I’ve just put my favourite jumper on. The sun is low and golden in the sky. The cat is curled up asleep near my feet. I’m going to roast some squash for dinner.
Like Humpty Dumpty, I am having a great fall.

Well I had a lovely walk and feel silly for letting my daily walk slide. True, it was probably sensible not to walk up the tree-lined street to town during #stormausten and #stormboelo but there were other days I could’ve gone but didn’t.
The sun was shining and there’s a nice breeze, everywhere smelled of wet fallen leaves. I went via the churchyard where a mature tree had come down in the storms. I had a nice chat with a young man I read as queer in the mini supermarket.
Now to ready myself for therapy.

I went to a short online meditation session. At the end I thanked the group leader in the chat, and said it had set me up nicely for the evening. Someone else in the group who I know a little from other sessions dropped me a 🦭 in response. I didn’t really know what her intention was, but I like seals, so I’ll take it.

Miss Cinnamon gets half a pouch of wet food at lunch, the second half goes in the fridge for the next day. When I took it out just now I decided it’s too cold today to give it to her straight out of the fridge, so I warmed it gently in the microwave. I’m up in the early hours. I just couldn’t sleep and then I got hungry so I had a 4am snack. Of course all the clocks down here still show BST. The cat was asking to go out but that’s a no at this hour, she’s settled for a knead and a purr instead. I’m listening to BBC Radio 3 Unwind, which is currently playing whooshing ambient white noise with solo piano which is supposed to aid sleep. I might see if I can doze on the sofa.

Good morning. After waking up too early, then drifting back off and sleeping very heavily, I got up feeling groggy and confused. The Tesco delivery came and I tried to put a frozen item in the dishwasher. I managed to make a Professional Breakfast Lite™️ (no sausages or toast) with no mishaps though.
Supposed to be heavy rain all day, the cat’s doing her, “When will my husband return from the war?” act, sitting on the kitchen windowsill and staring sadly out at the weather.
All I really have on my agenda is making soup, cleaning the kitchen and hall, popping into town (in the car, because I’m a wuss) to get cash out, cooking prawn and lentil curry, and watching The Diplomat.

"You can only hold your phone up at a concert one time for maximum 30 seconds" https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/781946 Rejected UK parliament petition of the day. A shame, I think concerts would really be enhanced by have scores of patrol officers in the crowd shouting, “Put that phone down!”

We’re sitting in the kitchen laughing at the cat, who’s racing about on the patio in the wind pouncing on autumn leaves. She’s forgotten that she’s a middle aged lady of 8! #cats #CatsOfMastodon #mastocats

We’ve decided not to go out today, we can collect our stuff on Sunday. It’s just too wild and windy! In which case, I am tempted to go back to bed for a bit. I might go out for a walk late afternoon, when the rain is forecast to ease off.

2026-10-23 06:58:12 UTC

Good morning. It’s dark and rainy and I’m super sleepy. Weird dreams including missing my train because I was taking a bath in the ticket hall, and touching a blue cat - not a Russian blue, maybe grey underneath, but its top coat hairs were neon blue, as were its whiskers.
We’ve got to pick up some stuff we ordered from M&S, then I have a phone call with a potential employer, which is scary. She runs the unit I want to work for.
Other than that, not a lot to report.
Have a fabulous Friday!

Morning! The rhyming slang threads live on. Apparently we are now going with Witches for Fedi (Witch’s curse, Fediverse) although I favoured Sexy Nurse.
I’m in training all day today, project management for research. Hoping to get a better grip on the topic.
I’ve been out to post a birthday card and buy bread, it’s a glorious morning. The air smells fresh from last night’s heavy rain and the sky is blue with white puffy clouds. On my way to town I went out of my way to avoid disturbing a row of sparrows having a conversation on a fence.
Better get ready for a day of Zoom!
Have a good one.

I have cleaned the bits of upstairs that needed cleaning but there is a lot to do downstairs another day. I’m not sure how we have slipped from Tom saying he would do all the cleaning while our cleaner’s off sick to… me doing all the cleaning. Raising this hasn’t seemed to get me anywhere.

2026-10-20 16:48:13 UTC

I’ve just been reminded of another more recent piece of rhyming slang, “I haven’t got a Scooby”.
Any non-Brits care to suggest what this means?

2026-10-19 13:43:41 UTC

As lots of people raise in the article, who is going to enforce this? Bus drivers can’t do it. If it’s going to be a local authority responsibility, how can they carry it out? Councils can’t afford to employ people to ride around on buses hoping to catch people causing a nuisance.

Good morning! I was too tired to post after I got in from the craft workshop last night but it was such fun! We made mini scrapbooks like wallets with pockets. Some pics attached. It was great to go with Alice, she very much enjoyed herself and the two hours just flew by.
I’m up for a morning walk with her, then I have to make soup. This afternoon I have a video call with a very old friend who is struggling with her mental health, then flu jab.

Hello! Caernarfon castle was very impressive, you can access lots of parts of it. We learned that according to legend, a Roman Emperor came to Wales in search of a fair maiden, who he married. The castle exhibition rather fancifully place him at the top of the timeline of Princes of Wales (Caernarfon castle being where 20th century Princes of Wales had their investitures).
The castle certainly saw some action during the medieval period and later in the Civil War. Today it is heavily restored and contains a number of interesting modern sculptures reflecting different aspects of its history.
After that we had a nice lunch in a cafe and a stroll around the town centre. The area within the medieval walls is very nice with lots of interesting little shops. Well worth a visit. And the sun shone.

Just typed the phrase “Lil Red Riding Hood” and then realised that my whole life I have never stopped to question
a) what a riding hood actually is, I mean I kind of thought growing up that it was the girl’s surname
b) if it is a special head covering meant for riding, why was the girl wearing it to walk in the woods?

I’ve seen this elsewhere, and it makes me cringe. Callousness and self-interest are not “psychotic” behaviours. They might be psychopathic, maybe. Psychosis is being terrified because you think the secret service is monitoring you. It’s believing there are insects under your skin. It’s hearing voices telling you that you are a terrible person. It’s frightening and isolating *because no one shares your beliefs*. That’s the definition of a delusion.
Lots of people share the belief that we need more data centres. They’re wrong, they’re misguided, they’re uncaring - but it’s not a delusion.
Every time someone misuses the term psychotic like this it generates more misunderstanding and places people like me at risk of greater stigma.

I think it’s time to start doing #3goodthings again. Of course, it would probably be more useful when I’m actually depressed, to remind me that there are always some small glimmers even when it doesn’t feel like it. But hey.
1) I thoroughly enjoyed my exercise today. In fact I’m really enjoying it most days, I seem to have got back into my #fitness groove.
2) I am only at about 2/10 for anxiety this evening. It’s usually at least a 6. Winning!
3) I’m enjoying my online journaling and fitness groups more and more as I get to know the other women better. Such a supportive bunch. I feel really welcome and that I can be myself, even if that’s messy.
Goodnight!

Morning. I feel like I’m awake early but I was actually asleep by 9.15 so I’ve had 8.5 hours’ solid sleep.
Nervous about today, first new hairdresser to contend with, then meeting with people from the university about pausing my PhD. Tom says he thinks they’ll be guided by whatever I suggest in terms of time away but I’m not sure how long to ask for. I was thinking maybe 3 months, but I have no idea if that’s a realistic time frame in which to recover.
I guess I’ll find out today whether it can be revisited at the end of the initial pause. I know that I will probably cry and I hate feeling unprofessional and less than adult in front of my supervisor. Honestly, I am so worried about this meeting.
I think I might get up and go out, rather than lying here fretting.

A PhD student colleague was telling me today about her friend who is in the final year of her doctorate at a different university and has lost both her supervisors to redundancies. She now has two supervisors who are supposed to oversee the completion of her thesis who aren’t even from her subject area, as all the senior academics from the department have been culled. I don’t understand how universities expect to retain a good Research Excellence Framework score if they are shedding all the people who bring in the research grants and supervise the PhD students.

Quite. PE was torture for me as a dyspraxic kid who was a liability in team sports, which was all PE teachers seemed to care about. Actual education about physical activity would’ve helped me learn what forms of exercise are enjoyable for me and how to care for my body. Instead I internalised the idea that exercise was not for me and it took years as an adult to learn that wasn’t true.

I was extremely uncomfortable when my neighbour said to me in front of her non-verbal autistic foster child, “I don’t know if she’ll ever learn to read or write.” She seemed to assume the little girl couldn’t comprehend what she was saying. I thought of the non-verbal people I have chatted with online. I thought about giving her a copy of a book I know of but haven’t read called The Reason I Jump, written by a non-verbal author. It wouldn’t have been welcome, she stopped speaking to me (for other reasons) not long after. I wince when I see the “autistic child on board” sticker with the puzzle piece symbol on their car. I applaud the sentiment in terms of pushing back, but I do not approve of equating it to disability. Disability is not a choice, and a matter of conscience is. Being poor makes you sick. We know this, yet successive governments have failed to adequately address economic deprivation. Then they wonder why the NHS is overwhelmed.

I experience the fact that Comic Relief and Children In Need exist as shameful. It is a basic function of the state to make sure that its members (whether formally citizens or not) are adequately fed and housed. That the public steps in to achieve that is not a cause for celebration.

So, not just resources about abortion services - Meta has decided that providing information to people under 18 about menstrual health is not age appropriate. Because famously puberty does not happen to minors 😬

I’m a Green Party member but I’m urging anyone who doesn’t want to vote Green to vote Plaid. Labour are so unpopular that they haven’t a hope of forming a government, and we absolutely cannot afford to allow Reform in.

Mental health services are already obsessed with getting people back into work, and once someone does return to work they are deemed “recovered” and not deserving of further support. The whole “recovery model” assumes that the measure of successful treatment is whether a mental ill person can be restored to economic productivity

In other news, I have to see a new psychiatrist this afternoon. I’m grateful for the appointment, and I’m glad it’s not the last guy I saw, but I’ve had such a mixed bag of experiences with NHS psychiatrists that I’m really nervous.
My main problem this morning is yesterday’s washing up, a task I find very difficult when depressed. Tom is working so it really has to be me. Maybe I’ll do it in two batches.
What’s your biggest task today?

2025-12-17 14:37:17 UTC

Copious, copious weeping today. Tom says he’ll take me to M&S if I promise not to cry in the store or cafe, so I have taken some diazepam.

2025-12-16 16:18:58 UTC

I did it! I washed my hair, washed my body, cleansed my face and used a different deodorant. Blow drying my hair is a step beyond what I can manage but I’m in all clean clothes including a brand new Christmas jumper dress that I was going to return and can’t really afford, but makes me feel good.
Now I’m out of energy again.

2025-12-16 11:59:39 UTC

I did not, of course, go to the social. Instead I stayed in bed until I had missed my train then cried about what a useless twat I am. Other thoughts: IDK why Tom bothers with me; I just want to get smaller and smaller until I disappear; I would like to chop both my legs off. Even I can see that my brain is absolutely infested with weasels but I lack the strength to see them off

When I was quite young I asked my dad why cats liked being stroked. And he said, “Because it feels nice.” But I think he missed my deeper question, which was about how we had arrived at a situation where cats liked to live in houses and be stroked and we liked having them in our homes and enjoyed petting them. It seems hugely unlikely that this would ever have come to pass. Yet here we are #cats #CatsOfMastodon #mastocats

@nprofile…wncd @nprofile…hzyj “unaudited” certainly doing a lot of heavy lifting but I thought it worth sharing at very least to compare Tory and Green membership. What mechanism is there for verifying claims?

So as you may have read earlier, the flight we would’ve been on set off from London Gatwick as planned, got close to Madeira, then was diverted away - back to London Gatwick.
Tom was curious as to why, so he Googled the flight. The first thing that came up was, of course, the AI summary, which assured Tom that the flight had landed at Funchal on schedule and had never been diverted. Complete and utter fabulation. What’s the point of it, when it can just be so confidently wrong?

Good news, Max has had confirmation of his cattery booking and paid the deposit. Christmas is saved!

Oh. I don’t feel all that well. Bit shivery and headachy and a sore throat. No wonder I can hardly keep my eyes open.

2025-12-02 16:30:02 UTC

Just come back from my hand weaving session at Lovely Cafe. It was really good, I enjoyed it very much and think I may have found a fibre art that I can actually do! I felt more normal being out of the house and engaged in something.

2025-12-02 13:28:03 UTC

Things are getting strange. Miss Cinnamon just managed to enter the house without me letting her in and with the cat flap locked. I cannot begin to think of an explanation for this.

2025-12-01 12:24:53 UTC

I’m going to lie down and rest quietly for an hour before my friend arrives. Miss Cinnamon is asleep on the duvet upstairs in the room that’s supposed to be kept cat hair free for an allergic semi-regular guest and I don’t have the heart to move her.

Wow my brain is taking me on a wild ride today. In the past 12 hours I have gone from basically ok to general depression to terror and uncontrollable crying and now - super upbeat? This is the joy of a #bipolar mixed mood episode. They are the hardest to manage and have sometimes landed me in hospital so it’s quite worrying. Thinking of trying to get a GP appointment tomorrow.

2025-11-30 18:47:37 UTC

I feel very mentally unwell indeed. Some friends just asked what they can do to help, if jokes and memes would help, or if I wanted to chat. Any sort of interaction would help. I’m crying in the bath because my head’s so messed up and it feels like familiar bad territory. So anything to keep me feeling connected would be wonderful

2025-11-30 16:43:06 UTC

I fell asleep on the sofa with Miss Cinnamon on my lap. She’s just her tea and gone out. I’m signed up for some online groups tonight, which is what I normally do in a Sunday evening, but I’m in two minds. I feel very mental and not sure I can people. But worried the mentals may get worse if I’m just home alone here in the quiet.
Maybe I should break the habit of a lifetime and watch some TV? I never watch TV alone
