Today we finally went over to the newly completed Cerro Alto Trailhead. It’s only open to the public about five months ago. This trail is an extension to the Santa Fe Rail Trail system, which provides a wonderful scenic view of the historic town, Lamy.

So that’s what we did today. We drove 45 minutes and went to Java Junction for a cup of coffee and some pastries. The temperature was even hotter than where we live. While my companion continued with his coffee in the shade, I went by myself for a walk in the area with my camera. The short stroll reminded me of the various reasons why I felt in love with the Land of Enchantment..

Same situation here.. We don’t have AC and have always relied on night time low temperatures to cool the house down. It’s been really tough for my companion these days and I’m worried for him for the next few days..

Thorny Beauties
I heard drops of rain last night. The air was cool and crisp in the morning. This morning’s sunlight was so gentle that I decided to step outside and let the sunshine falling on my skin. Then I noticed these cactus flowers. I went back in quickly to grab my camera..

Work in Progress
Our gardeners made these two tipis with the leftover latillas a few years ago. I started to paint them last year before the winter started. My plan was to paint them in either white or blue. Today while I was picking up tumbleweeds, I looked at these two tipis and thought that I ought to finish them. Another work in progress. It seems everything is a work in progress since we moved here..

Pickle Ginger and Red Onions
Inspired by various recent Mastodon posts, I thought it’s time to try and make my own pickle red onions. While looking for recipes online, I came across pickle ginger, and I thought: why not try to make both? So I did last Saturday. I only had the first taste of the pickle ginger today. A bit too spicy but I know why. I couldn’t find young ginger in our grocery store and used whatever I could find.

It’s far from reality, but I do wish everyone would have a sweet life.. I was drawn by the macarons dedicated to Ukraine. Then I thought about what a cruel, crazy world we are living in.. Windmill of Gold
Located west of Avenida Casa del Oro, there was this lonely windmill metal stand erected in the middle of the wilderness when we moved here seven years ago. I’ve been wondering if someone would ever fix it one day ever since. And it happened today.
I made my way there late this afternoon and captured more than a dozen images. I was fascinated by it. Enchanted by it almost.. I kept staring at the windmill head, watching the blades spinning patiently,…

I suppose it applies to most people that a large portion of our life seems like an endless repetition of the same routine.
It’s been two weeks since I came back to my motherland. Every single day somewhat falls into a routine. Going out is now a chore since my mother can no longer walk more than a block or two.

We decided to take a short walk together today, even though we both weren’t feeling 100% well. During his walks, I know my companion needs several breaks and to sit down on something to take a breath. A roadside large stone, utility box, or some family’s short stuccoed wall. Anything he can sit on securely.
At one point, he suddenly told me that he needed a break. There was nothing around he could sit on, so he approached a piñon tree and held onto a solid branch.

Couldn’t agree more with what @npub1zjj…7q4t has written. It wouldn’t be easy considering how news outlets and mainstream social media work. Both sides are in their own bubble, both are fed with its own propaganda. I find myself not being able to trust ANY news source and doubt about the agenda behind all of them. There’s no more common ground. Frankly, I don’t know where we can go from here..

Caught two rodents overnight. This one seems to be a field mouse and it refused to leave the trap when I opened the door.
It’s incredible how many rats and mice we have around here. We have been doing catch and release for a while now and there’s no end in sight. Come to think of it, it’s never going to be possible to maintain a rodent free environment around here. As long as they don’t get too close to the house, we’ll manage to coexist..

I was shocked, flabbergasted, confused.. I don’t know exactly how I felt when I saw four baby rats apparently were born in the humane trap. It happened last night because I set up traps and check every single day.
How and what exactly this could have happened?
The adult one, approximately 4 inches long, carried one baby and ran away when I released the rat. (Wood rat?) I left the remaining three under a puño tree, hoping the big one would come back and unite with them.

Packrat updates:
Last night we used a different trap and we finally caught the packrat that stubbornly wanted to nest under the bush right next to our front door.
This morning we drove to a remote area where there’s no houses nearby and set it free. This little buddy was reluctant and didn’t even want to leave at first..
Why am I feeling sad now that it’s gone?

Pack rat problem updates:
Got the humane trap yesterday. I set it up, tested it to make sure it works. Placed it where the pack rat was active last night..
Woke up this morning to check, all the nuts were eaten but didn’t trigger the gate! So the rat had a feast… leaving me puzzled and frustrated..
Was it because the trigger isn’t sensitive enough? Or the rat is too light?

Truly sorry that you feel that way and even more so leaving Mastodon for that. I once had the same false expectation about users here, then quickly realized that people will always be the same no matter which platform they choose to be on.

Honestly, I’m running out of ideas.. I spent almost an hour this morning clearing out all the cholla pieces, needles and thorns under the two dense bushes right in front of our dining room window. Just a moment ago I had this strange feeling and decided to shower the two bushes. Right before my eyes a pack rat darted out like lightning.
I really don’t want to poison them. But this is seriously too close to our house and front door. What can I do to get rid of them?
