It's like if a gas main blew up, destroying all the buildings on the block, and the utility company said "omg the gas escaped containment! All by itself!"
And then the media ran breathless stories about this amazing 'new' gas and its capabilities.
And then investors said, "wow that gas is super powerful, I better fund it."

Yeah I don't get that at all. Why don't they just mute or block you? If they don't want to see your posts, that seems way easier and less stressful than arguing.... Anyway, sorry that you're having to deal with all this.

As someone who's spent my career in a nonprofit: funders / philanthropy are often part of the problem. While there are exceptions, most funders do not want to support ongoing work for more than a few years, no matter how effective. They want to be constantly funding "innovation", or "scaling", or whatever the catchy new issue is that year. That leads to a lot of new duplicative programs being created bc funders like new things.
There are definitely people in philanthropy who are aware of this issue & trying to change it, but I think not enough.

In 2 weeks the Superbowl will be held in the City of Santa Clara.
For the past 3 hours, the normal business of the Santa Clara City Council has been held up by person after person coming forward in public comment to tell City Council and its local police force to stand up and take concrete actions to protect people from ICE.
Council is not allowed to act on an item not on the agenda, but they are talking now about holding a special meeting asap to take action.

The sad thing is...for work purposes, I love Microsoft Office Suite. Excel outperforms Sheets for any serious analytical work, and desktop Outlook is far far superior to Gmail. (Teams shall not be mentioned here.) But now they are destroying all that with Microslop.

If "AI" here refers to generative LLMs, they aren't able to do anything that doesn't rely on mass scale theft of human-produced language and information. The question is, will billionaires get free rein to force us all to work for free?

"Another farmworker, Gabriel, who came out to speak, brought a backpack full of yellow envelopes containing all his tax documents over the decades.
“These are my taxes. I have been paying my taxes for 19 years, without rights,” he said, as he pulled out each envelope and threw them on the ground in front of the podium. “I’ve been doing this year, after year, after year. For a promise that I would get my citizenship, this is my testimony that I am not a criminal. We are not criminals.”"

"“Palantir’s slogan is, ‘Software that dominates,’” began Joao Paulo Connolly, an organizer with Bay Resistance Silicon Valley. “Who do they want to dominate? You, me, all of us.”
“This struggle against Palantir brings all of our communities together. You may be an immigrant and Palantir software is being used to surveil and monitor you and to report you to ICE or to Homeland Security,” Connolly continued. “You may be a U.S. citizen and you may think Palantir doesn’t affect me. Yes it does. They are constructing a database with data on all U.S. citizens, on all of us, to surveil us and control us.”"

And how did this political rhetoric spread, Sacramento Bee? Did it, perhaps, have any relationship to the hundreds of media pieces sensationalizing "retail theft" despite all the data pointing in the opposite direction?

I'm not afraid of "AI" (which is just a marker term) doing anything at all. I'm very afraid of how billionaires will use it as yet another way to trick and cudgel the rest of humanity into giving up basic rights.
Kind of like how Uber, Lyft and Doordash used app-based dispatching to destroy fundamental employment protections for millions of workers. The problem is not the apps or the LLMs, it's how they are used by billionaires to coerce, control, and dominate the rest of us.

(1/2) THIS is how you govern with courage.
From Santa Clara County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg:
"Santa Clara County stands with all its residents, regardless of where they were born, their immigration status, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or economic situation.
In the short weeks President Trump has been in office, his administration has unleashed a slew of executive orders and other edicts ceasing or pausing many essential social and health care services. The administration is sowing chaos and striking fear in many of our residents. I will use this space to clarify several points of information:
1. This County, including the Sheriff and District Attorney, continues to abide by our noncooperation policy with ICE in the absence of a legally obtained judicial warrant.
2. Residents who are enrolled in MediCal should continue to seek County health services – they will not be turned away...."

Last year, the private health care company HCA announced it was going to stop providing essential emergency, trauma, and stroke care at the only hospital in San Jose's East Side, a largely working-class, Latinx and Asian community, At the same time, HCA planned to invest millions in its hospital on the wealthy west side of town.
So - the community mobilized, and the County of Santa Clara bought the hospital!
It will now become part of our county's public health system, restore the trauma, stroke, and cardiac services that HCA closed, and be open to all.
