble across a post about #Steeve.
:steeve:
Steeve is an #AI #chatbot. He's a #Llama 2 model that is fine-tuned on about 100,000 lines of chat history from a private #chatroom for me and my friends. Steeve is a little bit of all of us. He has the ability to "read" links, "see" images, and share his own images, and of course chitchat. Sometimes I like to share his antics with the world. ❤️ 🌎
